Chapter Twenty-four
"Ye couldn't have waited until we got back?" Daryl hissed in frustration as I entered the cellblock, and I spotted him standing with Rick, who seemed to be just as frustrated. "Until Tyreese came back?" Rick questioned, moving closer. Daryl shifted from leg to the other. "I could've handled it."
I stepped forward, "What's going on?" They turned to me and Daryl let out a sigh. "Carol was the one who killed Karen and David." Rick explained as I stopped in front of them, and I looked between both him and Daryl with wide eyes. "Rick kicked her out. Sent her out there alone t'fend for herself." So that's why Carol was missing.
"Daryl. She killed two of our own. She couldn't come back with me! She has supplies; a car, weapons, food...she's a survivor." Rick explained quickly, trying to calm down the situation as Daryl scoffed.
"It's true. She did it, said it was for us." Rick spoke again as I watched Daryl, wanting to comfort him. "That's how it was in her head. She wasn't sorry."
Daryl's brow scrunched up, eyes watery and filled with sadness. "What 'bout them two girls?" Rick rubbed his forehead before looking back up, "I told her we'd look after them." he said softly, and I believed he'd do just that.
"I haven't told Tyreese yet," he said, and my eyes widened as he continued, "I don't know how he's going to take it." Daryl started walking towards the entrance of the prison, "Let's go find out." Rick nodded, looking at me quickly before following Daryl out.
I was sitting with Beth as she held Judith, the small baby gurgling and grinning at us making us laugh. But our happiness was destroyed after we heard the large explosion outside, the cell's bars shaking violently.
I ran outside as Beth went to find the other kids, heading towards the fence. That's when I saw the large army tank, surrounded by a few trucks, a crowd of people standing around armed.
I looked to my left finding Carl standing beside me, and we exchanged worried glances after noticing the burning watch tower, before turning our attention back to the group.
I turned around at the sound of boots hitting cement to find Rick running towards us with his gun alongside Maggie, followed quickly by Daryl and Tyreese. "Get away from the fence!" Rick called to us, and I turned to look at Daryl as he moved closer to me.
"Is that him?" I asked, referring to the Governor. He nodded letting out panted breaths and we turned back to face the small army.
A guy with an eye patch stepped forward, and I could only assume he was the Governor, having never seen him before now. "Rick!" the man called out. "Get on down here! We need to talk!"
"It's not up to me anymore! There's a council now, they run this place!" he explained, watching the Governor carefully. "Is Hershel on the council?" the man asked. "What about Michonne? Is she on the council as well?"
I looked to Maggie and Beth, who's eyes were wide in terror at the mention of their father, Beth letting out a cry as both Hershel and Michonne are brought out and forced to kneel on the ground. "I don't make decisions anymore!" Rick responded, his voice raised.
"You'll be making them today, Rick" he called back. "Now get down here so we can have that chat!" Rick looked to us and sighed. "We can't take em all on," he whispered to us, "If things go south, we'll head for the bus. Let everyone know." he said the last part to Tyreese, who nodded before heading back to the prison.
Rick made his way out of the fence, slowly making his way down the hill to the Governor. Daryl walked away, and I turned back to watch as Rick stopped at the first fence, only a few feet away from the group. The only thing we could hear at that time was Rick telling him to let our people go.
A few moments later, I felt an object being pressed against my back. I turned to find Daryl holding out a gun for me, and I took it with a small smile. "Thanks."
"Beth," I whispered, and she turned to me, her eyes glossed over with a mix of fear and worry. "It'll be okay." I said, though both of us knew that might not be true. Nevertheless, she nodded before turning her eyes back to her father as Daryl handed her a gun as well.
"We gotta do something," Carl whispered to us frantically. "Your dad's got it." Daryl stated once he finished passing out the guns, and Carl rolled his eyes. "They're talking. We could end the Governor right now." I looked down at him, raisin my brow. "From fifty yards?"
"I'm a good shot," he shrugged, "I could end this." Daryl came up and stood between us, sliding his gun through one of the holes in the fence. "Maybe, or ye could start somethin' else." he mumbled, and I knew he was right. "You gotta trust'm."
Rick was still talking to the man, and the only sounds we heard were gunshots as his men took down a few walkers. It wasn't until the Governor had Michonne's katana to Hershel's neck that we knew for sure things were bad.
"Is this what any of you want?" Rick yelled, they got quiet again as they talked normally, and after a few minutes his voice got louder. "But we can still come back. We're not too far gone."
Everything was silent apart from Beth's whimpers, and Daryl leaned over to whisper in my ear. "If we have to fight, stay close to me." I nodded and everyone watched the Governor as he lowered the sword. But the relief we felt was short lived as Rick cried out, and we watched in horror as the Governor proceeded to chop off Hershel's head. "No!" Maggie cried out as Beth screamed, pressing herself against the fence.
There was gunfire, and as the tank rolled though our fences I knew this would be uglier than anything we've experienced before. I followed Daryl as he led me to cover. "They're getting closer!" I cried out to him as I noticed Rick attack the Governor in the distance.
Daryl pushed me against a wall as gun shots whirled passed me, and if it hadn't been for him I would have died the second the bullets hit me.
A couple walkers appeared out of nowhere, and I pulled my knife out stabbing the first in the head as Daryl bashed the other's head in with the butt of his crossbow. Beth ran over to us, shooting down the walkers that followed her. "We need to get out of here!" I said quickly watching as the bus drives us, feeling a pang in my chest at the thought of them abandoning us.
Daryl nodded with a grunt, taking my arm as he pulled me towards an opening in the fence as Beth followed quickly behind, throwing a grenade into the tank as we ran passed it. We didn't look back, just ran, ran until the sound gunfire could no longer be heard.
