Chapter 54: The Angels Code

Previously

A strange tugging in my soul interrupts the moment. I make a clear face of annoyance and my mother seemed to sense my distress almost immediately.

"What's wrong, (Y/N)?"

"There's a weird tugging in my soul."

"Perhaps that is a sign that you are waking up," Ms. Avery chimes in.

"You think so?"

She nods in return.

I give them all a final hug before I go, "I'll see you another night!"

Just as I let go, I feel the sensation of being pulled upwards up great velocity. It's as if a rope was tied around my waist and someone is yanking on the other end.

I close my eyes and allow the rope to guide me.

Now

I open my eyes...and sit up quickly, gripping parts of my blanket. I tug at the collar of my shirt, realizing just how much I was sweating. I guess I was just nervous...

I loosen my grip on the blankets and wipe my hands on my shirt. Gross.

I look out the window, my groggy eyes taking a moment to adjust my blurry vision. The sky is obscured by gloomy clouds and it seems like it might start raining any second.

I fumble for my phone on my desk, missing the table a few times. Instead of feeling the hard surface of the table, my hand is greeted with the texture of something a bit softer. And the hard screen of my phone!

Leather, is it? What is that?

I grab the thick block of leather off my desk and hold it in front of me, sliding the phone onto my bed. I can't quite see what it is, but my best guess is a book of some kind. I wasn't aware that I owned a book with this kind of material...

I momentarily put the book down on my lap and turn on my phone. I slightly wince from the glow before turning down the brightness. 5:18 am.

Oh. I woke up a lot earlier than I intended.

From my window, a pitter-pattering starts. Rain starts to pour down from the sky as if it were weeping.

Don't worry, sky. Everyone needs to take an occasional day off just to be sad.

I put the book back on my nightstand, deciding to look at it later, and slide off my bed slowly since there doesn't seem to be much of a reason for me to go back to sleep anymore.

Outside, the wind whistles loudly and the sky flashes angrily. Looks like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

I rummage through the closet and feel around for something to wear. My hands land on a long-sleeved, cotton sweatshirt that I can't exactly tell what color it is in the darkness.

I lay it on my bed and reach into my closet again to search for a specific item. Judging from the texture of the fabric, I grab what I can only assume is a collared button-up and pull it out. From the silhouette, I hope I'm correct.

I lay it beside the sweatshirt and search for a comfortable pair of jeans. After fumbling around in there for a while, I pull out a pair of well-fitted jeans, a black faux lizard leather belt with an auto-grip buckle, and some socks.

I take off my t-shirt and slightly shiver from the unexpected cold before slipping my arms through the collared shirt. I button it up and then put the sweatshirt over my head, straightening my shirt from underneath. Then, I take off my pajama pants and slide on the jeans, inserting the belt through the belt loops and then clasping it shut. I fumble with my socks a bit in the dark but eventually get them on my feet.

I leave my pajamas on the bed and enter the bathroom to brush my teeth. The moment I flick on the light switch, I wince from the brightness and squeeze my eyes shut. I put my hands over my eyes and slowly open them and gradually take away my hands. It's too bright.

I brush my teeth and wash my face with a wet cloth. That should wake me up for the day. Then, I grab the hairbrush from the rack and try to untangle my hair. Luckily, some small knots in certain places aren't too much of a hassle.

I switch off the lights and make my way downstairs, remembering to grab my phone from my bedroom nightstand.

Once I get downstairs, I open the fridge to plan what I can eat. An omelet seems like a nice choice.

I grab the cutting board and put some bacon on it. I hesitantly look at the knife block for a second. I just stare at it, half in fear and half the other half with uncertainty. I grab the shortest, dullest knife I could see from the naked eye and dice the bacon into small pieces. All the while, I'm being overly cautious with my movement and hand placement.

I place the knife down gently and turn on the stove. As I wait for the pan to heat up, I grab a bowl and crack two eggs, making sure not get stop any eggshells. I add a small amount of pepper and salt and beat the eggs up a fork until they're blended.

I drop the bacon in the pan and shake it occasionally. I grab a fresh tomato and pick up the knife again. Again, being overly cautious, I dice the tomato into centimeter-sized cubes. I plop in the tomatoes with the bacon and let it sizzle for a bit while I wash the knife and cutting board.

As I put the knife under the faucet, I am careful to not touch the blade with my bare fingers. Wouldn't want to slice my finger open with a...dull...knife. I finish washing and drying both items and turn back to my ingredients.

I slowly pour my egg mixture into the pan and wait for the edges to solidify. When it does, I grab a spatula and flip it, then sprinkle some cheese on one side. I wait for it to cook and flip it again.

I finish and sit down at the table with a fork. As I eat, I scroll through my phone, looking for any job advertisements near me.

There's a part-time job offer at a grocery store! But it seems a bit far...

Or, how about the cafe a few blocks from school. Hmm, it doesn't seem to match my schedule all that well.

How about this one for a daycare center down the street from school? It's hard work, but I'll put that into consideration.

I take the last bite of my omelet and wash my plate. It's almost 6:30 and I've got an hour to spare.

I almost forgot about the mysterious book upstairs!

I rush upstairs, grab the book, and sprint back down quickly, my curiosity of seeing it in the light bursting at the seams.

Knowing that I've got some sort of curious surprise... It fills me with passion!

Ping! A pixelated sound rings through my ears.

...What was that? ...Weird...

That was the first time I've ever heard of that noise. I could only describe it as a pixelated twinkle of a star, but even that doesn't seem right...

I brush it off my shoulder and assume it has something to do with Inverse messing with my head or something. There are more important things right now!

I sit down on the couch and first examine the book.

It is indeed leather, an off-white color. The whole book is bordered in a gold marble texture. On the front and back cover are metal or brass four-pointed stars with curved edges centered in the middle. Each corner of the stars has a line that extends to each side of the book

Attached to the spine of the book is a thick black ribbon. It's pressed between the pages of the book. I pull it out and engraved on the ribbon is "Magic is the Key" in a pretty script.

Written on the spine is "The Angels Code" in the same font as the bookmark.

The last noticeable thing on the book is the brass lock on the side. It...doesn't have a keyhole... Well, I mean, there is a hole. Just not...keyhole-shaped. It's shaped like an angel soul, an upright heart with angel wings on the side.

I'm certain it didn't come with a key anyway.

...How do I open this book??

I put my thumb over the lock and brush my finger on it. I don't think anything is going to happen.

I rotate the book 360, but I seriously don't see anything that could possibly help me.

Maybe I just need a second opinion?

"Magic is the key..." I quietly murmur the bookmark's words, "Do I take that literally?"

I stare at the palm of my hand and create a small energy ball of light, only the size of a die.

"Do I...?" I align my palm with the lock and shoot the laser into the hole.

The lock clicks and swings open.

This is so cool!

I start on the first page.

Protectee's name:
Paperjam Ossa

Remember:
A guardian angel's purpose is to protect and provide service.

I flip the next page, eager to find out more.

The Power of Telekinesis

Telekinesis is an especially useful tool for any situation. Whether it is to pick up a book from a table or using it in combat, it is a valuable asset. Although not easy to learn, there are rewarding results.

It is difficult to start off with moving an object, especially if the magic user is a beginner. Thus, it is recommended that they start off with something simpler, such as bending a metal spoon.

How to Bend a Metal Spoon

I. Clear your head and block out any noise around you.

II. Hold the spoon a foot from your face and close your eyes.

III. Visualize the spoon in your head and seeing it bend.

IV. Concentrate on the energy between you and the spoon. Feel yourself trying to manipulate it to your will.

V. Do not allow yourself to stray from your intent, obtaining control over the spoon.

VI. Open your eyes and see if the spoon is bent. Do not get discouraged if it does not work the first dozen times. Telekinesis takes practice and focus.

VII. If you can successfully bend the spoon, try bending it back to its original position.

The more the magic user practices, the more easily they will be able to gain control over the spoon. They may not need to close their eyes once they've mastered this.

If this has gotten too easy, the magic user can move onto the next challenge: lifting and moving objects off surfaces. It is recommended that the magic user chooses something light-weighted and easy to move physically.

How to Harness The Power of Telekinesis

I. Just as you did with step one of bending a spoon, clear your head and block out all noises.

II. Stretch out your hand, palm facing the object, and close your eyes.

III. Visualize the object in your head and see it illuminate with an aura your soul color.

IV. Concentrate on the energy between you and the object. Feel yourself taking control of the object.

V. Do not allow yourself to stray from your intent.

VI. Open your eyes to see if the object and your hand are glowing with color. If it is not, do not get discouraged that it didn't work. Magic takes practice.

VII. For first-time users, do not break focus due to excitement or amazement. Clear your head again and continue onto the next step once you've calmed down.

VII. Move the object and turn your body and face with the object. Imagine you are commanding the object to move.

VIII. If the object is shaking or the colored aura is flickering, it means you are losing focus. Concentrate on the energy again.

IX. If you can successfully move the object left, right, up, and down, try moving it closer and further from you.

X. Simulate a pulling motion in your head and use that energy to move the object closer to you. Vice versa for moving it farther from you.

XI. If the doesn't work, imagine there is a line of energy in the palm of your hand that is attached to the object. Try absorbing the energy and see if the object has moved closer. Vice versa for moving it farther.

XII. Your ability to perform telekinesis will get better with time and effort spent. Practice makes perfect.

When performing telekinesis for the first time, turn the body, arm, and face towards the desired direction. There is more natural energy in the body than just the arm. Thus, it will ensure that the magic user can pinpoint where they want to move the object with more ease.

With more practice, the magic user will be able to need the energy from only their arm to move the object. Years of practice can allow the user to use only their minds to move an object, albeit it is rare that they will obtain such skill.

I get ready to flip to the next page until I start debating in my head whether I should continue reading or start practice.

Nah. I can read at any time. Time to practice!

I rush to the kitchen and grab one of the metal spoons from the dish rack.

You have served me well, spoon. But now, you must bend the rules of a traditional spoon...until I can bend you back.

I set down the spoon and refer back to the book.

To clear my head, I better wind down and not get too excited as well as drowning out the sound of raindrops hitting my window. Breath in for 4... Hold for 7... Exhale for 8... I can feel my breath slow down already and my head empty of thoughts.

I pick up the spoon and hold it a distance away from my face.

I close my eyes and imagi— Keep focus, (Y/N).

After numerous attempts broken by my nervousness and/or excitement, I get myself to calm down again.

I exhale through my mouth and close my eyes. I create a mental image of what is in front of me: an outstretched arm holding a metal spoon. I imagine it bending forward towards me, creating a 90-degree angle.

Concentrate, (Y/N). Don't break now.

After a bit of time, my vision of the image alters. Around my hand and the spoon is an outline. The outline around my hand and arm is red while the spoon is white. There are many more rings of outlines around them with different colors. The outlines of my hand and arm start as red, orange, yellow, and then the rest of the rainbow. The few close outlines of the spoon show a white, but then fade off the greens, blues, and purples.

My ears start picking up white noise or something akin to television static. The hand holding the spoon starts feeling light and floaty like I'm being surrounded by bubbles and energy waves.

Oh, crap, it stopped! Focus, (Y/N)!

A nagging voice pokes at me, Maybe I'm not cut out for this...

Don't be so down! You're only a first-time magic user! No one ordered you to get it on the first try! You can do this!

I take in another deep breath and repeat the process. Sometimes, I don't get there and start again from the beginning or I see it and get so anxious that it disappears.

But I know what if I keep practicing, there's no way I wouldn't get it!

"One more time..." I murmur to myself, determined to understand the rules of spoon bending.

I hold the spoon away from my face and close my eyes. I picture myself holding the spoon and seeing my bend to my will. I breathe steadily to slow my pounding heart. My hand starts feeling light again and the colors are coming back.

Harness that energy into the spoon and feel it gradually bend...

Then, the outlines around the spoon change from white to red, orange, and yellow. The white noise slowly fades into a sort of buzzing sound until it's at a steady pitch. It's getting higher and gradually louder...

It's not long before the sound is almost overwhelming, but I must persevere!

Do not stray from the intent, (Y/N): to make the spoon malleable in my contr—

I momentarily flinch and drop the spoon. It hits the floor with a silent thunk. My eyes shoot open and the pitch is replaced with a knocking on the door.

I groan and get up to unlock the door.

"Angel Eyes," PJ greets me with an immediate smile, the same smile that always makes me melt into a puddle, "Why the disappointed look?"

"I was practicing telekinesis and got a little bit frustrated," I put my hands behind my back and chuckle bashfully.

"You could always ask one of us to help!" Skate exclaims excitedly. Looks like telekinesis might be her forte.

"It's a skill learned by all monsters at a young age, so anyone could teach it," PJ points out.

"Even BP could teach it. He's not as useless as he looks," Undyne jokingly mutters under her breath.

"Hey!" BP light punches her arm.

"Kidding! Kidding!" She holds her hands up in defense and laughs.

"Guys!" Skate tries to break up the two.

PJ rolls his eyes light-heartedly, "Don't mind those three. Are you ready to go yet?"

"I've practicing magic all morning, I haven't had time to pack up my things. I'll be quick!"

I leave the door open as I zoom upstairs. I grab a jacket and stuff a few supplies from my desk into my bag. Slinging it over one shoulder, I sprint back downstairs to clean up.

"Oh, crap, I bent it!"

PJ, still standing on the porch, turns his head,  "Hm? Pfft—"

I pick up the metal spoon I dropped earlier to see it bent, creating a 45-degree angle.

I squeal in delight. This is a good way to start off the day!

"Oh wait..." my excitement vanishes and I slap my forehead, "I don't know how to bend it back..."

Skate burst out laughing while BP attempts to contain his laughter.

"Well, dang it..."

"I'm sure one of us could help with it after school," PJ suggests.

"I guess so," I put the spoon down on the table and tuck my book under my arm.

"It isn't too rainy out there, is it?"

"Just a little drizzle. You shouldn't need an umbrella."

"Alrighty then," I slip on my sneakers and rummage through my pocket to find my keys. I close the door and lock it with an almost silent click.

"What's that book you got with you?" Skate eyes my instructional book with intrigue.

"It's like a guidebook of some sort."

"Guide to what?" BP chimes in. I can see the curiosity gleaming from his eyes.

"Remember that sleepover we had where I talked about angels and magic?"

"Oh, right, yesterday was your eighteenth birthday," PJ draws his conclusion, "How were Heaven and the palace I forgot the name of?"

"Lucid Palace looked so pretty! Prettier than anything I've ever seen on Earth with the exception of one thing. But you guys know what that is anyway."

"What do you mean 'we know'?" Undyne ponders for a moment.

"So what did it look like?" PJ suppresses a quick laugh.

"It was made of clear crystal that looked kinda blue from the sky. And it was like a mirror. I also met the King and Queen there. They were so nice and reassuring. When I got transformed and returned back home, I just saw this on my nightstand."

"Ooooh, can we see?" Skate exclaims excitedly.

"I don't see why not."

I open the book with my magic and flip to the first page. Immediately, everyone's face changes.

"What's...what's wrong?"

"Um...ahaha," Skate nervously chuckles, "What language is this?"

"Wha—" I hesitate for a moment, "English?"

BP laughs between words, "No, no, that's not what we mean."

"Wait, hold on, let me see," PJ gestures for me to hand him the book. He holds the book a bit closer to his face, inspecting it, "No, I don't think I've seen this type of alphabet before."

"Do you think maybe Alphys would know something about it?" Undyne ponders, "I wouldn't doubt her abilities."

"I mean, we can certainly try, right?"

"Well, what does it actually say?" Skate leans in slightly.

"It's sort of like an introduction page with ten rules of conduct and who my mortal is."

"Well, cut the suspense! Who is it?" Undyne crosses her arms impatiently.

"It's someone you know~"

"Please don't make this a guessing game," PJ rolls his eyes with a smile on his face.

"Oh, I'm making it a guessing game," I close my eyes and face him, grinning cheekily.

I open my eyes only half a second later to a startling scene. My smile quickly falls.

"I'll kiss you silly if you don't tell us~" a hue of magenta spreads across his face and he bites his lips. He glances up for a quick moment before focusing his attention back towards me.

I back up slowly, hugging the book close to my body. I can feel my face shift to one of embarrassment and heat up quickly.

I. Back. Up. Into. A. Wall.

Well played... He's gotten me backed into a corner...literally.

"Your lips are looking awfully delicious~"

"Gross," Undyne comments in the background, making BP cover his mouth.

I glance over at Skate. She has herself turned away from the action and is shaking pretty hard. She just laughing. So much for asking for help.

I focus my eyes back on PJ and panic rushes through my body again. I press my back desperately against the wall as if I were trying to merge with it. My grip on the book tightens as the leather under my fingers reacts to my touch.

"Okay, okay, I'll tell!!" I break, holding my book with one hand and pushing his figure away with the other, "Stupid PJ and your stupid charm," I murmur as I cover my face with my outstretched hand and face down, trying to cool my face.

"You know you love me~" he pecks me on the cheeks and locks me in his arms, his head resting atop of mine.

"Why do you always get to be the charismatic one?" I muffle into my hand.

"It's how I was born, Angel."

"Are you guys done smooching or are we interrupting something?" Undyne cups her hands around her mouth, making her voice slightly louder.

"Okay, okay, I'll spill," I slip out of PJ's grasp, much to his disapproval, and open the book.

"Being a Guardian angel is not a small task," I skim through the lines, "Guardian angels are to protect their mortals at all costs...blah blah...here it is!"

I quickly sneak a peek from over the book. Everyone is looking at me with anticipation.

"Proctectee's Name..." I pause for dramatic effect, "Paperjam Ossa!" I pat PJ on the back on a few times.

"Guess I couldn't have expected anything else," BP shrugs.

"Inseparable even in the hands of fate," Skate says poetically, smiling and crossing her arms.

"Alright, now that you two love birds are done making out, let's get a move on before we're late!" Undyne jogged ahead a bit and turned around to speak. We all speed up a bit to catch up to her.

~A/N~
