Chapter 53: A Real Angel

Previously

I set down the jar and bag, "Come on, guys. G-Group hug."

Frisk, already hugging me, doesn't move at all. On the right, PJ leans in and embraces both of us. Skate, Undyne, and BP, across from me, join us.

Today...Today, I think is a good day.

Now

I collapse on my bed, yawning and rubbing my eyes. All the events of the day knocked the wind out of me.

I pick up my phone, still connected to the charger, and check the time. It's only 9 pm and I'm struggling to keep my eyelids from closing.

I check my text messages and find multiple image attachments sent to the group chat. After this afternoon, I've decided to add Frisk to the chat in hopes that he would meet new monsters. He's not much of a talker like me, but it seems that I've learned to step out of my comfort zone once in a while.

The image attachments were sent half an hour ago by Frisk.

The first image shows the first few moments I stepped into the clearing. PJ has his bony skeletal hands over my eyes and an arm wrapped around me. The corners of the image have bush leaves, indicating that the picture was taken rather close to me, yet I still didn't notice.

The second image shows Skate and I hugging. I crack a smile at the photo. We've come a long way, huh?

The third image shows me happily munching on my cupcake. There seems to be frosting on the corners of my mouth, yet it doesn't seem that I cared too much at that moment. The cupcake was simply too delicious!

The fourth image shows me in front of all my unwrapped gifts including the necklace box, manga, and jar filled with lucky stars. My smile shines brighter than the beaming afternoon sun.

The fifth image shows a group photo taken by PJ. He gives the camera his normal, charismatic smile that makes me fall for him every time. Frisk and I aren't even looking at the camera because I'm too busy hugging him and he's taken by surprise. Undyne is making bunny ears on an unsuspecting PJ and BP is hunched over, laughing too hard to properly look at the camera. The only word that could describe that photo was chaos.

The sixth and final image might have been sent by mistake judging by the camera quality. The corners of the image are black from someone covering the camera and the photo seemed to be aimed in the air. Frisk's face takes up more than half the screen and his hair is scattered with leaves and blowing messily in the breeze. He must've been hiding in the bushes when he accidentally snapped a photo.

Frisky boi:
Oops

Me:
XD
I think Im gonna turn in for the night

Gud nite

Frisky boi:
Night!

Skate:
Sleep good

I yawn once more and set my phone down on my nightstand. I tuck myself in and turn my body away from the window. I curl up into a small ball and slightly shiver. I rub my hands together and blow into them, hoping to at least gain a little warmth.

I blink a few times and let my eyelids close, drifting off into sleep.

"(Y/N)?" My mother murmurs.

I slowly open up my eyes and watch as my mother kneels beside me. I push myself up and observe as my father helps me sit up.

"Mom? Dad? Where am I?"

The space around me is white, much like the afterlife, but the ground seems soft. I curiously pat the ground only for it to feel sort of like a solid cloud, fluffy and a bit bouncy. Looking down, I'm wearing my white and gold angel dress. I reach just above my head and hear a high-pitched note as I touch what I could only assume was my halo.

"Are we in-"

"The Lucid Palace?" Ms. Avery interrupts me.

I take in a sharp inhale and admire the scene in front of me. A large golden gate blocks the way of what seems to be a palace made of reflective crystal. It stands tall and shines a beautiful shade of sky blue. From a distance, I could only see so much.

Ms. Avery helps me up.

"Will you guys come in with me?" I ask, hoping they'll hold my hand during the process.

"Oh, we wish we could, dear! But your father is still banished and none of us are angels!"

"We'll be there every step of the way, Sunshine," my father holds my right hand/wrist in between his as a comforting gesture.

Ms. Avery comes up behind me and puts a hand on my shoulder. She gently squeezes me, "You're ready. Don't worry about a single thing."

I look down at my feet and take in a deep breath. I can do this.

I look back up, determination shining in my metallic gold eyes.

They let go of me, "I won't let you down!"

My mother gives me one last hug before everyone else joins in, "I love you, my dear (Y/N)."

"I love you, too, Mom, Dad, Ms. Avery."

We let go and I make my way towards the golden gates, nervously pacing on the clouds that occasionally giving me a bounce on my stride.

As I approach the gates, there seem to be two knights standing on each side of the entrance. They're both terrifyingly tall with a set of shiny silver armor and white wings that fade into a shade of cobalt blue. They stop me.

"Hold it there, young one. What are your purposes for entering the Kingdom of Eden?"

His buddy on the right speaks up, "There shouldn't be any of the newly deceased entering at this time. State your purpose."

My whole body trembles as they order me to speak, "I-I-I'm a guardian a-angel and I-I turned eighteen today-"

They look at each other skeptically at first. Actually, I don't know if they're skeptical because their helmets are over their faces.

"Alright, young lady, allow me to escort you to the palace," one of the guards kneels down to my level as the other nods in agreement.

He opens the gate wide open for us. I turn around once more to look at my family. Mom and Dad are holding each other closely and Ms. Avery is waving at me.

I smile and wave back before I enter the kingdom and hear the gates close behind me, clanging against itself.

As we walk, I see angels with wings of different shapes and colors conversing on the side of the street. Buildings on the side of the road are either quaint little shops or humble homes. Adults are casually conversing on the street while their children are joyfully squealing as they throw a red ball to each other.

As they play their game of catch, a little boy throws the ball that comes flying towards me. I react quickly and catch it between my hands.

The children come over to me to retrieve their ball. One of the little girls speaks up, "We're so sorry, Miss! We didn't mean to throw the ball at you!"

Looking at her apologetic face, my heart couldn't help but melt, "Don't you worry about a single thing." I hand her the ball back, "Be more careful next time, alright? We don't want anyone getting hurt."

Her frown tunes upside-down as she cheerfully takes the ball from me, "Thank you, Miss! We'll be careful!"

The group returns to their original play area and starts throwing the ball around again.

I smile at their pure glee and I think the guard also let out a small chuckle. We continue on our way.

"What is your name, young one?"

"H-Huh? Oh, it's (Y-Y/N). (Y/N) (L/N)."

"(L/N)...that name rings a bell."

"Y-You mean my father? H-He was exiled from t-the kingdom years a-ago."

"Ahh, yes! How could I have forgotten? He's suffered a truly terrible fate."

"H-He is much happier now, t-though..."

"I bet he is. Evelyn did not treat him well. However, the morality system is, unfortunately, flawed and thus, failed him. I may have to follow the law, but justice and morality are complicated matters."

We both stay quiet for a while, not knowing what to say. As we slowly approach the palace entrance, I go to ask another question, "I-I never got to a-ask...w-what's your name...?"

"I go by Angelo. Angelo Julius," he lets a short pause pass by as we walk by the other guards, "When you see your father again, please, send him my best regards."

"...I-I will."

We step into the castle and to no surprise, everything is made out of crystal. Intricate designs are carved into the walls and the pillars shine a pure white. It seems to be a foyer of some sort.

In front of me are two sets of staircases on either side of the room that intertwine into one and lead to the second floor. Railings with swirl designs are built next to the stairs and a beautiful ivory white carpet is draped over the steps. Just between the two staircases is a large door that must lead to somewhere important.

"Just beyond that door is the throne room. There, you will meet their majesties, King Octavious and Queen Avalon."

"T-Thank you so much, S-Sir Angelo! I'll b-be sure to t-tell my father about you."

"Thank you, (Y/N). I must bid you farewell now."

"O-Of course. Bye!"

He bows chivalrously and turns to leave.

I turn back to the door and hug myself, feeling the goosebumps litter my arms. I take a shaky breath and count. Four in, hold seven, eight out.

I try to put on a brave face and push the doors open. My face of "bravery" was quickly replaced by awe at the scene around me. To say that I was blown away is an understatement.

A carpeted pathway leads up to a few steps of stairs and two gorgeous thrones made of glass. Behind the thrones is a wall with a beautiful stained glass window. It seems to be a picture of the king and queen. Pillars are lined up next to the pathway with flags draped over its side. Right next to the entrance are two statues, two angels facing each other. At top of everything, a magnificent candle chandelier made of gold and glimmering crystals hangs from the ceiling.

The doors creak close behind me and my awe is suddenly overtaken by the nerves in my body as I slowly approach the king and queen, relaxingly sitting on their thrones. I stop just before the steps.

"Please, make your presence known," a female voice commands. The queen stands up from her seat and makes her way towards me. My body freezes.

I could only stand and watch as the queen elegantly steps down. As she nears me, I can more clearly see what she looked like. She is wearing a dress white like snow with an asymmetric hemline starting in the front with a slight train in the back. Her neckline is an off-the-shoulder design with mesh, flowery sleeves and there is a ribbon tied around her waist, positioned to the side. Her wings behind her are glowing as brightly as the halo atop of her head. Her flowy brunette hair, the shade of melted milk chocolate, reaches her waist and a white rose is tucked behind her left ear.

She holds her hand towards me, palm up. I hesitantly place my hand in hers.

She must've felt my shaky hands because her voice softens as she spoke her next line, "What is your name, child?"

"...M-M-My name i-is (Y-Y/N) (L/N)..."

The King, still sitting on his throne, laughs heartedly, "(Y/N), you say? We've been expecting you."

"Is this who today's coronation is held for? The window of time closed a little bit ago, hasn't it?"

"I'm sure we can make an exception this time."

She nods in agreement. The King stands up from his chair and the two lead me to a side room with a long hallway.

I observe the king as we walk, hearing the quiet echo of his boots tapping against the floor. From his back, I can only see a fluffy red robe, reaching his knee, being draped over his shoulders. It hides his wings. If it weren't for the halo floating above his head, I would've mistaken him for a normal human royal.

We come to a full stop in front of a door.

He turns back around to face me. I can finally see what the rest of him looks like.

He's wearing a collared dress shirt with a small ruffle in the front. A vibrant red, the same color as his robe, waist sash is tied around him and his pair of dark pants are tucked into his boots.

"This door in front of us leads to a room where the coronation process will begin."

I look at the door without saying a word.

"Step forward, (Y/N)," Queen Avalon instructs.

"D-Don't you c-c-come in with me...?" I ask, slightly alarmed that no one would guide me in the process.

"No. This is a step you must take yourself."

"B-But-"

"It is alright, (Y/N). Trust us," she places her hands on my shoulders, "When you enter the room, you'll know what to do. I promise."

I take a nervous breath in and turn back to the door.

'This is it.'

I put my hand on one of the doors, them intensely shaking in panic. I push the door through and enter the room. Just as the door is about to close, King Octavious encourages me, "You'll be fine. Don't worry about it."

I observe the room. The room seems to be a dome shape with the bright sky shining through. The floor is made up of tiles made with reflective material. The walls have windows with intricate designs and draped curtains that reach the floor.

In the middle of the room is a pedestal made of snow-white marble. A book rests on it, closed. The book looks old and extremely worn out.

I open the book to the first page. Nothing. Second page. Still nothing? Page by page, I flip through them to see if there's anything written. After a few moments of looking, I discover writing on two pages.

I observe the book pages. On each page is a four-line paragraph. The top of the left page states, "Coronation Process" in great, big letters. I silently read the paragraphs in my head. They don't sound too bad. Am I supposed to read them aloud?

"Ending another period of one's life
To start anew for oneself
And if one seems bitter and filled with strife
Every end is the beginning of something else

Spread your wings and fly high
A Guardian Angel, you shall soon be
Your potential and limit is beyond the sky
Start a new destiny."

The moment I finish the last word, a stream of bluish-white light spirals around the pedestal and wraps itself around me. I squeak in surprise but go along with it. As the light coils around my body, it simultaneously lifts me into the air. Just as the light comes up to my neck, I look down, seeing that I'm at least five feet in the air.

As the light engulfs my entire body, I feel...something...happen to my wings and my dress. There seems to be more weight on me.

When the light finally leaves me, I am slowly descending. The light swirls around for a bit before flipping a few pages and disappearing into the book.

I rush up to see what the page has to offer.

A guardian angel's job is to protect their mortal at all costs.

(Y/N)'s Protectee:
Paperjam Ossa

"Paperjam!?"

I read further onto the page.

Being a guardian angel isn't an easy job, as it requires a watch over the mortal at all times.

When the mortal is hurt physically or mentally, the guardian angel will feel the sensation in their soul.

A guardian angel will have heightened senses that will allow them to see certain things that mortals cannot. Examples include but are not limited to, pointing out what is evil and detecting things through energy waves.

When the guardian angel is asleep, they can escape their physical bodies and roam around, much like a ghost. While in this state, their physical bodies will be protected, so they can watch over their mortal.

If both the guardian angel and their mortal are asleep, the guardian angel can enter their mortal's dreams and go about undetected unless they choose to do so otherwise.

If the guardian angel is somehow unable to be with their mortal at a specific time, they can summon a mirror that allows them to keep watch over their mortal.

Remember:
A guardian angel's purpose is to protect and provide service

I finish reading and clutch my arm. Am I wearing gloves? I hold up my hands and observe my gloves. They're white and made of silk with a ribbon attached to the wrist area. I also didn't realize that the Devil Divas bracelet that used to be on my wrist turned into a pearl bracelet.

This is so overwhelming for one day. I wonder how other guardian angels felt in this situation. I bet Dad was a lot less afraid during this process. If he was brave, I'll try to be brave too.

As I walk back to the door I came from, I feel my balance shift towards my back. Something isn't right with these wings...

I unfold them and the sight causes my eyes to widen in both shock and interest.

They're so much larger than I imagined!

Previously, my wings were only about the length of my shoulders to my waist. Now, they're all the way down to my knees!

I try flapping my wings slowly to see if I can even fly with them. It turns out, I don't have to flap so hard or so fast anymore with these larger wings. I do a test flight and find that I'm flying much faster than normal. My dress sways accordingly to the breeze. It brushes against my legs.

...Has my dress also gotten longer?

My heels clank against the floor as I land. They're much thinner and a little higher than before. Thankfully, I'm not having any trouble walking in them nor do I feel pain.

And I was right. My dress was originally white and gold, had a short hemline, had a v-neck neckline, and bell sleeves.

Now, it was almost the same dress with a few different adjustments. The v-neck neckline turned into an off-the-shoulder neckline and the bell sleeves were no longer. The short hemline stayed the same, but it now had a white train with gold speckles in the back, making it longer.

All of this is really pretty!

I go up to the door and push it open. King Octavious and Queen Avalon are ready to greet me.

"Was everything alright in there?" The king asks me.

"It was j-just fine, thank you."

With no words, Queen Avalon puts a hand on my shoulder and motions her other hand in a circular motion. A full-length mirror fades into view. I observe myself in the mirror.

In addition to all those other changes, my (hair length) hair is all down and a few white flowers are placed on either side of my head. My halo is also shining more brightly than ever.

Queen Avalon lets the mirror fade before asking me, "Are you ready to go back now, (Y/N)?"

Am I ready?

"I-I think I am. B-But before I go, I-I must meet a-a few people outside the kingdom gates."

"Very well. I shall have a guard escort you out."

We walk down the long hallway again, but this time I'm a little less nervous about things. I admire the portraits on the wall. Each and every angel either has on a regal dress or a royal gown. They all look so elegant and sophisticated. I guess I shouldn't have expected anything less from the royal angels.

This other guard is a lot less talkative than Sir Angelo. But of course, it isn't anything against him. He just prefers not to use small talk. Which is probably better for the both of us anyway.

When we arrive at the gate, I thank the guard and he nods in response. I greet the two other guards at the front of the gate with a curtsy. They chuckle good-naturedly and bow in return.

The other guard introduces himself as Elijah Decius, "(Y/N), Angelo here informed me that your surname is (L/N). Is that true?"

"Y-Yes, sir, it is."

"Would it be too much trouble to send my regards to your father also?"

"Not all a-all."

"I'll forever be grateful."

"And I'm sure you must go now," Sir Angelo suggests.

I nod in agreement, "T-Thank you for all you've d-done."

"It is an honor to protect those with pure souls."

"We bid you adieu."

"B-Bye!"

I turn to return to my family, flapping my wings to gain a bit of flight. From my distance, they're just three silhouettes next to each other. Two of them are sitting and the other is standing.

"Mom, Dad, Ms. Avery!" I shout gleefully as I approach them.

"Oh, Sunshine!" My father was the first to speak, "I always knew you were going to grow up to be a mature, young lady!"

"(Y/N) dear, you look gorgeous!" My mother beams with excitement.

"Do a little curtsy!" Ms. Avery encourages.

I put my right foot behind me and bend my knees, doing a curtsy.

"And Dad, you know the two guards in front of the gates?" I glance back at them from my distance.

"Yes, what about them?"

"Their names are Angelo Julius and Elijah Decius. They wanted to say hi."

"It's been such a long time since I've seen their faces..." He smiles, a hint of nostalgia tracing his face.

Just as he does, a long, dark shadow casts in front of me. I turn around to see the sun, now rising over the horizon. There is no sunrise, but more as if the sun finally reveals itself. The Lucid Palace glimmers as the sun casts its beams on the towers.

A strange tugging in my soul interrupts the moment. I make a clear face of annoyance and my mother seemed to sense my distress almost immediately.

"What's wrong, (Y/N)?"

"There's a weird tugging in my soul."

"Perhaps that is a sign that you are waking up," Ms. Avery chimes in.

"You think so?"

She nods in return.

I give them all a final hug before I go, "I'll see you another night!"

Just as I let go, I feel the sensation of being pulled upwards up great velocity. It's as if a rope was tied around my waist and someone is yanking on the other end.

I close my eyes and allow the rope to guide me.
