Chapter 10: Dough
Previously
I stop singing and the whole room is silent. My palms start sweating again.
'Was I that bad...?'
I look at Mr. Mettaton and the crowd and they just seem frozen.
Then he claps.
"Well done, darling!"
A monster in the audience starts clapping. Then another and another. Soon, everyone is clapping and cheering.
"ENCORE!"
"WOOOOO!"
"AMAZING!"
I smile nervously and walk down the stage back to my seat.
'But I never signed up for your drama club...'
Now
'Cooking, cooking, cooking...' I think to myself as I walk around the building, trying to find my cooking class.
I stop in front of a classroom decorated with a rainbow on 2 clouds and rainbow paper sprinkles taped all over the door. The top of the door is labeled, "Mr. Cloud's cooking class".
'Aha! Found it!'
I walk into the room, find an empty counter, and place my bag down.
I observe the room and first see the walls, a sky blue color with clouds and rainbows on them.
"Mommy! Daddy! I want to paint my room!"
"Well first, we need to know what you want, sweetie."
"What's your room going to look like, (Y/N)?"
"Very blue! With clouds! And rainbows! And, and..."
"And..."
I didn't realize that tears start welling up in my eyes until my vision starts getting blurry. I sniffle quietly and cover my face.
'Get it together, (Y/N)! You can't keep falling apart like this!'
I wipe my tears away with my sweater sleeve and take deep breathes.
'In for 3...hold for 7...out for 8..."
I do this a few times and just as I finish, the bell rings. The other students file in and Skate comes over to my counter.
"Hey!" She gives a small wave.
"H-Hey." I wave back.
"Good afternoon, students, " the teacher says softly, "My name is Mr. Cloud and I will be your cooking teacher this year."
Mr. Cloud is a skeleton who wears a white chef coat and hat with black pants and black shoes. What intrigues me are the clouds floating around him. They look just as soft as a cotton ball and I bet they feel like it too. His eyes are green but his left one has a cloud in it.
"Many of you have already paired up with someone but for those who haven't, go around and pick a partner."
Some monsters start shuffling around trying to find a partner.
"Partners?" Skate asks me.
I nod, agreeing.
Once everyone got into pairs, Mr. Cloud says, "With your partners, I want you to make a bakery item that contains dough. And what I mean by that are cookies, bread, and pies. You will have 30 minutes to make the dough and the other 10 minutes to clean up. Now, put on your aprons, wash your hands, and you may begin."
30 minutes left
Skate and I start panicking the moment he told us to start. I suddenly forgot how to bake and start sweating.
'Get a hold of yourself! 3, 7, 8 remember!?'
I close my eyes and control my breathing.
'3 in, 7 hold, 8 out, repeat.'
I put on my apron and flip through a recipe book on the table.
"What are you making, mom?"
"Sugar cookies, dear. Do you want to help?"
"Okay!"
I flip to a page with sugar cookies.
"H-How's sugar c-cookies?"
Skate calms down and looks at me.
"Sounds okay."
She puts on her apron and washes her hands.
I put the book on the stand and wash my hands. I try to recall the recipe and take out all the ingredients from the fridge and the cabinets.
'A bowl, a hand mixer, a sifter, 3 sticks of butter, sugar, 3 eggs, vanilla extract, almond extract, salt, flour, and measuring cups.'
I put a plate of butter in the microwave for 10 seconds and start measuring one and a half cups of sugar.
"Can y-you plug in t-the hand m-mixer, Skate?"
She takes the hand mixer and plugs it in as the microwave beeps.
I take out the butter and slide it into the giant bowl. I also pour in the sugar.
"Can you m-mix these?"
I pass her the bowl and she mixes them.
25 minutes left
Skate finishes mixing. I look into the bowl to see the mixture fluffy and all the sugar dissolved. I add in a teaspoon of vanilla extract and half a teaspoon of almond extract. She starts mixing.
20 minutes left
"How's this?"
"L-Looks fine."
I put in a teaspoon of salt and grab the sifter to put on top of the bowl.
"W-Where did the f-flour go?"
"I got it. How much?"
"3 c-cups I t-think."
She takes a measuring cup, measures a cup, and dumps it on the sifter. A cloud of flour goes into the air and some into my hair.
"Oops! Heheheheh!"
"Heheheheh!"
I shake my head and attempt to get the flour out.
I sift the flour and Skate continues to pour (gently) flour into the sifter.
I continue while Skate looks at the recipe book and measures half a teaspoon of baking powder.
10 minutes left
"Are we done?"
"I-I think so..."
"What about those eggs?"
"What e-eggs?"
Skate points to 3 eggs on the table.
"Did you forget?"
"Crap..."
I find 2 small bowls and separate 2 yolks and 2 egg whites.
"D-Do you think t-this will screw u-up the whole recipe?"
"Can't be too sure. We just gotta hope for the best."
I pour in the egg yolks and crack another full egg into the mixture.
5 minutes left
"Where's the plastic wrap!?"
'We're running out of time!!'
I frantically search the cabinets for some plastic wrap until I find it in the back of one of the cabinets.
"C-Catch!"
I toss the roll of plastic wrap to Skate. She catches it, unrolls some of it, and sticks it onto the table. She puts the plastic wrap back and zooms to the teacher as I jump up and pour a bit of flour onto the dough and plastic wrap. I plop down the dough on the plastic wrap and wrap it tightly.
Skate comes back with a Sharpie and we sign our names on the plastic wrap.
"Finish up, everyone, " Mr. Cloud announces.
"Just in time, " Skate lets out a relieved sigh.
"Y-Yeah..." I say as I wipe the sweat off my forehead.
"I will be coming around now to collect your dough. Take the last 10 minutes to clean up."
Skate and I go over to the sink and wash our hands before washing the mixer and bowls.
While we do that, she begins some small talk.
"Soooooo...did anything interesting happen today?"
I try to think back to the events of today.
'Schedule, PJ chasing me...twice, the fight during gym, breaking down during art and history, and drama class...'
"A l-lot has happened today..."
I begin explaining my crazy first day in the new school. Skate doesn't say anything the whole time. But I know she is listening to me because she kept nodding her head and looking at me.
We are just finishing up the final bowls when the bell rings.
"H-Hey, thanks for l-listening to me r-ramble for 10 minutes, " I chuckle nervously.
"Heh, it's okay! I like listening better than talking anyway!"
"W-Well, see ya, " I wave goodbye to her.
"Byeee!" She waves back.
~A/N~
When you actually made sugar cookies with friends and these were the errors we made.
So yeah, this whole chapter was based on true events except where (Y/N) was in a rush. And yes, even when we forgot to add the eggs until the end lol

Wow...oh wow...
