The Joys Of Progress
"Evie you have to sleep," Evie heard making her jump as she had been drifting in and out of consciousness. Ever since her babies had been born and immediately rushed to the NICU she just couldn't sleep. She was too afraid that if she did something would happen and she would get a call.
She also couldn't stop doing research and worrying about everything. She was only 16 and already in so much debt and stress. She had no clue how she was going to pay for all the medical bills, the food, and the baby supplies.
And her school work was tanking too. She just couldn't seem to find the motivation to do any work right now and everything was still hurting from her c section.
"Evie, did you hear me?" Uma called out as she waved her hand in front of her friend's face then grabbed a thing of water as Evie was really starting to worry her. She knew Evie was struggling. She was struggling herself and she wasn't even the mom of the triplets, she was just their aunt.
It hurt seeing the three babies so tiny and vulnerable. She couldn't even imagine what Evie was feeling being their mommy but she also knew that Evie was barely even sleeping, barely eating, and barely focusing on anything. Which wasn't healthy and it scared her.
Uma just sighed as she looked at her friend who was zoning out again. She didn't want to do this but Evie was giving her no choice as Uma just grabbed a bucket of water and dumped it on Evie.
Evie just jumped as she had been deep in her thoughts again making Uma laugh as she just couldn't help it. "Why did you do that!" Evie cried out as she began to shake from the freezing cold water.
"Sorry princess, you just scared me. I tried to get your attention for like 20 minutes and you didn't even budge," Uma told Evie who just groaned as she got up and changed.
"Sorry I've just been kinda stressed lately," Evie told Uma who nodded in understanding. "You want to ditch school?" Uma asked Evie who just looked at her in shock.
"You mean like just not go to school at all! That's horrible!" Evie cried out, making Uma roll her eyes as she looked at her friend.
"I mean to see the babies!" Uma told Evie as she could see how horrified Evie looked at the possibility of skipping school. Evie had been given a few weeks off to recover but she had never once actually ditched school before.
"Can't we get in trouble for that?" Evie asked her friend, making Uma laugh before realizing Evie was serious.
"Oh you're not kidding. Evie we're villain kids! We literally came from the Isle which was basically a prison. And you're scared of ditching to go see your sick babies in the NICU. That are there because of these people!" Uma practically screamed out as she couldn't believe Evie was really afraid of some stupid Auradon people when she was The Evil Queen's daughter and literally was abused and neglected for pretty much her whole life.
They grew up with barely anything and had to fight to survive yet Evie was afraid of some prissy Auradon brats. "Yeah you're right! What was I thinking! I'm a VK! Who cares what they say I'm going to see my babies!" Evie exclaimed, making Uma smile as she could see she got through to her.
"Yeah you are! Let's go!" Uma told Evie who nodded as they both left the dorm and headed to the car. "Okay no I can't do this. We should just go back," Evie nervously told Uma once they arrived at the hospital as just looking at the building was making her anxious.
"Evie we can't turn back now. The school won't care if you miss one day," Uma told Evie as she thought Evie was still talking about ditching school, but the truth was Evie was scared to go in and see them.
She hated seeing her babies so vulnerable and hooked up to all those wires. It made her so worried and she just had a hard time being in the NICU room with them even though her babies are her whole world and she can't wait to be reunited with them.
"It's not that. I just I..." Evie began as she started sobbing causing Uma to awkwardly pull her into a hug because she cared about her friend but crying and feelings still made her uncomfortable most of the time.
"Aw it's okay princess just let it out," Uma told the slightly younger girl who just slowly nodded as she kept crying.
"It's so scary. I hate this. I want my babies to just be happy and healthy. I want them home with me and not having to watch them struggle to survive. I hate being so afraid to just pick up my babies because I'm afraid that I'm going to hurt them or even kill them because of how tiny and fragile they are. I hate having to have every single thing monitored with them! I hate the sinking feeling I get every time I have to leave them! I want to relax but I can't because what if something happens. I'm constantly filled with anxiety and worry! And I just want to feel happy again!" Evie cried out as she just held onto Uma and let all her feelings out that she had been bottling up.
"Hey it's okay princess. I know it hurts and I know it's hard. I hate seeing my nieces like that too and I can't want till they're all home and we're all reunited because they will be. But Evie there has been some happy moments. Like what about their transformations. They looked like weird aliens before and now that they're gaining weight they look like tiny babies. I mean what a transition," Uma told Evie, trying to make her feel better about this situation.
Evie just smiled as she nodded. "Yeah you're right about that. It's still hard to see them like this though. What if I lose them. Uma I don't want to lose my babies," Evie cried out again.
"Evie, look at me. You are the strongest person I know. You went through hell with your mom. You were abused and assaulted by people you trusted. You survived a triplet pregnancy and birth all just by the age of 16. You're a fighter Evie and those babies in those incubators right now are just like you. They're gonna be fighters just like their amazing and badass mom," Uma told her sorta sister as she wanted Evie to understand how amazing she was and that her babies would be okay because they came from her.
"You really think all those things?" Evie asked Uma who just smiled as she pulled Evie closer. "Of course I do princess. They're all true. Now you ready to go see your little miracle fighters," Uma asked Evie who just smiled again as she was starting to feel better about this situation.
"Yeah I'm ready. Thanks Uma I really needed that," Evie told her friend who smiled and nodded. "Of course now let's go see those tiny miracles," Uma told Evie as they parked the car and the two of them got out and went inside.
"Oh look who's here early today. Are you two skipping?" the nurse playfully told Evie who just laughed as she pointed to Uma. "It was her idea," Evie told the nurse who just smiled a little.
"Oh I see well anyway come on the babies missed their mommy," the nurse told Evie as she led the two of them to the NICU and opened the door.
"Aw hi Liv, Maddie, and Mal. Look, your mommy has come to see you early today," the nurse told the three tiny babies in the incubators as Evie had decided on the names Olivia, Maddison, and Mallory but Liv, Maddie, and Mal for short.
Evie looked at the three babies in shock as she noticed that Liv and Maddie didn't have the breathing tubes anymore and all three had their feeding tube moved to their noses.
"Oh my gosh! They're not on the breathing tubes anymore," Evie told the others excitedly, making the nurse laugh a little as she loved seeing families get excited when their babies made progress.
"That's right those two are finally breathing on their own. Mal still has a little trouble but she's getting there. We're hoping she should be off of it by the end of the week," the nurse told Evie, making her smile again as she looked at the three babies.
"That's amazing! And they're feeding tubes are in their noses now! Omg does this mean they're starting to take bottles now?" Evie asked excitedly as she couldn't contain herself. She loved seeing the progress and the sooner they started to take bottles and eat on their own the sooner she could start to take them home.
"We haven't tried it yet because we were waiting for you but we do believe they're ready to start taking bottles now. If you want to try and feed them you can," the nurse told Evie who smiled as she looked at the babies.
"Yes please I've been waiting for this moment," Evie told the nurse who laughed a little as she nodded and carefully grabbed one of the babies, gently handing her to Evie.
"Aw hi sweetie. Let's see if you can take a baba now," Evie told her daughter as she placed the bottle in Maddie's mouth and her face lit up when the tiny baby actually began to swallow the milk and managed to not have any trouble with it.
"Oh my gosh you did it. Good job Maddie, you're such a superstar. I have a feeling you're going to be a champion someday," Evie told the baby as she held her a little longer before carefully handing her back and gently taking Liv to feed her as well.
"Hi cutie you ready to see if you're ready for the baba," Evie told the tiny baby as she carefully placed the bottle in Livs mouth and smiled again when she too managed to take the bottle without any issues.
"Way to go Liv. You're just like your big sister. You're both taking babas now, how amazing is that," Evie excitedly told her other baby as she held her a little longer as well before allowing her to go back to her incubator so she could try to feed Mal.
"Okay Mal, please help mommy out here. Please take the bottle," Evie told her tiniest baby as she knew Mal was the only one making the least amount of progress and always seemed to be behind her sisters.
Evie took a deep breath as she grabbed the tiny NICU bottle and carefully placed it in the tiniest baby's mouth as she just watched her carefully just hoping and praying that she would take it down with no issues.
