Having Patience Can Be Hard
"Please take it. Please take it. Please take it," Evie whispered to herself as she held her tiniest baby in her arms as gently and carefully as she could to not hurt her. Mal had unfortunately failed the first test from earlier as she had refused the bottle, but Evie was determined to not give up on her.
The other two babies were fast asleep in their incubators, but Evie was just holding Mal and trying her best to get her to just take even just a tiny drop of the bottle. It was starting to get late and Evie knew she would have to go back to the dorm soon, but she just couldn't do it until she knew her tiniest baby would be okay.
Evie was starting to feel confident that Liv and Maddie were going to be just fine and were going to get through this. They were gaining weight, improving fast, and reaching all their milestones. Mal however was a whole different story and Evie would never admit it, but she was terrified of losing her.
Mal was gaining weight but barely, she was barely improving, she was way behind her sisters and Evie couldn't even get her to take even just a tiny drop from a bottle. "Mal, please take this. I can't lose you! Please Mal! Please just take the bottle!" Evie cried out as she tried the bottle again but like last time Mal refused it.
Evie just sighed as she put the bottle down and just broke down. "You okay?" Evie heard making her look up in shock when she saw an older girl who looked almost identical to her but with brunette hair and she was dressed in hospital scrubs.
Evie quickly snapped out of her shock as she looked at the girl. "Oh um yeah I'm fine sorry if I was disturbing you," Evie told the girl who just smiled a little as she carefully took Mal from Evie and placed her back in the incubator as she could tell Evie wasn't in the right mindset to be holding her right now.
"You're not okay I can tell and don't worry you didn't disturb me I was actually just coming in for my shift," Sara told Evie in her gentle voice making Evie look up as she broke down again.
"It's okay, let it out," Sara told the younger girl as she pulled her close. She had just started working in the NICU recently but she had seen enough so far to know that this younger girl was struggling right now.
"I just don't get what I'm doing wrong! And why can't I get her to take a bottle!" Evie cried out and Sara just nodded as she released the hug and looked at Evie.
"I know this is hard but you have to remember that not every baby develops the same. It's probably not anything you're doing. You have to remember that she's a preemie and her development is behind. If I had to guess based on the way she looks I would say it's probably not that she doesn't want the bottle but more of the fact that she just physically can't yet. I know it's frustrating but sometimes that's just how it is. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Oh and one thing I should probably mention. Don't try to force feed. That tends to make them have a negative connotation and it may actually lead to her refusing anything by mouth," Sara told Evie as she was trying her best to help.
Evie just started crying more as she looked at the bottle. "Ugh why can't I get anything right!" Evie screamed out in frustration as she was trying her best to be a good mom but she just kept making bad decisions and harming them more.
"It's okay you didn't know and it's an honest mistake. You just want what's best for your baby. At least you know now and trust me you're not the only one that's made that mistake before. Everyone, even the most experienced person, makes mistakes. It's part of life," Sara told Evie in her calm voice as she could see that the younger girl was doubting herself and she didn't think that was right.
It was obvious that Evie was a good mother and she was trying her best. Not to mention how young she was and the fact that she was doing this on her own. It was honestly something Sara admired about the younger girl.
Sara hadn't actually seen Evie that much as she usually came in when Evie was leaving, but the few times she had seen her she couldn't help but feel a connection and she felt like she needed to help her.
Sara couldn't figure out why that was, maybe it had something to do with the fact that she looked sorta like a younger version of herself or maybe just the fact that she was a young single mom with 3 premature babies and clearly struggling. Either way something was pulling her in and making her feel this way and Sara was determined to help her.
Evie just nodded as she looked at Sara. She couldn't explain it but just having her around right now was honestly helping her feel a lot better. She had basically just met her and she already felt safe like she could trust her with anything.
Evie was honestly shocked with herself as she usually didn't trust nor did she feel safe with people this easily especially not a stranger that she just met. Yet for some reason she did and if she was being honest she was glad she did right now.
"Thank you um I should probably go now. It's getting late and they're all 3 sleeping now. Plus I have school tomorrow and I should probably try to catch up on some of the work that I missed today," Evie told the young nurse as she grabbed her stuff. She was honestly exhausted and it was clear that Mal wasn't ready for the bottle yet.
As much as Evie really just wanted to stay and keep trying to get Mal to take the bottle she knew Sara was right and she shouldn't try to force it. "You sure you know you can always stay overnight if you want to," Sara told Evie who just nodded again.
"Yeah I know I just think I should probably get back to my dorm. There's less distractions and oh wait what's today?"Evie began as she realized something. "Thursday," Sara began but didn't get to finish as Evie immediately began to panic as she looked at the time.
"Sh*t! Sh*t! Sh*t! I'm so screwed!" Evie cried out as she immediately grabbed her stuff and left in a rush leaving Sara just confused and worried as she had no clue what made the younger girl react like that, but it was obvious whatever it was it was something important.
