Chapter 4: Fire!

Some things in this chapter were ideas from Pony Pals: Detective Pony by Jeanne Betancourt, during the part where the vet clinic is on fire.

At night Jane heard a beep sound. She opened her eyes. Then she heard Parriet neigh. It didn't sound like a neigh. It sounded more like a scream. Parriet was in trouble! Jane pinched herself. She screamed. (Well, that escalated quickly.) This wasn't a dream!

As Jane climbed out of her window, the shortest path to the barn, she thought, "What could have happened to Parriet?" Then it came to her. There was a fire in the barn! No, in the house! The beep was a fire alarm. She HAD to get Parriet out of the barn! The fire could spread to it! "But where could I put her?" Jane thought. The paddock! Of course she could put her in the paddock! It was farther away from the house than the barn. Parriet would be safe there. (She isn't even worrying about her parents...)

When Jane got to the part of the house where there was nothing to climb on, she closed her eyes and dropped. Luckily, Jane landed on a soft pile of hay. She went to the barn. Parriet's ears were laid back and Jane could see the whites of her eyes. "It's okay," Jane said as she put Parriet's halter on. Jane's voice seemed to make Parriet calm down a little.

She led (Now it's the right word) Parriet outside. A fire truck was in front of their house. "Turn off your siren! It scares my horse!" Jane shouted to the fire chief. She saw a white poodle come out of the house, followed by her mom and dad. The poodle was Ellie, Alice's dog. "What is Ellie doing here?" Jane asked her dad. Before dad could answer, a voice behind them said, "I was walking her. When I saw your house was on fire I knew she'd wake up your mom and dad, so I let her off her leash." (Hold up, wait. So Alice was walking her dog in the middle of the night and lived close enough to her friend's house to walk past it and see that it was on fire, despite acting like she hadn't seen Jane in a while a chapter ago. And she sends her dog into a burning house instead of noticing Jane and shouting at her to wake her parents?) Jane knew the voice was Alice's. Alice was very good at startling people!

Everyone turned their attention to the house when one of the firemen called out, "All clear!" As Jane was going inside she saw a figure dressed in black running away from their house. "Who's that?" she thought. Jane hoped she'd figure it out soon. (And here is where my love of mysteries since I was a child is shown.)
