Sona was born blind, with a twin. Her parents didn't know that she was blind at first; they assumed that she just didn't want to open her eyes. But when she finally did open her eyes, they were a gorgeous pale blue; but she couldn't see. After trying everything they could, and taking care of her until she was two, the parents finally realized that she was blind. Their parents didn't want a blind child, so they abandoned Sona and Mara at a very young age.

They at least were able to give them up to a good orphanage, even though the twins still heavily depended on them. At the orphanage, the workers took care of Sona and Mara for the remaining time they spent there. They were given uniforms, and Sona was taught how to read braille and how to use a walking stick. Mara was able to help read her things that didn't have braille, and aided Sona in walking.

After a year of staying there, they had found a few friends. Sona barely remembers her parents at all, other than the locket and toys they had given her. Unfortunately, they haven't been adopted yet.
