Life story:
Mai wasn't born in the village hidden in the leaves. One early morning she was found at the village gates by the security detail and the recently retired Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. She was swaddled inside a flower basket with a protective jutsu seal hanging over her head. There was no note of explanation from any parent, no indication of what clan she belonged to. All that accompanied her was a dented village headband that was too scratched beyond repair to identify. By order of the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, the baby was placed in the care of a young, newlywed couple who had both been a part of the personal Anbu Black Ops of Hiruzen, but had been reassigned due to their engagement.

They both decided to name their new child Mai. Not out of laziness, but rather the name stuck after they couldn't think of anything else to call her.

Two years later, after a resurgence of the investigation, it was discovered that Mai was in fact related to the main branch of a military clan in Kirigakure, the hidden mist village, known as the Chūjit-shi clan. However, due to opposition from the new head of the clan, as well as the guiding words of the reinstated Third Hokage, Mai was made to stay in the hidden leaf and let the branch family alone in this matter.

And thus, she grew up as a leaf shinobi, and being proud of that fact, no matter in knowing her blood ties to the mist.

About her-

Personality:
Mai was raised to be a rather quiet and observant child, always taking in what she saw, heard, and smelled at any given moment; the first ninja lesson that her foster parents had taught and stressed to her on a daily basis. This kind of lifestyle led to her becoming a prominent lead in the academy; specializing in arts such as deception, transformations, and reconnaissance.

Mai is an extremely cautious individual early on due to her lack of an adequate level of taijutsu that is present among her peers, making her more like a glass cannon all through the original series. This mindset has made her adopt the overzealous habit of practicing silent movement and information gathering, as well as trap laying for the purpose of forcing necessary defensive measures from enemies, all for the purpose of gathering information.

Outside of combat she is a very approachable person, and rather patient with any hyperactive ninja that may cross her path. She will never try to interrupt a person's conversation and will give them as much time as they need to get their point and argument across. However, this doesn't mean that she won't completely destroy them with her calm, methodical speech. She is well read and does have a broad opinion on the world, and will often use her knowledge to rip apart any person's whole set of ideals and beliefs.

In the same vain as not interrupting a conversation, she can't stand when other people interrupt her conversations. As such she'll usually resort to using her calm nature to put the intruder into an uncomfortable silence until she has finished.

Good Habits:

1. She is patient, and therefore is given the privilege to mentor prospective genin from the Ninja Academy.

2. She is always eager to improve herself, and has focused a large part of her teens to honing her ninjutsu and taijutsu.

3. She is polite, taking her time to help any people of the village that comes across. She never expects anything, but knowing that she's trusted and relied upon is good enough for her.

4. She makes it essential that she and her teammates have a plan beforehand, and can work well enough together to achieve the goal of that plan. She is willing to listen to any concerns over her strategy, and on the same note she is not afraid to offer her two cents if she feels that someone else's plan is flawed.

Bad Habits:

1. She is slightly ignorant to using more advanced genjutsu, and prefers to skip training with it. She can break simple illusions, but using this style is almost foreign to her.

2. She's too reliant on a laid out plan, and will usually steer clear of abandoning it completely. This includes sometimes when her teammates break away from the strategy to go back for a comrade.

3. She is a known snoop, even around the village. She doesn't use this knowledge for personal gain (most of the time), but rather she enjoys just being able to know what's going on in the village, even though everyone is against it.
