Tobias Helliandrahm - Inequivalent Exchange

Name: Tobias Helliandrahm. His friends call him Toby

Age: Graduated from the Academy at 21, could show up anywhere at any time afterwards.

Gender: Male

Species: 100% Pure Human. Or a homunculus, depending on where in the timeline he stands.

Appearance: Tobias graduated as a pale young man with messy platinum blonde hair- luckily for him it was straight and didn't curl much, because he certainly didn't take much care of it in the twilight of his time at The Academy. He stands about 184cm tall without shoes and his eyes are a grassy green.

He was dressed when he crossed his first dimension, clad in a loose white blazer, a charcoal turtleneck and white pants, with a pair of neat hiking boots he'd picked up somewhere that reminded him of a dress shoe. He'd strapped an old sabre to his side before he left, a relatively simple steel thing that one wouldn't expect to have been around since the days of the Round Table- not that they could figure out who had used it. Of course, clothes are difficult to maintain and not something one should wear constantly regardless; he may have had to replace his outfit as he went about his adventure. Given his magic, he may have even had to replace his body (though if I'm honest, he'll probably always be in or have access to his own body at the start of any story)

Personality: Tobias prided himself of being the most normal of his classmates; bright and laid back with a sunny disposition, he has no dreams of world domination nor secret closet full of bodies (aside from Homunculi, but they were ruled to be nonsapient back in the 1700's) and could easily fumble his way through life as a pretty normal youth, if an eccentric one with some strange ideas.
Of course, life would not be that simple; he has some strange ideas on the value of things ranging from gold to life, and sometimes finds himself greeting these different worlds as vacations or otherwise secondary to his own- after all, they stop being real to him once he's left them and the only one he REALLY knows and feels comfortable in is the one he came from. Furthermore, under stress he can be unorthodox and even ruthless; one can make a lot of things disappear, or appear simply wrong if one is pressed.

Special Features/Powers:
Magic
- A skilled mage, eldest descendant (and hence inheritor of the potential of) a long line of wizards, witches, warlocks and other magi. Blessed in the art of Substitution and a diligent student, most of his spells involve it.
- Capable of completely regenerating his mana naturally in a few days, or boosting it by taking from other sources.
- Most common spells include Blink, Portal Replacement, Wind Shot and Spatial Distortion.
- Substitution is a conceptual magic; he doesn't have to use it just on tangible things- everything from souls to fatigue to people to damage can be shuffled about with enough practice.
- Knows a few basic potions and tonics and can whip them up pretty easily, though they're pretty basic- rust removal, minor healing accelerators, mana boosters (which usually don't work for him outside of his world) and rough stimulants, for example.

Three Lives
- A spell set up by his parents before they passed on their magic, he isn't capable of casting it until roughly his thirties.
- Damage can be substituted to other sources, Tobias has a charm on him that links him to three homunculi kept on the Helliandrahm family estate. When he takes damage that would kill him, it's shunted onto them instead. This link is one-sided, so damaging the homunculi would not hurt Tobias.
- Once he can cast the spell, Tobias can link himself to others, or link others as he would himself.

Weaknesses:
Magic
- Substitution magic is not Creation; most any spell involves taking something from somewhere or sending something somewhere else, and usually has to be on the same world he already is.
- Spatial Distortion sounds cool and is his number one method of interdimensional transport, but he has yet to actually nail down targeting it; he usually can't get back to wherever he comes from when he uses it- hence his dimension hopping trips in the first place.
- Though he can filter the magic around him into himself in everything short of desolate, dead dimensions, even in worlds that otherwise don't feature magic, it is a relatively slow process to do so anywhere but his home dimension- like sifting through a swimming pool of blood for the portion that matches his type.

Three Lives
- Three Lives is a complex spell requiring both mastery and depth of mana; he isn't capable of the latter until his thirties, and his mastery fluctuates based on the story. Without both, he can't cast the spell and may in fact interfere with the charm already upon him.
- Though spells exist to pass age and other natural deterioration onto others, they're both highly illegal and even more difficult; Three Lives does not redirect anything but damage inflicted by might or magic.
- Three Lives is a rather specific spell; the damage must be passed from one living thing to another, and using anything less than a person of some description is likely to result in an incomplete transfer where said creature dies before everything is moved. To simplify, Tobias has to sacrifice something that's alive and humanlike to properly use the spell.

Backstory:
Tobias is the eldest son of the respectable Helliandrahm family, inheritor of their two and a half thousand year legacy. Once a major magical family, they were supplanted twice by other powerful wizard families, once during the War of the Roses and once during the Napoleonic Era- who would have thought Bonaparte's comeback tour would be so lacklustre? In modern times, they simply exist in the English countryside, their disgrace mostly (but not entirely) forgotten.

His first ancestors were some of the first to shuck their Druidic legacy, becoming alchemists of incredible success, at least until the Philosopher's Act of 1338 outlawed transmutation involving gold and other precious metals following the Mali Incident. Though they dipped their toes into more typical archmage activities and disciplines, it was irrefutable that others were simply better at it than they; and they in turn had talents above others. It took Baron Edward to focus all his efforts on a specific school of Alchemy that had begun to fall out of favour; the Art of Substitution.

Like all families, the Helliandrahm had their black sheep and misfits; one ancestor transferred parts of his consciousness into his daughters and inhabited their bodies once he died (each went mad within a month of inhabitation, and were hunted before they could expose the secrets of Magic). Another swapped in and out of bodies, using a veritable graveyard of preserved corpses rendered braindead and kept for decades, until a Holy Knight's aunt was taken, and said ancestor was hence cut down. One even tried to trade his eyes for knowledge; whether demon, abyssal entity or spirit he bargained with couldn't really be known, since he spent the rest of his days babbling incoherently in a corner. Relatively speaking, they are an unproblematic family.

Tobias himself packed up at 15 to attend the Academy in London, a place of arcane learning (and actually located on the Isle of Mann, as he was confused to learn) and the next step in the journey of his life following a relatively relaxed early life of dipping his toes in magic and pranking his siblings with said magic.

Though hardly the top of his class, he ended up graduating just short of honours in most of his subjects, though excelling at everything regarding his family's chosen specialisation. As is customary, he was about to embark on a year of travel and experimentation across the world (colloquially called the 'late gap year') when he finished tinkering on a spell he had developed as part of his thesis on Transportation; a particular favourite subject. Though the prototype spell he had made was enough for full marks, the eve of his second week of travelling had presented a breakthrough that left it feeling complete.

As such, as with any red-blooded young mage, he immediately tried it. Suffice to say, when he was halfway through a loophole in dimensional space, the realisation he had never chosen WHERE he was going suddenly came down hard. Almost as hard as the tree he fell right into, the man now in a strange new world with strange new rules.

Well, at least he could say his study was VERY abroad.

Other: Magic is heavily policed in his Earth- he has an encyclopaedia of rules a regulations memorised, as do all proper mages, and is used to any breach of such being greeted by a teleporting man with a very sharp stick appearing in your room at night. The realisation that other dimensions don't have these rules is a trip!
Though he usually can't break a dimensions' rules of magic, as a foreigner to them he can certainly bend them- he can even use some of his spells in worlds without magic, and can find leylines that let him cast Spatial Distortion. Likes to think of himself as a pacifist of sorts- it takes too much energy to fight, so he tends to just avoid them where he can.
