*39* When Fourth got kidnapped
Gemini reached for a watermelon-scented candle in a round crystal glass. He lit it with a lighter, which he ultimately never handed to Rose, since they never saw each other again, and stared at the flickering flame.
He had only just got back here, had already talked to his mother and Dunk, whom P'Zee had sent out on a night patrol. He couldn't stop worrying about Fourth, and he understood more and more why P'Zee was so nervous. He didn't cry, he was too strong for that, but his heart was gripped by a grief he never wanted to feel and felt no one deserved to feel.
This one candle and a small desk lamp were the only sources of light in the whole room besides window, and the walls were danced with shadows cast by the branches of the great old tree outside, illuminated by two street lamps placed a little too close together.
Gemini thought about it. He unknowingly placed the candle on the desk. He didn't pay attention to anything around him, it seemed to him that he had suddenly become someone else. His lips moved as if he were speaking, but no sound came out of his throat, as if he was still Heart. He frowned. He didn't realize that at that very moment, if any stranger looked at him, he might have taken him for a murderous criminal, because there was a real fire hidden in his gaze, the existence of which Gem had never suspected existed inside his soul.
Images he didn't understand flashed before his eyes. They looked like memories, but they couldn't be. Unless they were someone else's memories.
Gem saw a dark room, the only lights being the flames of at least twenty candles, and the silver light of the full moon shining through large pointed windows in the thick stone walls, falling directly on the naked body of a man. In his vision, he looked up and was horrified to discover that the man lying naked on the cold stone floor was none other than his beloved Fourth.
Fourth had a split lip and was bleeding from several cuts on both forearms, his shirt on his chest was torn.
Gemini understood everything even before he heard these words. Words that tore his soul in two, but also words that motivated him to act, that helped him discover the countless reserves of courage in his heart.
"Help me, she kidnapped me, that witch did it again, help me, she's the same person," a voice in his head begged.
The vision disappeared as quickly as it had appeared, as if something had broken the link between them, but now Norawit knew what to do. He had heard from Gun and NuNew about the bond between twin souls, a bond that allowed one to find a loved one through magic.
He picked up and blew out the candle, placed it on the desk so carelessly that it fell to the floor, but he no longer paid any attention to it. He ran out of his room without even closing the door. He had to go to Gun Atthaphan and Off Jumpol first, I'm sure they'd know how to do it. He ran straight to their office. He stopped in front of a colorful door with a doormat that read "Pride." He raised his fist and knocked hard. The echo of fist blows echoed through the empty corridor at that hour. He didn't care if he woke anyone up, he didn't care about anything except for his beloved Fourth, who was in danger, he expected to see Off sleepy and rubbing his eyes at the door, but Gun opened it for him, dressed as if he was about to go out.
“Gemini? Something happened?”
“Yes, I had a vision. You were right about the soulmate bond, it really does exist and Fourth just used it to contact me. I think it's in some old castle, there's no light so they use candles, the walls are... wait... what were the walls like? Stone, I guess. Yes, yes, stone walls, it must be some very old building.”
“Or a church?”
“Church?”
“Yes, European-style churches were often built of stone, had arched, pointed, large windows, usually decorated with colorful stained glass. What was the place you saw like?”
“It was more of an old castle. Although... It's hard to be more specific.”
“Let's go to the Memorial Room. Before his death, Dumbledore gave us a useful invention called the Pensieve, and we'll use it to see all the details in more detail.”
Gemini let Off wrap his arms around his waist and be led ahead, while wondering what else fate would prepare for them. However, he was ready for anything, it was only about saving Fourth. The woman who kidnapped him must not have known about the twin soul bond.
Somewhere along the way he lost one slipper, but he didn't even notice it. He walked along with Off in one shoe with cute gray cat ears. Gun was several paces ahead of them.
* * *
When he looked at the same images again and again, he couldn't calm down. Instead of a heart, a mighty stone rang in his chest, heavy and loud. His mouth went dry. He had to reach for the water bottle that appeared in front of him as soon as he mentally made a wish. He uncorked it and took several long gulps, almost gagging in the process. The smell of herbs in the air made his throat scratchy. He looked at Gun, who was stirring some potion in a small tin cauldron, whispering some sentences in a language unknown to Gemini. Gem thought it must be Latin.
"Hurry up, Gun, I beg you, hurry up! Fourth can't die!" he pleaded mentally.
Off, seeing his nervousness, stepped closer, and although he still didn't like touch, he forced himself to overcome all his mental barriers and clumsily gripped Gemini's shoulder.
“It's okay, we'll find them.”
As he spoke the last word, the door to the Room of Remembrance opened and First Kanaphan, Fourth's older brother, stood there.
First without a word he approached Gemini, grabbed his hand and led him out of the room. It was only in the corridor that he began to explain everything without stopping for a moment.
“I know where they are and I know how to reach them. You trust me, right?”
Gemini had no choice.
“I trust,” was all he said.
First took the stele out of his pocket, drew a circle on the floor, where he stood and dragged Gem inside. Once they were both standing there, he used the stele to draw a new pattern in the air. A moment later, they both felt an unpleasant tug at the navel area.
“Teleportation is never pleasant, hold me tight” First ordered him and hugged him to him. Few seconds later they appeared in different place. It was really old castle placed next to also old, abandoned buildings, where probably no one had come for many years. The area was overgrown with grass and tall weeds. Windows in nearby buildings were smashed, walls covered in graffiti.
Gemini stared at the graffiti in front of him.
YOLO.
You Only Live Once.
He knew those words perfectly. He knew them from the BL series they had recently watched, but only when faced with a real obstacle to overcome and looking into the eyes of real fear could he fully understand what Black, or rather White, playing the role of Black, had heard that day.
Gemini stopped thinking about fear, stopped thinking about the obstacle. All that mattered was what was on the other side: Fourth, New and Fluke, who needed help, who would be doomed without him and First.
"You only live once," he said to First and handed him both pistols. "Cover me, I'll lead them out."
“Are you sure? This woman is unbalanced, there is no telling what she might do, I don't want my little brother to be widowed.”
“We have no choice, First. Remember that show we watched, remember Not Me? We gotta do what we gotta do. Trust me. And again, I won't die, remember? I'm a Hybrid, I already died once, even if I die, I'll be back within 24 hours, don't worry, I won't leave your nong. I love him too much to leave him, I'll always find way back to him. The most important is to help him. He's the one in danger and I think Fluke and NuNew can be there too. Trust me, please. I know I'm young and maybe unexperienced, but we have no choice.”
"Trust me".
Easy to say.
First has always had trouble trusting people. Perhaps because they had deceived him so many times. This time, however, one look at Gemini was enough to understand that the boy was not joking. Despite his young age, he was a born leader, someone who perhaps wouldn't have dreamed of becoming leader of a gang or even something bigger on his own, but when the necessity fell upon him, he took it up like a challenge to his face. There was a lively fire in his eyes. First felt that their new temporary commander ignited the same flame within him with just a glance, and he surrendered to that feeling completely. He pushed aside any unnecessary thoughts and focused on looking around carefully, ready to fire if necessary. If it meant killing someone, he knew he would have to, but he wasn't a First now. Slowly, he was no longer even Akk, now he was Jok, brave, fearless, ready to die for a just cause. Jok was a twin version of him living on planet Gaia II, a much braver but only slightly happier version.
Since the building was somehow protected from the use of magic within it, First couldn't help in any other way, so he just watched his friend walk away. He pulled a black mask over his nose and mouth, put an equally black hood over his head and watched the surroundings from around the corner of the wall.
Gemini was repeating one sentence like a mantra in his mind: "You only live once" and he knew what that meant, this time he understood it fully, for him it was nothing, he knew he can go back, but for Fourth it was his only chance, because it was his „You Only Live Once”. Gem was filled with the desire to act, the desire to save those who were important to him. This crazy woman had trapped them somewhere underground, Gem didn't know exactly where, but he didn't have time to think about it. He ran down the stairs, not caring that he was making a lot of noise. He wanted to be heard, he wanted this crazy woman to know that someone was already rushing to help the imprisoned. He wasn't afraid. The adrenaline was working. He also felt no pain, even when he fell at the entrance to the cellars and cut his leg with a fragment of a broken green alcohol bottle lying on the concrete floor. He was bleeding, but he didn't care. Nothing mattered but Fourth, and he was in danger.
He ran ahead, the cellars seemed to have no end, he looked into each one, shouted their names, he was slowly starting to run out of oxygen. Outside, through the small windows, he saw something even more sinister, and his heart stopped for a moment as he realized what he was looking at. A fire was burning right next to the building's wall. He couldn't be sure if it was just a small local bonfire or if the whole neighborhood was on fire. Time was pressing. Puffs of black smoke were beginning to force their way in, any longer and they would smoke the entire cellar, and then there would be no way out for them.
And only now did Gemini really get scared.
He wasn't afraid of death, he was ready for it, he had already gone through death once and came back, it stopped scaring him. What scared him and almost paralyzed him was the thought of how much Fourth would suffer if the smoke didn't suffocate him right away. He had heard somewhere that being burned alive was the most painful death. He wouldn't wish this on anyone, not even his worst enemies, and now he faced the possibility that this fate would befall someone he loved.
He couldn't allow it. He tore his eyes from the fire and ran forward. He was strengthened by a familiar voice he heard in the semi-darkness. The voice that called his nickname.
“Gemini! GEM!!!” shouted the echo bouncing off the empty walls with Fourth's voice.
“I'M COMING TO YOU!!!” Gemini screamed. He quickly located the door at the end of the corridor, wooden and old, looking flimsy. They were badly gnawed by the tooth of time, rotten. He kicked them with all his might, and they gave way. Apparently, the woman who prepared this trap for them was too sure of herself, too sure of her success and that no one would get here in time, that's why she didn't take care of proper security of the entrance. Gemini was horrified to discover why and what was the reason for his confidence.
