Part 17

Angela POV

I took a deep breath and began my story. "It all started six months after I was born. My parents died in a car accident. They both were only children and my grandparents were too old to care for a newborn. My father's best friend took me in and adopted me against his wife's wishes." The guys looked at me slackjawed and I gave a little giggle.

"I know it all sounds horrible, but it really wasn't as bad as you think. Eventhough she didn't want to adopt me, she never treated me badly. In fact, I never knew I was adopted because my parents treated me like I was their real daughter." I took another deep breath and then continued. "Anyways, they were always very busy with work, so they weren't at home a lot of the time." I started smiling "I know, it sounds like a typical melodrama."

The guys just kept looking at me. "Anyways, that is where Alex comes in." I saw all of them perk up at his name.

Rose POV

"Alex was her older brother. Her parents' biological son. Whenever her parents were away, he would look after her. Whenever she was sick, he would stay by her side until she was better. They were the closest siblings I'd ever met." Woohyun just sat and listened as I explained everything. "I'd always thought he was the best big brother to her. I think that is why I fell for him."

"You were in love with him?" Woohyun finally spoke.

"Yes, I was. He was my first crush, first kiss, first boyfriend, and first love. He was three years older than Angela and I." I took another sip from my smoothie. "Now that I think about it, Alex would be the same age as Sunggyu if he were..."

Angela POV

"When Rose and Alex started dating I was so happy for them. I remember hoping that they would get married so that Rose and I could be real sisters. It was my brother's graduation and as always, my parents were out of town on business. He was driving, Rose was in the passenger seat and I was in the back. The light had just turned green and we started going forward when a drunk driver ran the red light and hit us. I remember the car spinning around and Rose and I screaming."

Rose POV

"The rest of the accident was a blur. Both Angela and I remember bits and pieces. The police arrived first, they called for the ambulance and fire truck. They had to use the 'jaws of life' to pry open Alex's door to get him out. Angela and I were pretty banged up, but Alex looked bad."

I could tell that Woohyun knew what happened next by the look on his face, but he just sat there and let me tell the story. "Angela and I were put in one ambulance and Alex was in another. They rushed us to the hospital. Angela kept screaming and crying for her brother. She kept fighting against the paramedics."

Angela POV

"I was fighting so much that they had to strap me down. When we arrived at the hospital, they brought me and Rose into a room and began to examine us. I was still screaming and trying to get up, so they had to sedate me." The guys just sat there and listened as I explained everything. "They thoroughly checked us out to make sure we were alright. My brother, on the other hand, was brought into emergency surgery. Apparently, he was bleeding internally." I choked back my tears.

Rose POV

"My parents arrived and I was cleared for discharge. I stayed by Angela's side and waited for any news about Alex. When Angela woke up, the doctors came in and asked where her parents were. Angela told them that they were out of town on business. My parents said that they would take responsibility for both Angela and Alex. The doctors said 'I think you should call their parents'. My parents asked what was going on and the doctors asked to speak to them in private. My parents left me with Angela and spoke to them out in the hall. When my parents returned, my mother was crying."

Angela POV

"When her parents came back in the room, her mother was crying. Her father asked if I knew where my parents were and how to contact them. I told him that my parents were in England and gave him the number. Her mother rushed to my side and embraced me while continuing to sob. Her father left the room to call my parents. When he returned, the doctors said that they could discharge me to their care. I asked where my brother was and when we would be able to see him."

The guys seemed to understand where the story was going and Hoya interrupted "You don't have to say anymore. I think we all understand."

I smiled and said "Actually, I think you should probably hear me out." They looked at one another and then nodded for me to continue. "The doctors said that my brother's injuries were too severe and that they had tried their best, but they weren't able to stop the bleeding. 'I'm truly sorry, but your brother has passed away' the doctor said. Rose and I just stared at each other in shock, then we started to cry."

Rose POV

"Her parents had made all the funeral arrangements from abroad and arrived the following morning. The wake took place two days after the accident. Her parents were obviously devastated by the loss of their son, but the look her mother gave Angela creeped me out. It was a look of absolute hate. I had never seen her mother look that way before and it scared me. The wake lasted two days and during that time Angela's parents had asked if she could stay at my house. They had said that they thought it might be better for her to be with her friend, but that wasn't the real reason at all."

Angela POV

"My parents asked to speak to Rose's parents in private after the first day of mourning. Rose and I had gone outside to get some fresh air, but it was a little chilly so I ran back inside for my coat. That is when I overheard our parents talking. My father asked if Rose's parents wouldn't mind if I stayed with them for the time being. Her parents said that they didn't mind as I was Rose's best friend, but also said that they thought it might be better for her to be with her family. 'She is not our family!' my mother screamed. Then she turned to my father and said 'I told you I didn't want to take her in! Why didn't you listen to me?' and began to cry. I stumbled backwards and knocked over a vase of flowers. My father came out and saw me on the floor. He looked at me wide eyed 'Angela! What are you doing here?' "

"All I could do was look up at him and stutter 'I just came back to get my coat.'  Then my mother strolled over and said 'You don't have to pretend that you didn't hear.  Actually, I'm glad you heard.' "

" 'Darling, please this isn't the time for this. Alex...' My father tried to reason with her, but she just wouldn't listen. 'Is Dead!' she screamed 'Alex is dead, but it should have been you!' she pointed to me. 'Why did he have to die? Why my son? It should have been you! Then you could be with your parents and my son would still be with me!' She stormed past me crying. Rose's parents assured my father that they would take good care of me and told him to go and take care of my mother."

Rose POV

"I had no clue what had happened while she was inside. My father came out with his arm around Angela and my mother said that she would be staying with us for a while. Since that day, I've never seen Angela cry. She didn't even cry at the funeral. Whenever someone mentioned Alex, she would just pretend that she didn't hear them and walk away. In all honesty, I thought she didn't care that he had died. I only recently found out from my parents about what happened that day, but it didn't change the fact that I was still mad at her for acting like he never existed. That is why I lashed out at her. Even if she didn't want to talk about it with others, she could have been honest with me. We both loved him" I cried.

"After the funeral, Angela's parents moved to England. They left the house in her name and gave her a credit card to use for whatever she wanted or needed."

Angela POV

"I think it was my father's last gift to me" I cried. "I knew that he didn't want to abandon me, but I also knew how much he loved my mother."

"How can you still call her your mother?" Sungjong asked. "She basically said that she wished you were dead."

I smiled with tearfilled eyes. "She is the only mother I've ever known. I know that she was not thinking rationally when she said that, but I also know that part of her truly felt that way. The day my parents left for England, I made a promise to myself."

"What promise did you make?" L asked.

"I promised myself that I wouldn't be a burden to my parents. They had already done so much for me that I couldn't ask for more. I finished high school in the top ten percentage of my class and got a full scholarship to attend the college of my choice. I moved out of the house and I haven't returned since. Rose goes by the house from time to time to check on it and I had her hire a housekeeper to take care of cleaning it for me."

Rose POV

"Why didn't she just sell it?" Woohyun asked. "If she has no intention of ever going back there, she should just sell it."

"Do you think you could sell the house you grew up in?" I asked back.

Woohyun looked up at me in surprise, then he thought for a moment and said "No, I don't think I could."

I smiled. "That house is the only place she has ever considered home. It is the place that holds all the memories of Alex. She will never sell that house, but she will never go back there either. She promised herself that she wouldn't burden her parents any more. She would succeed or fail on her own. I don't think she has even talked to her parents since they moved away."

Angela POV

"What about your parents?" Sungyeol asked

"What about them?"

"Are they still in England? Do you talk to them often?" he asked earnestly.

I smiled sadly and said "I haven't spoken to them since they left for England. As far as I know, they are still there."

"How would you know if you never talk to them?" Dongwoo asked.

"Just because I don't talk to them, doesn't mean I don't care about them anymore. My parents work for a well known company over there, so all I have to do is look them up online. As long as they are happy and I'm not burdening them, I'll be satisfied." I looked around the room at the guys and smiled. "So that is my story."
