Chapter 26
" Have they been purified?" My father asked.
" Yes." I murmured. Daniel and Carter lie on the couch, cold to the touch. Everyone was tense but cool and understood the situation. Jason sat beside them, rubbing warmth into Carter's hand. I almost pitied him.
Joshua stood by my side, still and unmoving. My father sat in the corner, restless. I knew he would not sleep until he was sure his sons were absolutely fine.
" Are you alright?" He asked gently
" No." I whispered back. He seemed almost hazy .
" Talk to me."
" I'm worried." I replied
" It won't help you much, though. You could use some rest, baby"
"... Yeah." I walked back to bed, tired and a little groggy. I hadn't realized I was falling until I felt Joshua catch me. I stumbled for a moment. Joshua than, gently carried me to bed. His kiss was the last thing I felt before I blacked out completely.

" Baby, are you okay? Cassandra, talk to me!" I heard the panic in his voice. I was terribly sore all over and felt cold and clammy. I wasn't fully conscious, but I could hear his desperate pleas loud and clear. I hadn't felt anything like this before. After a minute, I could open my eyes and look at him. My father sat next to me, along with Carter and Jason. Daniel was at the edge of my bed, worry and fear in his eyes. Joshua gently held me in his arms, almost sobbing.
" How do you feel?" He asked.
" Joshua, I-" I stopped speaking, as I felt my head spin. Everything was moving too fast or... Was it too slow? I couldn't focus at all. A gut wrenching tug purged blood; black lacquer and gooey ink, all over me. I could no longer properly maintain consciousness.
Third Person
Daniel wanted to reach out and touch his weak sister. He wanted to give all his energy and love and passion to his sister if it meant she would be okay. Cole moved closer to his daughter, trying to understand and quickly. Joshua held a bit tighter, sobbing into his wife's shoulder. He wasn't crying because he thought she might be dead, but rather the fact that he didn't know how to help her. An odd thought came to his mine.
" Dad, is she gonna be okay?" Daniel stammered.
" I'm not sure." He answered, his voice cracking painfully. He would gladly trade his life for hers in a heartbeat.
" Should we get the doctor?" Jason asked.
" Yes, Carter, rip open a portal and get the doctor." They nodded.
" On it."
" Baby, do demons get fat?"
" I don't particularly know."
" I think I've put on a little weight."
" I love you with or without the weight."
Joshua's hand began to reach down to her stomach, his suspicions getting the best of him. Sure enough, there was a gentle, warm small mound at her belly. He sobbed a cry of joy, almost it seemed.
" She's pregnant. She just needs proper care and rest."
"... That almost explains all her symptoms." Joshua blushed hard. For a baby to be created, both parties had to be in agreement about it or had to have a child in mind at the time of intercourse. He hadn't exactly had the thought of a child, but simply wanting something much more with his wife. Either way, if she had or had not wanted one, she couldn't have known it would do this to her. He felt like crying. For what, he didnt fully know. He couldn't speak for a while. He... was going to be... a father? He didn't even know if he was prepared for that. He didnt even fully understand that. A tall woman with warm skin and an expressionless face walked in the room. She moved neither fast nor slow but she walked with purpose.
"Amber, thank you so much for coming." Cole sighed heavily. Amber's voice was below a whisper, but Cole knew what she said.
" She is going to give birth soon. She's at high risk of perish because she wasn't ready to be inhabited by a child yet." She had told him.
" Wait... Amber ...what does that mean?" Cole choked.
" She could die from this." she whispered, pushing aside her lengthy curls. She gently placed her frigid fingers against Cassandra's head and kept them there.
" Your daughter... will die whether or not the baby is born. Turn the human that's still in her now... and she has a much higher chance of living."
" If that's the case, why is she purging blood?" Amber awkwardly paused.
" Because the baby is human. A weak supernatural, and mortal. It's rejecting everything. Her blood, food, nutrients... the little that is still human in her is being accepted. If we kill what little human is in her, the baby will eventually die, leaving your daughter well again." The look of pure fury behind Joshua's eyes was unmistakable.
" Thank you, doctor." Cole whispered. She sat down in a chair next to her bed and gently sat back.
" If she makes it to the birth stage, call me." Everyone nodded. She quickly left.
" Cole, what the fuck?"
" Look, I get that you're-"
" You and I both know that's not an option!" He cried. He sobbed into Cassandra's pale body. He didn't want his only love to die, but wasn't going to kill the child either. It wasn't its fault it was human.
" Joshua..." Cassandra whispered. She looked terribly sick and had black residue on her cheeks and neck.
" I heard..."
" I'm so sorry, Cass-"
" I don't care if I am obliterated." She whispered. Everyone went silent Carter looked at his twin sister, with a look of pure hurt. That look of hurt turned into one of admiration. He began to understand... it's not that she didn't care... but it was that she knew this entire situation was bigger than just her. Daniel, on the other hand, couldn't understand at all, why she would even think such a thing. Joshua was silent. His tears ran dry and his hand moved to hers.
" I don't care if I am obliterated. By any means, I said by any means, you are to keep this child alive." She said with as much force as she could muster. She looked stable at that time, but nobody knew how long that would last.
"Cassandra... yes. But if there is a way that will both save the child's life and your own...Baby I'll take that chance." He almost pleaded.
" But if things really go left... " she whispered, chuckling softly. She sighed and rest her head on her husbands collar. In his arms, she felt safe and loved and appreciated. Sick and ill, yes. But still very much alright. Her nightgown bulged slightly because of her new baby belly. Joshua helped her stand. She walked over to her bathroom and closed the door behind her. She tried her absolute best to get the blood out of her gown, but it had stained black. She gently lifted her gown above her head and threw the dress in the waste basket. She looked to the side through a mirror at her round stomach.
" And you're human, aren't you?" She murmured to herself. She caressed her stomach, adoring what was to come in less than a fortnight. She loved it already. A brisk but gentle knock startled her out of her loving thoughts. She stepped out of the door range. It lightly opened and her husband was almost startled at her naked appearance. He closed the door and sighed.
" Did you hear... Amber's proposal?"
" I did." She whispered, nodding. She pulled her hair back in a bun and sighed.
" I'm sorry for talking to your father that way."
" He and I both understand. It's scarier for us because... we'll be new parents." She whispered, smiling.
" Yeah. How do you feel?" He asked shyly.
" I feel... a little... disappointed."
" Why, what's wrong?" She paused, trying to get the words out.
" You don't seem as excited as I would have hoped, so I wanted to know if everything is alright."
" Hmmm. Maybe not." He paused and smiled, blushing harshly. He gently held her by the waist. She almost objected, being that she was in some pain, but her husband's opinion was what she'd been waiting to hear." I am fucking thrilled. We're having a baby. You'll be a mother. I'm going to be a father. I don't think I could ask for anything better." He chuckled, kissing her deeply. His hand moved up toward her sensitive belly and lovingly rubbed it. Cassandra laughed and hugged him as close as she could. She was afraid. He couldn't tell just yet...but more than anything, she was afraid.
