Retail Therapy

Good morning Kitten. I'm glad we managed to come to an agreement last night...If you're wondering how I got your number, I stole your phone when you popped to the toilet. Check under S
xJx

I stare gormlessly at the bright screen of the phone between my fingertips. My phone. Which Jacob had stolen. How dare he!

Well, you did leave it in plain view on the table.

Now I want to throw the phone out of my bedroom window, at the idea of it having been in his masculine hands. It must surely tainted now, by the devil himself. Re-reading through his text again piques my curiosity. How does the letter S have any significance to him whatsoever? Sighing, I scroll through the address book and stop on the said letter. Then, I spot it, in bold capital letters before me.

SEX GOD.

I scoff at the two little words staring back at me. The phone does not lie. Though he's still an audacious asshole. Licking my lips I move my fingers swiftly across the screen to reply.

I do recall I didn't have much choice in the matter. I've changed your name to Average. More suited to you I believe.
Kitty

I purposely sign off the text with my name. Kitty. Not Kitten! Each time Jacob calls me by that name, he manages to imply a provocative tone, and my knees do this odd wobbly thing in response.

Almost immediately after hitting send another text flashes up on the screen.

Kitten you're killing me here! No kisses?
xJx

I chuckle to myself at his words.

Quickly scrolling down and through the names in my address book (which is limited due to my lack of popularity), I push my finger down on my best friends name. Pressing the phone to my ear, it rings out a few times before she answers.

"Kat!" She squeals, and I have to distance the phone from my ear a little, due to the sheer volume her small mouth produces. "What? No, I'm talking to Kitty. Shut up, Joel." I can hear her arguing with her younger brother in the background. "Have you started out yet?"

"No," I reply, "I wanted to check you still wanted to go."

"Of course I still want to go!" She says as if it should be blatantly obvious to me. "I'll meet you at the car park in ten, ok?"

And with that, she's gone. Danielle has always had an awful habit of putting the phone down without saying goodbye. When we were first getting to know each other, I felt offended, but now I realise that's just one of her many quirks. To anyone who doesn't know her, it sounds incredibly rude.

By the time I reach the mall, the walkways are full of hundreds of shoppers. Today is Saturday, probably the busiest of the seven days in the week for retail. Schools are out and many people have their weekends free from their ludicrously hectic lifestyles. I'm not sure why Danielle chose today of all days, I mean we have until next Saturday until the party, a whole week away.

Yes, that's right, you heard me. Me- Kitty Melissa White, received an invite to a party!

Well, no, technically it was Dannielle's invite.

Although that's beside the point, the invite states that she can bring a friend, and she, of course, chose me as that friend.

The purpose of our weekend shopping spree was to look for a new outfit for said party. And probably shoes, jewellery and handbags if Danni has anything to do with it. Not that she doesn't have plenty of the above mentioned, but she's a dedicated shopaholic.

I plan to purchase a single dress. The thought of spending my cold hard-earned cash on anything else, in our current predicament would be a total waste of money.

I spot Danni waiting outside of a popular high street chain. She arrived here maybe five minutes ago, yet already, she has a brown paper bag draped over her arm, indicating that she has obviously made her first purchase. See what I mean?

Today she looks super stylish in an emerald green sleeveless blouse, tucked neatly into a knee-length black pencil skirt. A pair of glitzy ankle boots complete the picture-perfect image. And as they catch the light they threaten to blind me, if I hold my gaze on them for any length of time. Danni looks stylish every single day of the year. Mirroring one of those runway supermodels in an overly priced fashion magazine.

I mean, who can pull off the colour green? I sure as hell couldn't.

"Kat!" She calls across the building, and I glance around at the people now staring in my direction. If there's one thing Danielle does not execute well- it is subtlety.

"Danni," I acknowledge her with a smile, "I see you've already started." I motion to the bag dangling over her arm.

"Oh, this! It was such a bargain, I just had to have it!"

Sure, there's one I haven't heard a million times before.

"So, where to?"

A few minutes pass by, as she appears to mull over something in her mind. Then, suddenly she shouts in an over-excited tone. "Lipsy!"

The large store already has a mass of women of varying ages, launching themselves at the sales rails and riffling through the cluttered clothes hangers, casting aside unwanted garments as though they have no value. They rush around in their frenzied states, searching for their dream outfit. Only to realise the next day they purchased entirely on impulse and when they try it on in the comfort of their own homes, it looks more of a nightmare than a dream.

Can you tell I am not a fan of shopping?

Danni spends a sufficient fifteen minutes or so searching through the cluttered rails, while I hang back in the shadows, waiting for her to work her magic. Next thing I know, she hauls out a garment and is forcibly shoving it into my open hands.

"This is perfect!" She exclaims, taking time to pronounce each word. "It will look amazing on you! Go try it on," she urges, ushering me over to a sign that reads changing rooms in large letters.

I can't gauge much about the dress just by viewing it slung over my arm the way it currently Is, other than the shade sits somewhere mid-range of a royal blue and a violet. Once I finally step through to the small claustrophobic cubicle, I hastily pull the dress over my head and slide my arms through the sleeves.

Slowly, I turn to face the opposite wall, where the full-length mirror hangs, to observe my reflection. Danielle's done it again. The material of the dress fits snug against my body, bringing attention to my curvier areas. Lying just above the knee, it's the ideal length. Lace adorns the long sleeves and the chest area, leading up to a round neckline, allowing adequate space for a pretty necklace to hang. It makes me look sophisticated but sexy, the perfect combination. If I do say so myself.

"Let me see! Let me see!" Danni's practically begging.

Tugging sharply on the curtain, I yank the material across to reveal her angelic face. I pull a pouty face (like those Instagram girls do) and pose, which makes Danni giggle.

"What did I say?" She claps her hands proudly, referring to her fantastic fashion sense.

"I love it!" I squeal in delight. "I can't believe you. First dress, first shop"

Yeah, she is wasted, as a waitress.

"Did you find a dress?" I ask curiously, noticing the bundle tucked under her right arm.

She's smiling as she holds up a beautiful white body con dress with long sleeves, at her side. Around the waist is a thick band of black material. Simple but I guarantee she'll look stunning in it. Saying that she'd still look stunning in a black bin liner.

"Ooh yes, I love that. It's very you" I coo at her.

"I know right!" She grins widely at my approval. "Let's go pay for these, then we can grab some lunch."

"Sure," I smile back.

We sit In the quieter area of the food court, outside a quirky sandwich shop. Dannielle is across the table from me with her plastic tub of salad, which looks to be mostly an abundance of leaves, and to me, totally inedible.

She's eyeing me with interest and my intuition leads me to believe she's about to bring up Jacob. I can tell by the mischievous glint in her pretty almond eyes.

"Oh my gosh, I almost forgot to ask you!" She bleats. "How did your date with Jacob go?"

"How did I guess that you were behind that Miss Cupid! I wouldn't exactly call it a date to be honest," I scoff at the recollection of the previous evening, where Jacob blackmailed me into going out with him to eat. "Didn't you hear me when I said I'm not looking for another man?" I interrogate her, my eyes narrow in annoyance at my best friends complete disregard for our previous conversation.

"But," she says extending the t so it sounds almost persuasive. "You should be ecstatic that Jacob's after you."

Oh yeah, that's me. Absolute ecstatic.

Can you sense the hint of sarcasm?

She continues schmoozing about him favourably. "I mean Jacob Wilde is hot. And I mean hot with a double T."

I stare up at her from my ham salad baguette and scowl. "He's also an egotistical jerk," I add, "I mean, obnoxious just doesn't cut it with him."

She giggles at my seemingly warped view of Jacob. "Don't be silly. Jacob's lovely."

"Jacob's about as lovely as stepping on a block of Lego," I grunt, causing her to giggle again.

"Ooh. I'll be right back Kitty. I've just seen some gorgeous shoes in the window over there!"

My eyes roll of their own accord as she shoots off in the general direction of the shops. She must have eyed them up when we were walking around the shops beforehand, there's no way her eyesight is that good. Left alone to my own devices, I find my thoughts shifting to Jacob and the disaster of the previous evening. I wonder what he's doing right now.

Why am I even thinking about him? I shouldn't care.

But you do, my conscience tells me.

He could be going to Lucas's party on Saturday. If he is, then I could ask him to drive us there. Might as well get some use from him while he's insisting on hanging around. Pulling my phone out of my pocket, I send him a quick text.

While I wait for a reply, I struggle with my insecurities. Without Dannielle's presence, my senses raise to high alert. I become aware of every noise around me, the hustle and bustle of the shoppers, the bell that indicates food is ready for serving, even the distant crying of a baby in its mother's arms. This happens, when I'm alone in public places. An unfortunate result of my last relationship.

My phone vibrates in my hand, startling me from my irrational mind, and indicating that I've received a text.

Kitten, nice to hear from you again so soon =]. Nope I'm not going to the party
xJx

I frown at the reply. I can't help but feel disappointed. Nevertheless, I tap a reply and hit send.

Gee, I thought with a last name like Wilde, you'd live up to it. I thought I had you all figured out Jacob
Kitty

His response is way too quick. He must be glued to his phone. Having said that, most of the population are these days. Whatever happened to having a conversation with another in person, rather than through a screen of glass and electronics.

Lol. You have no idea my little Sex Kitten =p
xJx

I stare at the text in outrage. Who exactly does this boy think he is? Growling lowly, I switch my phone off and thrust it back in my pocket under the table. He won't be getting the satisfaction of any more texts from yours truly today, that's for sure.
