I Must Forget About Jacob Wilde
Almost a week has passed since I've seen or heard from Jacob Wilde, and I've convinced myself I don't care. I received no text from him apologising for the incident at the coffee shop, not that I'd been expecting one of course. I'd been deadly serious when I told him to stay out of my way.
Ever since he entered my life with his annoyingly witty and overconfident persona, I'd had nothing but trouble, and nothing but horrible memories arising which I didn't want to retrace. I'd do anything to forget the events of the past, but I guess they would always be there, gnawing away at my conscience.
Hopefully not forever.
And definitely not for tonight. Tonight is the night of the highly anticipated party, and through my determination, I will make the most of it. The plan; to dress up, let my hair down and enjoy myself. Therefore I will forget about everything from my mundane existence, including the egotistical Mr Wilde. I'm not planning on going as myself, nope, I'm going as 'Kitty Luxe,' the sexy, confident, independent woman from the dance floor.
Well, her characteristics anyway.
Grinning at my reflection in the mirror, I slide a deep red colour across my lips, completing my sultry cover up for the evening. I push the lid back on the lipstick tube and slip it into my silver clutch bag. The familiar chime of the doorbell rings through my ears, and I bound down the stairs like a kid on Christmas morning.
Flinging the door open I peer at the man on the other side and nod in approval. Ollie is looking fine in a red and black chequered shirt that nicely hugs his abdominals and a pair of dark denim jeans that hang loosely on his hips. His chestnut hair is gelled into stylish spikes on top of his head. When his chocolate coloured eyes meet mine, they widen to the size of saucers.
"Ollie," I smile in acknowledgement.
"Holy-" Ollie abruptly shuts his mouth, eyes shifting to glance over my shoulder. He coughs to clear his throat, "I mean. You look nice Kitty."
A disapproving grunt startles me, and I spin on my heel to see my brother staring daggers at the poor boy on my doorstep. I can imagine what he's thinking.
Ollie isn't my date, he's Danielle's. Well, not officially, but he may as well be.
My throat produces a nervous giggling noise, whilst I give Hunter a playful shove to the chest. His pupils move swiftly to take in my appearance, causing his eyes to narrow in distaste. I present him a with big cheesy grin, revealing most of my teeth.
"Don't worry big brother, I'll be fine," I insist, patting him lightly on the arm.
He nods reluctantly, before turning his attention back to Ollie. "Just be careful," he begins lecturing, "there's a lot of jerks at these parties. I should know, I used to go to them."
"I will be," I assure him, rolling my eyes skyward.
As I go to turn towards the door, a hand clutches my wrist to pull me back. I roll my eyes at the miniature canister of pepper spray in my brother's outstretched palm.
"Hunter, I-"
He immediately cuts me off with a stern look. "Put it in your bag, just in case," he insists.
I know he's not going to back down, so with a large sigh, I slip the can into my clutch. Then I carefully step into a pair of black parent heels, instantly increasing my height by a good couple of inches. Ollie eyes me as we walk up the drive to where his car awaits us.
"I hope you're not planning on using that on me," he jokes, with an eyebrow raised.
I give him a small smile. "It depends how much you annoy me," I reply, poking my tongue out between my lips.
Danielle beams at me from the back seat, a beer can already clutched between her fingers. I slip into the seat beside the blonde bombshell, and she shoves a can into my hand, which I wrap my fingers around and immediately take a swig. The alcohol satisfies my tastebuds, while I sink deep into the leather seat enjoying the anticipation of what's to come.
As we pull up into the elongated driveway, the first thing that catches my attention is the number of people already occupying the space. A long line of a wide diversity of cars extends down to the end of the street. Various groups of people litter the large front lawn, and there's a couple making out (he's pretty much mounting her actually), up against the side of the house.
Lovely.
Being the perfect gentlemen Ollie presents himself as he pulls open the car door, and I climb out, with Danni on my tail. I smooth my hands over the material of my dress, conscious of the hundreds of pairs of eyes watching my every move.
"Danielle!"
All three of us turn to see who the deep voice belongs to.
"Glad you could make it," the man tries to project his voice over the noise of the party, "Ollie," he gives him a nod. "And who is your gorgeous friend?" at this point he motions to me, which of course causes me to flush scarlet.
Luca seems like a nice enough guy, tall, dark, athletic build. But here's the thing; he's in the same school as me and has been for at least four years, yet he apparently has no idea who I am. At most, we've exchanged a 'hello' in greeting, so I'm a little freaked out as to how he's now acting. Apparently, I must be invisible to the human eye. Luca's eyes glide over my body.
Maybe not.
"This," Danni giggles, wrapping an arm around my waist and pulling me towards her, "is my best friend Kitty!"
"It's a pleasure to meet you beautiful," he winks in my direction gesturing to the open front door. "Do go in, and join the party. Grab a drink, or two. Help yourself."
Linking my arm with Danni's, we head beyond the door. The smell that hits me upon entering the building is anything but pleasant. It's a mixture of alcohol, sweat, and hormones, and it's no wonder with the house as jam-packed as it is with horny teenagers. Danni shoves her way past several sodden bodies blocking our way, her hand linked in mine, dragging me in tow.
After much squeezing and manoeuvring, we eventually reach the kitchen, and t's just as busy as the rest of the rooms in the house. Danni dunks a plastic cup into a large bowl on the kitchen counter, filling it with whatever concoction the liquid within contains. She hands me the cup and I stare at the fluorescent orange drink floating within the glass. It looks dangerous, radioactive even, but Danni shrugs and takes a massive gulp. Chuckling to herself, she leads me back to the crowded living room, where a Katy Perry song blasts from the speakers.
Reaching out for my hand, she drags me to a tiny space of floor she's somehow managed to clear of bodies. She swings her hips confidently to the beat, letting the rhythm guide her movements. Many pairs of eyes watch her, like lions preying on a single unprotected wilder beast. Included in the pride is Oliver, who observes from the corner of the room. An unidentifiable emotion flickers in his chocolate orbs as he meets my gaze, but he swiftly returns to talking to a group of guys.
Shrugging it off, I spin around and throw myself into my best friends arms. A massive grin surfaces on her face as we dance together, sexily, teasing the men surrounding us. Grinding her hips up against me, she slowly and expertly makes her way down my body to the floor. When she resurfaces again, she flings herself at me, and her pink lips find mine. I freeze for a second, momentarily, before kissing her back and causing an uproar of wolf whistles throughout the room. I've kissed Danielle plenty of times before, it's nothing new. Normally I would be insecure, with anyone else I would be watching the crowds every move, but Danielle's presence is totally empowering. Hell, I'd even consider turning lesbian for her.
What seems like hours pass while we dance and many drinks consumed by both of us. My head is buzzing from the alcohol and the adrenaline pumping through my veins. It feels amazing like I could conquer anything the world throws at me. I could climb Mt Everest.
Well, maybe not in my current state.
"Ollie!" Danni whines over the loud music. "Can you get me and Kat another drink please?"
Ollie turns from the group of guys he's talking to and his eyebrows raise skyward at Danni. "I think you and Kitty have had quite enough to drink don't you?"
Danni pouts at him. "No," she replies solemnly, "I'll go grab the drinks, Kat! You're such a party pooper, Ollie!"
I nod at her from my seat on the black leather sofa, telepathically thanking Ollie for putting a stop to that, I'm positive I can't handle any more alcohol. My head is already about to explode. We must have danced for hours together, and now I've stopped, it's clear to me just how sore and swollen my feet are. Why do we women put ourselves through so much agony for fashion?
Standing up carefully and having the sudden urge to use the bathroom, I tear my feet from the sticky floor. Glancing around, I spot Oliver and when he sees me, he strides over to meet me.
"Ollie. I twhink I-sneed to-wee," I slur.
"Sure thing Kitty," he chuckles, "I'll go haul Danni's arse out of the kitchen and meet you out the front."
I begin my battle through bodies to reach the top floor. On my ascent up the stairs a hand grasps my arse on the way up. Startled I spin around, to see no one in close enough vicinity to be the culprit. A flurry of confusion travels through my body but I shake it off and turn back.
And that's when I see him. Staring down at me with that menacing smile. That sickening smile I never wanted to see again. One hand flies over my mouth, and the other grasps the handrail to prevent me from tumbling backwards to my death.
In the blink of an eye, he's gone, vanished from sight as if he was never there. Had he been there? I immediately abandon my need to relieve myself and instead race in the opposite direction, desperate to escape.
Stumbling out into the harsh cold air, I notice the huge lack of people in the front garden compared to when we arrived. It must be really late. A group of five, maybe six guys are loitering under a couple of oak trees, smoking. As I edge past them, the shortest man of the group turns towards me, a smirk plastered on his face. His hand latches onto my wrist, causing me to gasp.
