Chapter 24
It was a matter of seconds before everyone snapped out of their haze and went into action. Nurses quickly surrounded us, bringing a gurney, carefully lifting him and applying pressure to his wound, immediately yelling instructions. "What the hell happened to him?" The direction may be applying to me since I did lug him inside the hospital, bleeding and all.
"I stabbed him." For a moment everyone stays silent, looking at one another. "Yeah I'm the crazy bitch in this town what else is new?" I spy one of the younger female nurses gawking at me, I smile at her. In return she takes a step back away from me.
I watch as they wheel him away. Taking that as my que to exit I start to turn when a red haired nurse stops me, along with the younger nurse who was clearly afraid of me, and a male nurse that was tall and lanky.
"Annabeth you can't go we need you to come with us so that way we could take care of you." I cross my arms, defiantly. I wasn't going to stay here any moment longer than necessary even if my body vibrated with pain and I was undeniably tired and weak.
She turns to the receptionist who was standing behind the counter watching the whole scene unfold as if it were a soap opera. "Call Annabeth's father and tell him he has to come down here straight away."
She nods her head dimly and sits down, she picks up the phone already putting the numbers down without even looking them up on files. "It's not necessary I'm going home." Her eyes flicker between the red haired nurse and I, with question.
I turn around, surprising myself when I get dizzy, stumbling to the side. Hands were on me in an instant helping to keep me upright." Get her a gurney."
I sigh, "don't be ridiculous I can walk." I mumble. When the gurney is placed in front of me I, eye it with mixed feelings before actually sitting on it.
Trying desperately to calm my anxiety I try playing it off not wanting it to show, so I turn to the red head. "So tell me Carly, am I gonna get my old room back or is it already taken?"
"You don't have a room here Annabeth now please lay down all the way." This time I do as she says without protest, it didn't matter anyways I was too tired to even sit upright at this point.
My eyelids slowly begin to open and close as the bright white lights flash as I'm wheeled away. "Guess that means it's taken," I say sleepily.
"Annabeth listen to me I need you to stay awake, the doctor has to see you." Fighting off sleep was by far the hardest thing known to earth. Especially because I kept flinching from the bright lights and wanted nothing more than to keep them closed.
"Well then what the hell is taking him so long?"
We arrive in a room, and without wanting them to, they help me onto the bed anyways. I turn my head to the side, "Oh would you look at that, it looks like I got my room after all." I chuckle. "Oh what a cruel, cruel world we live in." Looking up I catch the young nurse staring at me so I smile at her, turning my head slightly to the side. "Go see what's taking the doctors time."
Both of them rush to the door, as soon as they were out of the room they started having a low conversation, probably about me. "You need to stop tormenting the nurses." I turn to Carly, raising my eyebrow but flinch from the pain.
"What's the fun in that?" She nods her at me, closing the curtain she lays the hospital gown in the bed.
"You're not serious, I can't wear that," I stare at it then her slightly panicked.
"You have to. Here I'll help you," she helps me get out of my shirt, careful with my scratches and cuts on my arms. She gasps when she sees the large forming bruises on my sides.
"I hope I don't have to take these off because I kind of don't have any underwears on."
"Well you're going to have to. From the look of your jeans it looks like you may have cuts on your thigh." Sighing, I pull on the gown. I start removing my shoes then carefully sit on the side of the bed and remove my jeans. Carly doing her best to help me. I groaned in pain as I finally kick my jeans off and quickly go under the sheets. "Annabeth..." I smile at the blonde haired, blue eyed, doctor in my room.
"Well hello Jackson..." I lay as comfortable as I can be on a hospital bed.
"Doctor Hayes to you. Want to tell me what happened to you tonight?" He trades places with Carly once she gathers all my things. He pulls out a tiny flashlight from his pocket and follow the light as per usual.
"Nothing much, just a wild night out."
Clicking the light off he slips it back in his pocket. Then gently pulls my hair away from my neck, "Some wild night you had."
Carly grabs my arm, putting on a wristband with my information. "Do you have any pain in your head, stomach, anywhere?"
I stay silent, Carly sighs staring at Jackson she nods her head down at me. "She has bruises on her stomach, a black eye forming on her left eye, pieces of glass shards on her thighs and arms, with a few scratches, a cut on her ankle," they stare at my right ankle that was still slightly bleeding. "Then there's her neck."
He stares down at me, "Is there anything else? We need to know Annabeth." I bite the inside of my lip, nibbling on it.
"Yeah, my head is pounding and my chest hurts a bit." He puts on his Stethoscope, I sit up already knowing the routine.
He gently does his thing, telling me when to breath deeply and all that. Afterward he gently touches the back of my head, "You may have a closed head injury but I want to do a CT scan just in case. How did you get hurt?"
"He shoved me onto the brick wall." He nods his head.
"Okay, Carly can you go..."
"I'm on it." She rushes out the room.
"Okay Annabeth I'm going to have to take a look of your stomach." Nodding my head I make sure the covers were covering my bare arse and mentionable as I lift my gown up slightly so he was be able to see the bruises and not my bra.
"Tell me when it hurts," he gently begins touching my stomach, at first it was bearable but when he slowly started applying more pressure I hissed in pain.
"Jesus, Jackson!" He sighs, pulling my gown back down.
"He didn't hit your ribs or anything otherwise important it will just be bruised for a couple of days." I nod my head. "As goes for your neck, it should be back to normal in a few days."
The scared nurse enters, "Carly said I had to remove the glass from Annabeth..."
"Of course." He nods at her, turning to me he says, "While she does that I'm going to check up on the CT and make sure your available to go next."
"Whatever you say Doc," he nods at us once before leaving us. I turn to her, watching as she sterilizes her hands and brings a tray to the bed.
"Can you lift your gown up a little please." I do. Once again making sure my mentionable was hidden from view. "The glass isn't deep I should removed them easily, you won't need stitches."
The entire time she removes the tiny pieces of glass I try focusing on something either than the pain. Afterward she does the few on my arms, she then cleans all my open cuts. When she got to my ankle, she applied pressure onto it with a cloth. After a few minutes of waiting I grow curious and not to mention impatient. "What are you doing?" Her eyes not once leaves the wall clock in my room.
"We have to wait, to see if the bleeding continues. If it doesn't then we're set."
I cross my arms. "And if it does?"
"You need stitches." That certainly got my attention. Together we watch the clock, I was shocked to see it was already nine thirty six. When I went to Nathan's it was around five.
When fifteen minutes had passed she slowly removes the cloth. It stopped bleeding. I sigh in relief as she places another cloth, taping it down just in case it does bleed and I do need those stitches. She hurriedly puts everything away and leaves, leaving me alone at last.
I can only imagine what rumors were already being spreading about me. If there's one thing this town knows to do is spread gossip. It was probably along the lines of, 'Annabeth takes her victim to the hospital after almost killing him.' Or my favorite, 'the crazy bitch strikes again.'
I sigh, slowly I step on the cold floor with my bare feet and shuffle my way into the bathroom. Closing the door once I entered. I couldn't look as bad as they make it out to be. But I was, when I turned the light on I stared at the girl in the mirror.
Her left eye was almost completely swollen, hair destroyed with tangles of knots and dirt, her neck had finger print shaped bruises, a tiny bandage on the right of her neck where the knife made the smallest cut that apparently won't scar, a few scratches and cuts on her arms and legs. She lifts her gown up, the bruises on her stomach covering her entire side.
"Annabeth!" I tug the gown back down and walk out of the restroom. "Dad?" There he is, standing in the hospital room, it felt like I was in a parallel universe because here he was. He was out in public finally out of the house after years.
"Annabeth," he rushes forward, pulling me to him, holding me. I flinch, the pain lacing with some unwelcoming feelings of emotions. I felt my heartbreak, physically and emotionally break because I was doing this to him once again.
"Mr. Montegomery," my dad lets go of me, turning to the sound of the voice, "we need you to sign a few things, Annabeth is about to be taken to get a CT scan..."
"A CT scan? Why? What happened? Is Annabeth okay?" I lay my hand on his arm. "I'm okay."
Carly walks over to me, she gently puts her hand on my back, guiding me back to bed. "You need to stay in bed," I carefully lay down, Carly and my dad pulling up the sheets so I could be more comfortable.
"I'm not leaving her," she nods understanding.
"I'll go bring the papers then." When she walks out my dad begins pacing, I had no idea how he was here. I could barely stand being here, I can only imagine what he was feeling.
"I don't understand, what in the hell happened? You were supposed to be with Nathan!"
"Annabeth! Oh my god!" Lily bursts into the room. "Family members only!" The scared nurse rushes in after Lily frantically.
"Oh screw you I am family!" She waves the nurses hands away when she tried reaching for her.
I smile at the nurse sympathetically. Hell when Lily wanted to she could get rough. "It's fine she can be here." Lily glares at the nurse before rushing to my side and grasping onto my hand.
"How are you? Are you okay? Do you need anything? Water? Don't you need those IV thingies?" She turns to the nurse. "Hey get her that IV thingy!"
"Lily! Like I told my dad I'm fine now." Carly comes back in, handing my dad the paperwork and telling him where to sign.
"Mr. Montegomery, hello it's nice to see you again, although unfortunate for the circumstances." Jackson shakes hands with my dad.
"Is Annabeth going to be alright?" Carly hands Jackson the paperwork, he quickly flips over the pages before shaking his head.
"Yes we just have to do a CT scan to make sure everything is fine." Scared nurse and Carly go on either side of the bed. "We will be taking Annabeth now. It won't take long."
"We're going with her." Jackson exchanges glances with both the nurses and I. "Okay."
__
After the CT scan I was returned back to the room with Lily and my dad. My dad was losing it, I can tell that he was trying to keep it together but it wasn't working. He kept pacing the entire room and whenever he would actually sit down he would have to stand back up every two minutes.
Lily was about the same but for different reasons. She was just trying to make sense of it all. Muttering to herself as she bounces her leg. I had yet to tell them what had actually happened since I didn't get the chance to.
We were all just waiting for news when the cops came knocking on my door. "Officer Reynolds, Henry..." I nod at them.
"Annabeth what kind of trouble did you get yourself into now." Reynolds, the tall, slim one of the two with a good amount of hair on top of his head and face. His mustache always bothered me, besides being the typical cliche cop description, it always seemed like a hairy caterpillar on his upper lip. He only really kept it because no one else on the force had it.
His partner, officer Henry was the opposite of Reynolds. He was on the short side, chunky, and had no hair on either his face of top of his head. But I liked him, he was the nicest one of the two, and actually the nicest one on the force at all so I couldn't bare make fun of him without feeling bad.
They both look towards my dad and nod their heads at him in acknowledgment. My dad used to work with these guys for years and now they were practically strangers. "Just the usual. You know reeking havoc everywhere I go."
Reynolds crosses his arms. "Reeking havoc? Is that what you call Earl bleeding out on the hospital floor?"
Henry walks further into the room, "If it's okay we would like to have a few words with your daughter involving tonight."
"No I want to be here." He sighs.
"I know but it may not be in the best interest of the investigation. We want to be able to get the full details of tonight without Annabeth feeling embarrassed or..."
"I know the protocol but in case you didn't realize she's still a minor so I'm legally allowed to be here while you question her so I'm not leaving."
"Yeah I'm fine. I'm going to tell them what happened anyways and you can believe that I won't leave anything behind."
Reynolds and Henry stare at each other silently communicating as always before nodding.
I tell them everything, I didn't elaborate on the hag from hell and jackass situation although Lily had to tell them who she was. Lily got the point that Nathan and I were no longer together and never really were. My dad did too but all he did was really blame and hate Nathan. Which I more than happily agreed with. Not the blaming part but the hating most definitely.
They all had to be extra quiet to listen. My throat still killed me whenever I spoke so in between sentences I would have to take a sip of water. When I finished they all watched me silently. "You mean to tell me that you overpowered an ex military soldier and instead of leaving him you brought him all the way to the hospital... by yourself?"
I nod my head, "He was drunk so you can't give me much credit."
"Annabeth that's amazing." Henry shakes his head dumbfounded. Seriously I stabbed him and I get called amazing? Apparently I can get away with quite literally anything in this town, self defense or not.
"Okay thank you for your time. We'll keep in touch soon we have to wait until Earl wakes up."
"Wakes up?" Reynolds nods his head.
"He lost a lot of blood but he'll be fine. The question is do you want to press charges?"
"Yes!" Both my dad and Lily, yell. He ignores them both though, instead waiting for my answer. I slowly nod my head yes. He was always drunk and who knew if he would do it again. Besides I would hate to see him again after tonight.
They bid us a goodnight, leaving us alone... Or so I thought. "Annabeth!" In the few seconds it took for Nathan to rush to my side it took half the time for my dad to block him.
"Get away from my daughter! You caused this! You did this to her and now she's here again! I swear..." Lily rushes forward, wedging herself between the two before my dad could punch the living daylights out of Nathan.
She pushes my dad back, "You don't want to do that in front of Annabeth." Shaking in anger he sits in the chair. Staring at Nathan with pure hatred.
Nathan tries again, coming to my side but Lily was on him before he could even try to get a word in. Lily smacks him so hard that the slapped actually echoed. "You mother fucking asshole! Fuck you! Get the hell out of here! Why are you even here? Wanted to see the pain you caused you sick freak? Hmm?" She shoves him back.
I stare at Lily shocked. I turn to my dad, noticing that he shared the same shocked expression as I did. "Lily stop!" My voice cracks from trying to yell out to her. She stops, staring at me fuming. "Go sit down." She bites her lip, staring at Nathan and glares at him. "Your lucky your not dead already."
She shoulders past him, walking to the chair beside my dad. I stare at her dumbfounded. I can't believe my innocent little Lily just did all that. She actually threatened him too!
Nathan takes a step forward but I glare at him. "Don't come any closer." He stays rooted to the spot. "Whatever you have to say you can say in front of my dad and Lily."
He watches them warily with one black eye from when I had punched him that seemed to twitch slightly. I smile to myself happy that I left my mark on him. "Look Annabeth I had no idea you were coming,"
"No shit." Lily grumbles. He ignores her comment, "I had no clue. Just like I had no clue that Maddison was in my room. I was taking a shower and when I came back that's when I saw the both of you! I tried explaining that to you but you wouldn't let me!"
"Is that when she gave you that black eye?" "Should have done more than that." I sigh.
"Never mind let me talk to Nathan alone you two." They begin protesting but I merely crossed my arms, waiting for them to leave. They both get up, heading out the door grudgingly.
"Annabeth I don't even know how she knows my address! Let alone how she knew that, that was my room. She set everything up, I don't know how or why yet but she did! I wouldn't do anything to hurt you. I love you Annabeth, you have to believe me and I know it's hard..."
"No I believe you." He furrows his brows. "You do?" I nod my head.
"I'm good at reading when people are lying and when they aren't. Your voice cracks when you lie, your a terrible liar, that's why I know what your saying is the truth." He smiles in relief, rushing towards me. I hold my hand out to him, stopping him from kissing me. "Hold on a minute just because I know your not lying about the whole Maddison thing doesn't mean that we're back together."
He stops dead in his tracks, "What?" I sigh, there wasn't anything stopping us from getting together but at the same time there was. "I just think it would be in our best interest if we stayed broken up."
"I don't understand-"
"I'll keep an open mind about getting back together if that makes you feel any better but with everything that's going on? I mean being back in this place?" I shake my head. "I just can't right now. And to be honest I don't think I was ready to be in a relationship in the first place... Just give me some time okay?"
He nods his head. "Besides when you said that she must have set it all up and how you had no idea how she knew where you lived and where your room was. Only one thing was clear. She wasn't the only master mind behind the incident."
"But who would do that? I don't-"
"It had to be Mark. He's been to your place he could have easily texted her. She wanted us to break up and she's not the only one who wants that. It's obvious that they knew I would go to visit you after you went away. It was just a matter of time that they would pull something off their asses."
"But why would Mark do that? He wouldn't..."
"Do that to you? Trust me you don't know Mark like I do." It was true. If he did know he wouldn't be wasting his breath trying to defend him.
"And how well do you know him? You talk about how you know all this stuff about him, been to his house... But you've never actually talked about it. What makes you so sure he would do such a thing like this?"
"Just wait till he hears about what's happened to me tonight. Believe me he'll be here squealing like a pig trying to beg for forgiveness."
"What happened?" Giving him the gist of it because I didn't want to go over the whole thing once again, and not to mention my throat ached... I left him speechless. Holding onto my hand hard, whispering to me about how he was sorry. "It's not your fault, Nathan. You were just framed."
"Annabeth, we have your results right here." Doc says. My dad and Lily both rush to my side, eyeing Nathan warily. "You have a mild head injury, it's nothing too serious. You well have a headache for a bit longer and have sensitivity on the back of the head but otherwise you'll be fine. You were lucky enough that you weren't hit more roughly or it could have been very fatal."
"So she's going to be fine? Nothing's wrong with her?"
"No, she's going to be alright." Everyone sags in relief but I didn't care. "That's cool and all but how long do I have to stay here doc?"
He clears his throat, adjusting himself so he was standing taller and firm. I don't know why it's not like I could do anything even if I wanted to.
"Just for a few days, we want to keep you monitored in case changing occurs. For example if you feel nauseated, vomiting..."
"In that case," I turn my head to the side, "I need my sharpie."
