Chapter 10
Today was our one month anniversary. Nathan had planned out this day all by himself... well with the help of Lily of course.
She had went to my house earlier that day and picked out this outfit she had deemed 'appropriate yet hot.' She wouldn't tell me what was going on because she didn't even know what was going on herself. She said all she was told to do was pick out an outfit that I would wear and to make it a tad bit more formal.
After I had finished changing she curled my hair and helped me with my makeup then, boom she was out the door in no time telling me how I better call her later to tell her all the juicy details. A little after she left Nathan had arrived at my house with yet again more flowers.
So now here I was, sitting in Nathan's car as he drove to some destination I had not one clue about. I do know however that he was nervous.
I could tell by the way he always fidgets around until the feeling has passed. Today he seemed to be seriously and I do mean seriously, nervous.
We stopped at some house I had never seen before in my entire life. It was a white shaded, big house with pillars on each side connecting the floor to the second story, that also had another set of pillars that connected the floors to the roof. The trees and plants looked so beautiful, freshly trimmed and aligned perfectly, the grass was even this fine shade of green. There were french doors on the top floor where it opened up to the balcony. The house looked beautiful yet expensive.
It was surrounded by other expensive looking type of houses as well. The neighborhood just was not the neighborhood I grew up in. I mean my house is nice and it is kind of big but not as big as these houses. Not to mention the neighborhood was quiet and screamed high class, while my neighborhood was quiet yet was an average kind of suburban neighborhood. In other words, I had no clue why we were here.
We got out of the car and walked up the steps to the house and stopped at the door when Nathan finally turned to me, grabbing both of my hands he looked at me square in the eyes. "Look by now you should know how serious I am about you and how serious this relationship is, even in the short time we have been together. But there is one thing I need to do- one thing that will prove to you how serious and committed I am to this relationship." I nod cautiously, where was he going with this? He let's go of my right hand and opens the door to the house where voices are heard echoing down the halls. "That is..."
"Nathan honey is that you?" An older females voice asks from somewhere inside the house.
"Yes mom it's me!" He yells back, never breaking eye contact with me, he tugs me inside the house with him. "Meet my parents."
His parents? Excuse me but what? No I don't think I hear that right... He hasn't even mentioned them all that much and now he brings me here at his house, shoving me through the front door- okay not exactly shoving but more like guiding me in but still! I should have brought something for them. Hell I should have worn something better! I'm wearing a crop top! I hurry up and zip up my leather jacket half-way, enough to cover my stomach, then quickly hold Nathan's hand again. My anxiety is through the roof now. Is it just me or does the floor suddenly look so comfortable?
The voices get louder as we near around the corner and suddenly we had entered what looks to be the living room. The couches were white, which was probably such a killer to keep clean, there was also such beautiful paintings hung up on the walls, and there was a huge flat screen tv in the center of the left wall.
The conversations in the room had all at once stopped as soon as we entered and everyone in the room was now gaping at us.
"Hey uh I hope you guys don't mind I brought my girlfriend over for dinner." They gape some more. I look at Nathan and scowl at him. So this wasn't just a surprise for me but also his family too! Great.
Suddenly someone stands up which I'm assuming is his mother since she seems older than the other girl in the room, and walks over to us. "Hello I'm Nathan's mother, Julie. It's very, very nice to meet you."
"Hello Mrs. Morgan, I'm Annabeth Montegomery, its very nice to meet you. I'm sorry for imposing like this but I wasn't aware I was coming to meet you." I say shyly, shaking her hand.
"Oh please you're not imposing at all! The more the merrier!" She says brightly. I look around the living room.
"It's a very lovely home you have." She smiles.
"Why thank you!" She turns around and looks at the other people in the room. There was two other men sitting in the couch and a women as well. "Well come on and introduce yourselves don't just sit there and gawk."
They all shake their dumbfounded looks on their faces and rise from the sofa and walk up to us. The girl was the first one to reach us, she looked like she was in her early 20's. As soon as she reached us she threw her arms around me engulfing me in a hug. Oh no, I don't do good with human contact. I look at Nathan and he rolls his eyes playfully. She pulls back and looks at me from head to toe.
"I can't believe my little brother actually scor-"
"Ah zip it! You're embarrassing him!" The guy interrupts. He looked like he was in his mid 20's and boy was he hot! I mean... He was decent looking. He looked like Nathan but older... and buffer.
"Excuse my sister she gets a little excited sometimes." He scolds her which she chose to roll her eyes at. "I'm Christian, the oldest, and the girl that was just squeezing the life out of you is Rebecca."
"Hi it's nice to meet you both." I mumble. God he has a nice voice. Is it getting hot in here?
"And I'm their proud dad, Alexander. It's nice to finally meet the girl that captured our little Nathan's heart." I hear Nathan groan behind me and see him cover his face, I laugh. Good I hope he's embarrassed. Serves him right.
"Well why don't you all keep Annabeth here company while I'll get dinner started. Come on Rebecca." They disappear between the double doors, leaving me with the guys.
"Well why don't we sit down and get to know eachother, huh?" Nathan's dad says walking to the couch. We all oblige and sit as well, Nathan making sure he's seated by me. Suddenly a phone rings, Nathan's dad grabs a phone out of his pocket and looks down at it, sighing. "I'm sorry I have to take this, business calls." He get up and disappears somewhere in the house leaving Nathan, Christian, and I alone.
"So Annabeth is it? Pretty name for such a pretty girl. So what are you doing with my brother? How did someone like him get so lucky in getting someone as beautiful as you." Christian smiles.
"He was himself." I say simply. I feel Nathan scoot closer to me and wrap his arm around me.
"Wow I thought maybe he would have bribed you into coming with him or should I say going out with him. Huh. Guess not." I feel Nathan getting angry at his brother and I don't really know what to do, so I stand up and slowly walk away from this situation.
"Uh I think I'm going to see if they need any help." I give a tight smile and turn around and hurry into the kitchen where I interrupt Nathan's mom and sister laughing.
"Oh is something wrong dear?" Nathan's mom asks.
"No I just wanted to see if you needed any help is all." I smile. They both look at each other and give a look. Oh god. What did I do?
"No it's fine you just relax." Nathan's mom smiles. I nod slowly not really sure what to do. We all stand there for a minute silent and I can literally almost here the ticking of the clock hung on the wall.
"Can I use your washroom?"
"Yeah. It's down the hall right here, just take a left and it should be the second door in the right." Rebecca chimes in. I nod and hurriedly exit the room.
"I like her, she's nice." I stop. The doors had already swinged shut but I could still hear them. I dont want to eaves drop into the conversation but they are talking about me so I'm like obligated to, right?
"Mhm and pretty too!" Rebecca says.
Pretty? What does that supposed to mean?
I don't bother going to the restroom but rather go back to where Nathan is. It's not like I actually needed to go to the restroom I just needed an excuse to get out of that room. The silence was just unnerving.
"Where's you're brother?" I ask as I sit down next to him.
"He had a business call." I nod.
"So everyone seemed surprised to see me." I glance at him suspiciously.
"Yeah I-uh didn't exactly tell them that I was bringing you..."
"Yeah I kind of got that feeling. I guess it was a surprise for all of us." He smiles at me innocently.
Nathan's mom enters the living room, rushing us into the kitchen for dinner. Inside everyone was already seated in the kitchen table, the food placed neatly on each plate. There was only three chairs open and Nathan's mom insisted that I seat next to Nathan at the table.
It was all a bit awkward at first. Everyone kept looking at each other and smiled suspiciously as they glanced towards Nathan and I.
"So what did you say you're name was again dear?" Nathan's mom asks.
"Annabeth Montegomery." They're eyes widen.
"Annabeth? As in thee Annabeth?" Nathan's dad asks.
"Yes sir." I drink my soda. "I'm guessing you all heard the stories?" In the corner of my eye I see Nathan's ears chirp up as he glances towards me.
"I've heard talk... Not much... I don't know what's real or not real that is... I mean I wouldn't really know. People seem to have a difference in opinion about-" she abruptly stops. There was a few minutes of awkward silence.
"So are you really my brothers girlfriend?" Rebecca asks.
"Yes."
"You're the first girl he's ever brought home you know." She sips her wine smiling. I glance at Nathan and see him scowling at his sister.
"Not true!" She sets down her wine.
"Oh yes it is! You're the first girl he has ever brought home to meet us! All he ever brings home is guys! Even when he was little. To be quiet frank, we all thought he was gay." Everyone gasps. A giggle forms in my throat and I can't contain it as I burst out laughing.
"Rebecca!" Nathan's mom scolds at her then turns to me. "Well it's already out there anyways no use in denying it, we did think so but here you are! A young lady my son brought home to me! Oh and the way he just looks at you- oh!" She clasps her hands looking at us both wistfully. "Oh this is just fantastic! I could tell you're going to be the first and only girl he brings home! Oh my son is actually in-"
"Mother please." Nathan buries his face in his hands. I could see his ears are tinged red, the way they always do when he's embarrased or shy. "No more please. You do want her to come back don't you?"
"Oh why yes of course! Please darling come anytime! It's a pleasure to have you!" I smile.
Nathan's family was nice. After we all got over the awkwardness of dinner we went to the living room where there was games to be played! We played charades which was pretty funny since everyone was pretty terrible at it. Then moved on to movie charades where we would draw movie scenes, etc, on a white board. It was guys vs girls since we had an even number of boys and girls. Obviously the girls won.
So since the guys lost they had to give a performance to us that we chose out for them. They had to come up with dance moves for Milkshakes by Kelis. Which in one point they all shaked their 'goods' in front of us and turned all at once. Nathan dad had lost his balance and grabbed on to Christian who in turn reached out to poor Nathan who fell down! Oh and Christian fell on top of him! Nathan's dad stayed standing and gave us a big smile and finished off with jazz hands. They didn't do the entire song only a little part of the song but boy was that the most hilarious thing we had ever saw!
After that we all talked for a bit until it was late and Nathan and I decided it was time I went home to my dad that was probably waiting at home watching tv. So here we all were now, saying our goodbyes.
"Oh you just have to come again for family game night! It will be a blast!" Rebecca hugs me. She's a hugger I noticed. I hug her back. Then soon I'm being passed to everyone who is already making plans for the next time we see eachother.
"Oh us gals can go shopping and get our nails done!" Rebecca's whines on. They all seem to be excited.
Wow! People stayed more than an hour with me and actually want me to come back! This is weird! But a nice kind of weird!
I hugged Julie last but she suddenly holds me at arms length. "I hope you had a wonderful time here sweetheart-" I tense up, hoping no one notices. "Just know you'll always be welcomed here."
I smile stiffly. "Thank you." She nods and hugs me goodbye for the last time. At least she didn't notice.
I let go of Julie and start walking down the steps to Nathan's jeep. "It was nice meeting you all! Goodnight!"
"Oh Nathan! Honey! Make sure you bring our future daughter-in-law safely home!" I burst out laughing suddenly not feeling stiff as a board anymore.
Julie I learned is someone who always says what's on her mind. Now I know where Rebecca gets it from. Well actually all of Julie's kids...
"Mom! I thought you wanted her to come back!" He grumbles. He opens the car door for me and I get in happily.
I've never felt like this. Not in a long time. Actually feeling like I was a part of a family again. It's a strange yet happy feeling bubbling inside of me. It's weird. I don't know why it's just ever since Nathan came along I'm just... Happy. And been a lot nicer.
"What are you thinking about?" Nathan asks smiling at me turning on the engine.
"I like you're family."
"Yeah will my family likes you too. Hell my brother does way more than he was supposed to." He laughs.
"What no!"
"Uh yes! He flirted with you!"
"No he did not! When?"
"Uh he checked you out when you first arrived and he didn't have to hug you for that long when we were leaving. Oh and when we were singing he was looking at you!" I burst out laughing.
"Oh yeah cause singing to me 'my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard' is so romantic!" I laugh, rolling my eyes. He looks at me serious but then the corners of his mouth goes up and soon he's laughing with me.
"No but I'm serious. I had a great time tonight. Thank you for bringing me."
"Anytime." He smiles.
"So... Am I really the only girl you ever brought home?" I ask a little curious.
"Uh-" he coughs, "yeah. You are. You're actually my first girlfriend. Ever."
"What? But what about hag from hell- I mean Maddie." I correct myself. He lifts his brow glancing at me for a second before glancing back at the road.
"Hag from hell, huh?" He laughs. "No we were never really serious. It was just a stupid thing we had. I never took her on dates, I never introduced her to my parents, I didn't hang out with her at lunch, although she tried. I did hang out with her outside of school a few times but we did nothing more than kiss. She thought I was like her property or something so she kept going up to other girls saying I was her boyfriend. I confronted her about it and she didn't deny anything. I said I was sorry she thought that way but I certainly didn't have the same feelings as she did obviously, I only thought of her as an acquaintance per say."
"Well shit." I laughed. "So is that how it's like for you then? You don't date?" I ask.
"I never did."
"So what makes me so different?" He glances at me.
"Well I think that's a bit obvious don't you think?" He asks, looking at me like I know the answer. I shrug my shoulders.
"It's because you are different. The first time I laid eyes on you, I just knew... You are different Annabeth. No one can describe you. You're special, funny, outgoing, sarcastic, beautiful..." He trails off. "You changed the way I thought. I'm not saying I was a player and I was rude or obnoxious. No I was polite and I never brought feelings into whatever I had with girls and I never tried to lead them on and think different of what I actually felt, which was nothing. I stated the truth the entire time. But once I saw you I was hooked." He glances at me again, reaching me with one hand, locking his fingers with mine. "And I'm pretty sure you knew that, too."
