Looking For the Day
We're looking for the day
Where the words:
Land of the free
Home of the brave
Take on their meaning
Right now they serve no purpose
Just a phrase we say
But what significance does it hold?
That people of our own have to fight to be heard?
That their lives aren't a basic human right?
"Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
We're looking for the day
When people realize the honest truth
Flowers and sunsets are pretty because of their colors
So many striking and vibrant pigments
Then why isn't humanity the same?
When will people understand that the amount of melanin in your skin-
Doesn't make you any more or less human
"We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal."
We're looking for the day
When we will all join hands
And celebrate our differences
All of us
No matter the ethnicity
The race
The color
We were all made as people
And as such everyone should be treated
Why should we slaughter our own?
When they have done nothing to us
"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter."
We're looking for the day
That seems like a distant dream
Something that will never come true
But I tell you today
My brothers
My sisters
Do not lose hope yet
There is still a light ahead
Keep walking sure and steady
You will get there
Do what you can to build others up
To help them on their journey
Do nothing to hold them back
No matter how desperate
How fruitless
Your efforts may seem
They do something
So I tell you
Every last one of you
Keep looking for the day

A/N: I originally wrote this for my Black Lives Matter resource compilation and I hope that here it can still get the same message across. This is an incredibly important movement.
I feel like we sometimes get caught up in everything that we can't do and we lose sight of what we can do. If everyone said: "I'm not going to make a big difference so I'm not going to do anything at all", imagine where the world would be. It takes ordinary people doing whatever they can to make a difference. Once one person sees you trying to make a difference, then they'll try to make one, then the next person, then the next, and so on until we're really changing the world.
I challenge you all to try to make a small difference this week, whenever you read this, just in your community. I would love to hear about things you have all done to help change this world for the better.
"Change starts with you."
Love,
Sunny
