Five
The chiming ringtone of her cell phone woke her the next morning.
Thank goodness the twins were sleeping late, she thought, eyeing the time. 8 a.m. A miracle. "Hello," she said.
"Hi there! This is Darby Blossom calling from WKFG 99.1. Is this Kayla Morrison?"
"Um, yeah."
"Great! You aren't on the air, by the way."
"Good." Kayla sat up, clutching the covers to her chest as if Darby could see her on the radio through the phone. The stretched-out but soft tee shirt she wore as a nightgown had seen much better days...ten years ago.
"I have some fantastic news. The other contestant from Thursday's Battle of the Sexes called us this morning and said he is unable to attend the concert tonight after all. We'd like to offer you the ticket instead. Are you interested?"
Kayla's eyes popped open wide. "Yes! Omigod, yes, for sure!"
She listened as Darby gave her the information, thanked the radio host, and ended the call. Next she called her mother, hoping against hope that she'd be available to babysit.
"Mom? Can you take the kids tonight by any chance?" She explained what had happened and looked up at the ceiling as if in prayer to a god she didn't even believe in. Maybe the universe would understand. Or yin/yang energy. Or whatever it was that may or may not be out there making the stars and planets align so that she could have this one perfect night out. Could be Greek goddesses for all she cared as long as someone was listening.
"Um, yeah. I think so." Her mother sounded a little startled, but soon recovered. " Of course, I can. Do you want me to just stay over at your house? Wouldn't that be easier? I don't mind. You go out and have fun. That way you can stay out as late as you want." She even sounded a little choked up when she said, "You deserve it, honey."
Kayla let out a breath she hadn't known she was holding. "I do deserve it. Thank you, Mom. I owe you one."
She danced around the room for a bit, playing the latest Country Fire album on her phone. Then she danced over to her small bedroom closet to choose her outfit for the evening. A limo was coming at 7 p.m. She'd be in the city in time for a pre-concert drink and appetizer party with the radio personalities and then she'd be escorted to her front-row seat. Best of all, she'd get to meet the band after the show!
She looked down at her legs and feet. This night called for a wax and a pedicure. She rummaged under the bathroom sink. Could the roll-on Brazilian wax go bad, she wondered? She squinted at the directions. Guess she'd find out.
Just then, she heard the twins babbling to each other in their room. At almost three years old, they should be verbalizing more clearly, but they mostly spoke in their otherworldly twin language. She'd mentioned her fears to the pediatrician who'd said not to worry. Another mom in the twins group said her boys had been late talkers. Still, it was hard not to be concerned.
She shook her head. She wasn't going to think about that today.
Today was a good day.
A really good day.
