Chapter 18-A Dance To Forget

"Tonight," I said, "I promise. As long as you don't tell anyone else. This means Ava and the others, and especially my Dad's."

"I promise," He said silently as he leaned down, slowly, to reach my height.

Oh.

MY.

WORD!

My body stiffened as I felt his warm body press against mine. This warmth... this is what I felt at Tommy's. It was Pierce... I relaxed, just barely and pulled my arms around his shoulders, having to steady myself so we wouldn't fall over. Pierce pulled away and stood up straight, my hands resting on his upper arms as I peered up and smiled sheepishly to him. He blushed too like that was new to him. Do they not-maybe it is just like the stories...

"Ya know," I said with a less nervous smile and a kind voice, "You're really good at giving hugs." I skipped off the front and down the aisle. "You should do them more often." You promised. Don't forget that.

The day went on smoothly after that, Rhys and Ava showed up, a few burnt marks on Rhy's suit but nothing I couldn't fix up at the sideline. I hadn't told Ava that Pierce hugged me, or about the promise I made to him. I basically, didn't really talk to them, Anna Maria was with her bridesmaids getting ready, and Tommy was running around with his groomsmen. Dork. It wasn't until late in the night, just before the wedding when he found me again.

"TRIS!" He called as I was finishing up at the altar. I had to have a quick chat with Anna Maria's Father, who was performing the ceremony. Apparently he didn't even know I was Tommy's sister! Anna Maria probably doesn't either! I turned and headed down the steps to meet Tommy.

"Tommy," I said a bit alarmed, "The ceremony's in ten minutes, you should be finalizing your vows. Getting ready! Making sure Alec didn't bleach his suit!"

"That can wait," He said out of breath, "I needed you. I-I needed you to wear this." He hunched over, digging in his chest for a breath or two as he lifted up what he held in his hands. My old fighting jacket.

"T-Tommy I-" I stared at it, "Where did you get that from?" I pushed it down and pulled him away from Anna Maria's Father. None of them know about our past in the fight club... yet.

"The promise," He said and stood tall, "We promised each other, whenever we were getting married if we were still friends, that we would, wear these. Wear our marks. I went and dug up the box, and I thought this would look better with your jacket then the neon blue hair." He let out a laugh and I couldn't help but do the same. He stood behind me and slipped the jacket on me.

I turned to face him and saw that he was about as close to me as Pierce was before our hug. My face flushed as he bent down slowly and pulled me in tight. I could feel him breathing heavy enough to where he was crying, and I hugged him tighter.

"I love you," He cried softly into my ear, "Always will. Always have." It was clear to me what I had to do, and that was something I refused to do. But in baby steps maybe. I pulled away, wiped away his tears, stood tall. Smiled.

"I love you to Brother," I said with a friendly punch in the arm. Brother. That's all it could be now.

We went our separate ways after that, and the ceremony was beautiful. Perfect. I wore the jacket, just like he asked, and I stood right by him as his Best Woman. The only thing that happened, Pop cried too loudly, and he jumbled his vows. The jumble was cute.

The dinner and dancing portion came along and we were up at the cliff, close to midnight as I laughed along at the table with Dad, Pop, Pierce, Rhys, and Ava. Then, my toast had to come. So soon. You've got this...

"Excuse me?" I said as I stood, tapping my glass with my fork. Everyone looked at me. I swallowed hard and let out a soft breath. Just look at one person. Tommy. The girls. Ava? Dad? Pop? UGH! ALL OF THEM! "Ever since I have known him. Tommy has been this... light, at the end of the tunnel. We grew up in the same situation, and for the longest time, we ran up and down these streets, only having each other. He's a brother, a best friend, and he's the greatest of the great. When I knew him first, he helped me. His imagination was the brightest, and his hope was the strongest. This guy, with our fights in the club for Mr. Monty-" I saw him laughing.

"Old Man Mouthy more like it!" He laughed out, Monty at the table next to me. He laughed with everyone else.

"Even in our fights against each other, he'd have my back," I continued, "When people threatened someone there they went through him first, then Monty. He's protective, loving, everything you think when you look at him. Anna Maria-" She looked right at me and my eyes darted off her, to the girls. "They love you, and so do I. You'll be a great sister." I smiled and looked too Monty. "Thanks for keeping both of us in line back in the day, old man. I'm glad I finally got to see him get married! So! This is it, to the new-Mr. and Mrs. Monty-Cross." Everyone applauded as I sat down. Tommy and Anna Maria kissed and the girls looked disgusted by it. I smiled and kept myself in my seat.

Ava went to get more food, Rhys was talking to Mr. Monty, Dad and Pop were dancing, and Pierce. He just sat beside me. Then he slid close next to me.

"You promised," He reminded me. I wasn't ready for this, and he knew that. When I looked up he wasn't even looking at me. He was looking at the people dancing.

"Have you danced before?" I asked, "Or, is that like you with hugging?" He looked at me with a smile.

"I used to dance and hug a lot," He responded, "With my friend. She had blue hair, and was short." I smiled as he went on. "She used to step on my feet, but she'd always make it fun. She tried to dip me once. We fell." I began to chuckle at the story. "Are you, making fun of me?"

"H-Huh?" I asked shocked, "N-No. I just, it's cute." I smiled. "That and I've never heard you talk that much. It's nice." He nodded.

"Do you want to dance?" He asked and my face flushed.

"I haven't danced since I stepped on my best friend's toes," I chuckled a bit more, "I was shorter than him too."

"My friend was very short," He said. I nodded. "That's my nod." I laughed, and he chuckled. It was a warm feeling to see him having fun.

"You aren't as tense as you used to be," I point out, "The first night you sat in the chair with your sword out and your body was tense."

"I trust you," He said, "You are not like Damos." We heard laughing and turned. Ava and Rhys were trying to dance. "Neither is Ava."

"Why do you do that?" I asked and he looked at me confused, "Why do you just call Ava and I by our names? The others say Princess and stuff before that."

"Ava told me she doesn't like that," He said.

"And me?" I played with my glass and peered up to him through the corner of my eye.

"You, remind me too much of my friend," He answered. I smiled and then stood up.

"Why don't I be that friend," I suggested, "But this time. I won't step on your toes." I held out my hand and he sat there staring at it like he didn't know what to do. I smiled but sat back down.

"No one can replace her," He insisted and looked at me, "You still have to tell me, or you dance with me." I nodded as he stood up and held out his hand.

"I haven't danced in years," I said sheepishly and looked away.

"It's okay," He said taking my hand off my lap and standing me up. Even his hand is warm... "You're allowed to step on my toes." I smiled as he lead us out to the dance floor and the music did the rest.

By the end of the night, I was leaning against his chest and smiling as he held me in his arms and we danced. I looked up to him and smiled. He reminds me of Buttercup. He used to be tense and tall too. He smiled back as we kept up the small dance, moving back and forth to the music as I softly said the words.

"Knew I was falling when I looked inside your eyes," I said, "She said, 'I know you are'-"

"'But what am I?'" Pierce finished with me. I smiled and took a step back. Giving him a small bow and heading back to my seat with a smile. Maybe... just maybe...

By the end of the night, I only stepped on his toes like-15 times.

Okay, okay.

Definitely more.
