Chapter Three-Framed Scenery

Nagisa

After I left Karma's room, I did my usual. Talked to all the other patients, checked in with the other nurses and volunteers to make sure there was no problems, restocked rooms, read certain files, and organized papers. The hospital I work at is not like the hospitals in most towns.  We mostly work with illnesses without cures, that no one really knows much about, that came out of no where, or not many people have. There are not many hospitals like us. Which is why we have a lot of patients.  And not normal ones.  People come in with branches growing out of them, animal ears, plain white eyes yet they can still see perfectly, thorns on the tips of their fingers, and so much more things that can't be explained..

So why is Karma here..? And does he know?

We usually try to keep it a secret from the people on the outside.  Make it seem like a rich hospital that very few can enter.  It's better for our patients privacy.  We want them to feel safe and to actually be safe. Usually, when we hear of special cases, like someone with leaves for hair,  we send out a "helper" and they bring them to the hospital to see what we can do for them.

Was Karma brought here freely or forced?

By the way he acted, I don't think he knows fully what happens in this hospital.

Am I supposed to explain it to him? That's not part of my job. Plus, I don't even know him.

What to do..

.  .  .

I was sitting at the nurse's station, a few days after Karma came to the hospital, when I see a familiar red hair male walk pass me to the front door. I was going to stop him, since he's obviously not allowed to just walk out of the hospital, when he suddenly turned around when two people with a few boxes walked in the hospital.  One was a green haired girl and the other was a darker blonde.  All three seem to rush from the front door to the stairs and most likely up to his room.

I was planning to follow after them, to see what was going on and who they were, but I figured that would seem creepy.  So, I sat back down in my chair and waited.

And waited..

And waited..

Until an hour passed and it was finally time for my break.  I quickly stood up and rushed to the elevator. Pushing on the button for floor four, and anxiously waited.  As the elevator neared its stop, I wondered what I was going to say to be able to get into the room..

.  .  .

As I stood in front of the door, I took a deep breathe in before reaching up to knock.

One knock.

Then two.

I took three steps back and pushed up against the wall.  Soon, the blonde from before opened the door just a tiny bit.  She looked at me, blinked, and quickly closed the door.

After a few awkward seconds, the door opened again and out popped Karma. He smiled at me and closed the door behind him.  "Did you need something?" He said with a smug smile.

I shake my head and look down at the ground.  "I was just making sure you brought in family friendly items.  Stuff allowed in the hospital."

Karma shook his head with a small smile.  "You should already know the packages were checked by the security. Everything is safe."

I nodded softly and then turned away.  "Well, be careful with your female friends.  Don't allow them to see the other patients. They shouldn't be seen by outsiders." I quickly walked down the hallway to the elevator.

I could hear him shout down after me, "I don't understand but I'll try to make them leave when no one else is around."

I smile to myself as the elevator doors slide shut.  Seeing Karma still standing there, waving gently goodbye.

.  .  .

I was back on my shift for a few more hours.  It was Wednesday, meaning my shift ended at four.

I was checking a file for a new patient, someone named Aime who had branches growing out of her arms, when someone knocked on the desk.  I quickly looked up to see Karma standing their with his usual smug smile.

"Did you need something?" I said while looking back down at the files.

"I want to show you something," he said while gently tapping on the counter top, "When do you get off?"

I looked up at him, opened my mouth to protest.  To say he was a patient and I was a nurse... But he's not my patient. So nothing was wrong.. Right?

I sigh before looking at him and saying, "Fine. I have one more hour. Then I'm done."

Karma smiled and gently hit the counter, scaring me slightly.  "Okay! Swing by my room when you're done. Just knock first." I nodded as I watched him walk away. Yet again, using the stairs.

How come he doesn't take the elevator?

.  .  .

Once my shift ended, I packed up my small bag and walked slowly to the elevator, pressed floor four, and waited until the elevator stopped.  I sighed as the doors slid open, and tried to keep my excitement hidden.  I shouldn't be excited by this surprised.  He is a patient and I am a nurse.  Nothing more.

I knocked three times on his door, soft and quickly. When I backed up from the door, I could see a blue light streaming out from underneath his door.  That's different..

The door suddenly opened and out came out a smug Karma. "Close your eyes and give me your hand."

"Darling..." I mumbled to myself, closing my eyes and pushing my hand into his.  It was soft.. warm. I kinda didn't hate holding it.

Karma pulled me into his room. I could hear the door being pushed closed behind me. He kept pulling me into the room and I was most likely in the middle when he finally stopped.

"Okay, you can open them," He said while letting go of my hand and taking a few steps away.

I opened my eyes and looked around.  It was.. so.. cute.

He had red blankets with a mix of blue and red pillows.  Plus, a dark red fur carpet right next to the bed.  Must be soft in the morning.  There was a cute little lamp on the window seat with blue lights streaming out.  Plus, scenery hanging on the walls.  Trees, mountains, oceans, stars... Six different framed photos.  Four scenery and two drawings. The room looked amazing.

"Do you like it?" I could hear Karma say from behind.

"It's amazing," I whispered.

"Really?" Karma stepped closer to me. I could feel him standing right next to me. "I'm glad you like  it."

I smile and look around the room. "It needs at least two chairs for visitors.  I'll bring you some tomorrow.  You can decorate it with the red and blue pillows."

"Like anyone would visit," He replied with a shrug.

"What about your friends from earlier?" I said, giving him my best confused look.

"Rio and Kaede? We hardly see each other.  More like business partners than friends," He said, once again, shrugging.

"Well.. I'll visit you when I can," I said with a small smile.

"You can sit on the bed, not on some chairs," He said while winking at me.

I could feel my face warming up as I tried to change the subject. "Are these real places people can visit?" I say while pointing at the pictures.

"Nice subject change,"He said while laughing softly, "Yeah, they are real places.  I've actually been to those places. Which is why I picked the photos. It just reminds me of the fun times I had.  Usually just for business trips, but still.  They were fun."

"Really? You're apart of a business?" I asked curiously.

"I'm actually the CEO of my own business.  I had help from my family, but I was able to open my own business at age nineteen. I'm currently twenty-two." He said with this big goofy grin.

"Wow. How fancy," I said while laughing softly. He looked at me with the softest smile.

I looked away from him and around the room. "Is it okay if I ask why you're here? You should know by now, since it's been a few days since you came, that this isn't a normal hospital."

Karma walked to his bed and sat  down slowly.  He was still smiling. "Would you like to sit? I'll tell you my story."

I slightly nodded and made my way to the bed.  Sitting on the edge and waiting for him to begin. He looked at me, pulled me closer, and took a deep breathe in before beginning his six year story.
