14. FRENCH FRIES please
Harieth
Ever so delicately, I fluttered my eyes open to behold a blurry vision of Christian walking up to me. The sun was bright and peeped its way into the room, radiating his appearance. My vision cleared up and for the first time ever, I watched a small smile curl up his lips. For that moment, I felt stuck, unable to look away from his face and as he drew closer, his smile broadened.
This has to be a dream. My subconscious warned but for the strangest and unknown reason, I liked this dream. I liked this Christian. I liked the fact the smile on his face enhanced his handsomeness. I liked the fact the scenery was beautiful and the fact it felt like every fibre in my body was at peace. Unable to move, I laid there and watched him slightly bend over me, about to whisper into my ear.
“Wake up sleepy head.”
My eyes opened and all it took was a nanosecond for me to discover I was back to the real world. As I sat up on the bed, I ran a hand through my mess of a hair while wondering what that little dream meant. Unable to decipher it right away, I looked around and was able to recall where I was. Just like my dream, it was a sunny morning except Christian was absent and I felt nothing like I had felt in my dream. Drawing in a deep breath and letting it go once again, finally, I made my way down the bed and on my two feet. Lazily, I took each step towards the door, down the hall and then the stairs in search of any sign of him.
I made sure to take a look into every room I walked past and only caught sight of him at the dining table having breakfast. His eyes seeming glued to the newspapers in his hands. Unknowingly, a faint smile surfaced on my face but was quick to disappear as I realised how silly I was being. One night can’t seriously be all it took for him to create a soft spot somewhere within my heart.
He lifted his eyes up and met mine.
“Wake up sleepy head.”
I recalled his words from the dream I had and was forced to instantly look away from him as a strange feeling took over. My brows barely narrowed at my immediate foolishness. I was acting like someone else and not like myself. Whatever this silliness was, it would have to be stopped. What happened was nothing more than an empty dream which will never take place in reality. There, I shift my eyes back to him as I make my way towards him but his sight had returned back to the papers in front of him.
I pulled a seat out and made myself comfortable on it before scanning the dishes laid out on the table. There were lots for a single person which wasn’t the least bit surprising to me. After all, I was used to this lifestyle. In one glance, I took notice of his attire. He was clearly dressed for work and the only thing he didn’t have on was his jacket. I also noticed he barely touched his food.
“Why bother sitting at the table if you’re not going to have breakfast,” I stated whilst looking away from him and helping myself to a slice of bread.
Neither did he utter a word in reply to my statement nor display the least reaction possible. Slightly, it angered me and just when I was at the verge of speaking up once more, he folded the paper into two as he got up on his two feet and picked up his jacket he hung over his chair. Two steps to my side, he placed the paper on the table in front of me. Although his presence by my side made me a little uncomfortable, I performed quite a good job at hiding that fact.
“The next time you step into my room, I won’t take it lightly with you.” He threatened before he was on his way out of the dining hall and I was left in solitary.
I could recall the last night and could also recall vividly, the dream I had. Not much added up and the fact I was starting to feel confined within an unexplainable feeling pissed me off the most. I stared down at the newspaper and my brows slightly arched at our wedding picture from the previous day displayed on the front cover and our topic hijacked the headlines. Dressed in the traditional white, I had smiled my best while my arms clenched onto the arm of my husband. A snort escaped my lips as I looked away from the image for a moment. One look and one would think we were truly in love. Hilarious.
After gulping down some juice, I stood back on my feet and found my way out of the dining hall. I had my bathe and changed into something better before I began my adventure of finding out where my dear husband left my suitcase. After asking the maids a few questions, I was able to find out where he left them and with the help of two male workers, I was able to get them all into my room. My hands akimbo on my waist, now staring at them all, I hate to admit Christian was a tad right. They were much but to me, they were much in a good way. I needed every little bit of my stuff. They were useful to me even though most still had their tags on.
Barely done and quite exhausted, I decided to stroll around but found myself walking into Christian’s room.
“The next time you step into my room, I won’t take it lightly with you.”
I recalled Christian’s last words before he left for work. A snort eluded my lips once more. He thought he could threaten me and I would cower in fear. Truly, this man knows nothing about me.
Walking further in, I realised the bed we laid on had been dressed as well as the room, tidied up by one of the maids. When? I had no idea but she did a good job. Glancing at almost every little detail of the room, I brushed my fingers through the curtains before making my way towards his walk-in closet. Once I opened the doors into the closet, my eyes widened a bit at the unexpected. He spoke so much about me having a bit too much stuff but he was more than I expected. Several patterns and strips of the shirt hung at one side. His shoes arranged in a different compartment so did his ties and accessories. He was quite organised. I clearly remembered how it took a professional to get my closet this organised. Okay, one fact noted, he was an organised fellow and his fashion sense didn’t suck much.
I brushed my fingers through his shirts as I walked past them. Eventually, I stopped in front of one and found myself bringing the shirt close to my nose for a sniff.
“Smells nice.” I had to admit before subconsciously slapping myself regarding my present action. Immediately, I let go of it and made my way to the table several colognes and perfumes laid on. I could recognise most of the designer products for men. Okay, so he knows what’s topping. Impressive. A small smile surfaced on my face and grew even broader when I picked one up and inhaled the scent. This particular scent reminded me of when we danced together at our wedding reception. At this moment, I could barely remember the fact that moment on the dance floor was spent threatening each other, all I could see was his hands on my waist and mine around his neck.
I drew in a deep breath as I returned the perfume back to its place. Truly, I was starting to thread on fire and if not careful, I could get burnt anytime soon.
“Get your acts together Harieth.” I cautioned myself through loud exhale before hastening my pace out of the closet then shut the door behind me. I made my way out of the room without taking one last look back.
Christian
“Christian you shouldn’t be here. Your wedding was yesterday.” Lucas stated once we were alone in the conference hall and I was at the verge of taking my leave as well.
“I have to. There’s a lot to do.” I added before attempting to walk away but Lucas quickly took hold of my arm causing me to draw to a halt and forced to finally look up to him.
“I’m sorry…”
“There’s nothing to apologise for.” I quickly interrupted. I saw how sympathetic Lucas stared at me all morning and truthfully, I hated it. I made a decision and I was going to stand by it. Gently, I shrugged my arm from his hold.
“I’m doing fine. You can stop staring at me the way you do.” I added before walking away, not stealing one last glance at him. Deep down, I know Lucas meant well and the fact he feels my life is messed up because of him. Also, I understand the urge and need to help rectify everything but somehow he has to understand. He has to understand that only I can help myself.

A sip of my favourite drink was all it took to calm my insides and I was back to staring at passers-by through the large cylindrical sunglasses I had on while seated under one of the canopies set up outside the shop. Most of my time spent here had been with the girls but for some good reasons today, I just felt the need to be alone. Plus, meeting the girls would result in several questions which would eventually lead to lying and uncomfortableness on my path. Not something I was quite aiming at getting involved with.
As I look away from the present direction my eyes had been focused on and unto another direction, I sight a familiar face walking up to me. My brows slenderly cease up as I realised exactly who this person was. I look away from his direction and only turned back to him when I heard the sound of him pulling out a chair before having his seat.
“What are you doing here?” I question right away whilst not putting up a caring expression. A sly smile surface at the corner of his lips for a second before it was gone.
“Is that all you can say to your ex after breaking up with him through a text message and getting married to someone else in less than a week after the breakup?” He narrated, sounding more like a broken record to me. Honestly, I couldn't care less what he has to say.
I tilt my head quite a bit to the right.
“So you're here to whine. Don't you think it's a little too late for that?”
A light chuckle eluded his lips as he looked away from me for a second and I found that act quite annoying.
“I'm not here to whine.” He started before leaning closer to me which I found a little disturbing. The Spencer I knew was presently acting a little different from himself.
“I know you never loved me while we were together and truthfully, I was never in love with you either but I knew the Harieth Gryffin needed a servant of a boyfriend so I played the part.” He added and slowly, my brows ceased up at his new revelation and I could see just how truthful he was being. I knew he was a little mysterious but I didn't quite care. I just needed him to show up at events alongside me and come to my beck and call. He wouldn’t deny the fact that my presence aided his modelling career.
A sigh eluded my lips as I folded my arms across my chest and leaned back in comfortableness.
“Spencer would you hit the nail on the head already. I haven't got all day.” I stated for him to know his new act was having no effect on me. I watched him stare at me for what seemed like a while, possibly surprised by how calm I was which was great on my part. A sly smile curled up the side of lips for a moment before it was gone.
Suddenly, he leaned back on his chair.
“We might not have been in love but I know you well enough Harieth… I know you've never been in love with any of the guys you've dated. I know you're media addicted and materialistic enough to move around with only people you can benefit from so when I heard of your supposed marriage to Christian Hendrix whose present worth is billions of dollars, it all became clear.”
“So what if I'm all that. Christian and I are in love and that's the truth.” I defended right away, trying my best not to show how pissed off I was at the moment. How dare he walk up to me and describe me like he knows a damn thing about me?
Another chuckle eluded his lips which angered me some more but thank God I still had the sunglasses on so he couldn't see how much effect he was starting to have on me.
“Love? It seems you haven't been listening to a word I've said. Harieth, you're too selfish to love someone else other than yourself…”
“I don't have to sit here and listen to your rubbish,” I stated in anger as I stormed up to my feet right away, about to leave but he stood up almost immediately and stopped me by grabbing onto my arm and standing right on my path. In a blink of an eye, he took off the sunglasses I had on so he could meet my eyes.
I glared at him hard with discontempt. Truly, he was passing his boundaries.
“It seems you've forgotten who I am. I'm Harieth Gryffin and I made your career what it is today. I can easily ruin it as well.”
“Perhaps, you did but you also humiliated me by dumping me the way you did. I had barely reached the climax of my career and then you did what you did. People never said it but at every event, I went without you, I could see their mocking glares.”
“And you think I can change that now?”
“No. I know you can't but we can be in the same situation together. You're going to feel just as I've felt and you're going to know what it feels like to be mocked and humiliated… I'm pretty sure the world knows nothing about what a farce your marriage is. ” He threatened and I could see just how much hatred he had for me in his eyes. At the moment, I hated him as well. To think I moved around with him.
Slowly, I felt him release my arm before taking a step back away from me. A broad smile appeared on his face like nothing out of the ordinary just happened. I watched him gently place my sunglasses on the table beside us.
“Till we meet again Harieth Gryffin.” He stated before he was on his way and I was left glaring at him, my heart pounding in anger against my ribcage. My hands folded into tight fists causing my nails to dig into my palms.
How dare he? How dare he threaten me? He seems to think he knows me so well. Too bad, he actually doesn't.
Somehow, I'm going to have to deal with him.
