Just a game... right?
Hizashi Yamada, Oboro Shirikumo and Iida Tensei were just three ordinary guys living an ordinary life. They each had their own dreams and carriers and families but most of all, they had their bond. The three of them had been best friends since highschool and were practically inseparable.
Hizashi was an intern for a big radio station, working towards his goal of one day being broadcasted all over Japan. His quirk, voice, allowed him to release ear-splitting scream which had the ability to topple buildings!
Oboro worked at a bar as a barista, putting on a great show and even teaching his friends a thing or two about drink making. His quirk was cloud and he used this to make his drink-making feel even more magical.
Iida had just recently started working in his family's buisness. They were car manufacturers and had the fastest engines in all of Japan. His quirk was fittingly 'Engine' and allowed him to run at lightning fast speeds thanks to the engine's in his elbows.
Every day the three of them would take the train to work and every night they went to Oboro's bar for a drink.
Yes, life was good for them. Hizashi looked across at his friends and saw the people who he never wanted to be apart from. People who he would want to stick with for the rest of his life. They were on a high and it seemed that nothing could go wrong!
That was... until they ended up in Borderland...
The three had wound up there after they were hiding from mall security in a bathroom stall. Then the power had gone out and everything fell silent.
Looking around, they couldn't see anyone. Their phones were out, as if they'd each run out of battery at the same time. No lights, no food, no electricity. They still had their quirks but other than that, it was just an empty city and the bestest friends a guy could ask for.
Sure it was unnerving but Hizashi could live with this. They could grow their own food and they didn't need to go to work now.
Yeah... maybe this wasn't so bad!
Then, the first game had happened...
A bright white light directing the trio to their area, urging them to play. Curiosity got the better of them and the three men unknowingly threw themselves into the most fucked up game they would ever play.
"The game: Live or Die.
Players must make a choice between the two within the given time limit.
Difficulty: 3 of clubs
Clear condition- choose the right door and reach the end."
Hizashi looked at the screen as he read over the rules again, as if he missed something the first time.
Nope. That was it.
"Ambiguous much?" He said
The trio had been surprised when two other people had shown up. A girl with dark, long hair and a piercing glare- Nemuri she said her name was. And another with a bright smile and shorter, green hair.
"The name's Emi!" She grinned.
"I'm Hizashi! That's Oboro and Tensei. Hey... do either of you know what's going on?" Hizashi asked
"Hm. First game?" Nemuri asked.
"Uhh I think so?" Oboro said.
Nemuri gave them a look of pity and sighed. "Don't let us down now then."
Hizashi suddenly felt a sharp pain on the back of his neck. Subtle, like a bug bite.
"Hey what the hell! My quirk!" Oboro said. "I-it's not working!"
"Well duh. Can't use quirks in the games! It'd be cheating! Don't worry, you get them back after the game." Nemuri said.
The five of them walked into an open room with two doors. Each had a poster on. One with an Angel, symbolising life. One with a Skeleton, symbolising death.
"Time for room is...: 2 minutes." The voice said again before going silent.
The group glanced between the doors, unsure of what to do next.
"Is... this a riddle?" Oboro asked
"Don't think so. We weren't given any clues." Hizashi said.
"You there, Nemuri. You've played this before right? Which one do we choose?" Tensei asked, starting a recording with the phone.
"I've played one of these 'games' before but not this one. From the looks of it, there are any number of games that could be played!" Nemuri said.
"But you've still got more experience than us right? So... you choose. Which one do we pick?" Emi asked with a smile.
Nemuri glanced between then doors and nervously shrugged. "I mean... it's obviously Live. In a choice between living and dying only a moron would pick death." She stated.
"Okay... so open it." Hizashi said.
"No way! I chose the door. You open it!" She argued.
"Hey... does anyone else smell that?" Iida asked.
They looked down and saw smoke filling the room.
"What the hell is this game?!!" Oboro shouted.
"We need to hurry! We've only got a minute left in this room!" Nemuri said.
"Then what happens?!!" Hizashi asked, grabbing her by the shoulders and shaking her vigorously.
She remained silent.
"Time remaining... 30 seconds."
"Oh screw this!" Emi said. She ran over to the 'live' door and opened it, hurrying to get through.
Bwwworram BAM
Emi collapsed to the floor in a pool of blood and the door swung shut behind her.
The others stood around in shock. Barely even registering the lowering timer.
Nemuri marched over to the 'die' door and opened it. She stepped though unharmed. Hizashi and Oboro finally collected their thoughts and ran though after her.
"Iida come on!" Hizashi shouted.
"5... 4... 3..."
He ran back into the room and grabbed his friend. Shoving them both through the door just as it burst into flames. Nemuri shut the door behind them as the others tried to process what happened.
"Time for this room... 1 minute, 40 seconds..."
"Seriously?! Not even a break?!" Oboro shouted.
"You... you just killed that girl!" Hizashi shouted at Nemuri.
"If I didn't then we'd all be burnt alive by now! You'd have done the same if you knew the stakes!" Nemuri snapped
"But she didn't know the stakes! You knew what would happen and you didn't tell any of us!" Hizashi shouted.
Tensei was throwing up on the floor at the thought of Emi lying dead on the floor.
"What... what even was that?" He muttered.
"Easiest way to put it, some kind of sky laser. Pretty sure all of us are being tracked by them so the minute we loose a game, we get a beam though our skull." Nemuri said.
"That's horrific!" Oboro said.
"And that's the nice way to go." Nemuri said.
"What do you-"
"Time remaining... 50 seconds."
"You. Nemuri. You kept the stakes a secret from us! Seems fair that you open the next door." Hizashi said.
"You would've done the same as me! And your doing it now! If your so desperate to prove I'm wrong then you open the door yourself!!" Nemuri shouted back.
"FINE!" Hizashi looked between the two doors. "If it was die last time... then surely it would be live this time? Oh no they'd be expecting that... so... die?"
He walked over to the skeleton door and placed his shaking hand on the door nob.
"Hizashi... don't let her get to you..." Oboro warned.
"I... I have to do this..." He muttered.
"Hizashi..."
He could feel the sweat running down his forehead. Why was he shaking so dam much!?
"HIZASHI!"
He let go of the door handle and sank to the floor. Shaking, sweaty and with tears in his eyes.
"I... I can't... Nemuri's right. I would've done the same thing."
Nemuri stood smugly whilst Oboro glared at her.
"Time remaining... 20 seconds."
"Oh this is ridiculous." Oboro marched over the the 'live' door. "I'll choose. You've always had bad luck anyway..."
"Oboro... you don't have to-"
"It's fine. We'll take it in turns. You." He glared at Nemuri. "Your going next. Hizashi, Tensei, if I die, make sure she goes next."
"Oboro don't be stupid! We can figure something out-"
"10 seconds."
"There isn't any time."
"Oboro!" Hizashi shouted.
Oboro opened the door and braced himself.
"OBORO!!"
...
Nothing happened.
"Oboro..." Tensei said, smiling with relief at his friend being alive.
The other three picked themselves up and ran though the door, just as the room burst into flames.
"Time for this room... 1 minute, 20 seconds."
Oboro sat on the floor, trying to calm himself down.
"Now..." he said. "It's your turn." He went over to Nemuri and grabbed her wrist, forcing her to her feet. "I'll choose." He threw her against the door. "Live."
Nemuri leaned against the door with a whimper.
"Open it." Oboro said.
Nemuri held her breath and shook her head.
"OPEN IT YOU BITCH!!"
"Oboro! Stop! You aren't like this!" Tensei tried to calm him down.
"Shut up Iida! She's going to get us all killed if she doesn't open that door!"
"Hizashi do something!" Iida shouted.
"Don't do a fucking thing Hizashi! Don't forget this bitch almost got you killed just now!" Oboro shouted. He turned back to Nemuri.
"OPEN IT!"
"WAIT DON'T!!" Hizashi shouted.
Everyone else looked at him.
"The answer is die."
He got up and walked over to the door.
"Wait wait wait how can you be sure??" Tensei asked.
"I'm not 100% sure... but I've got a theory..." he put his hand on the door nob and shut his eyes.
"Please work..."
"Hizashi wait!"
He opened the door and opened his eyes.
No laser.
"Haha! Yes! I was right!"
The others followed him into the room with only 10 seconds left to spare.
"Time limit for room... 1 minute."
"You've figured out the pattern?" Oboro asked.
"How did you even do that??" Nemuri asked.
"I'm not as stupid as I look you know! This building is on the same street as that old arcade we used to go to right?"
"Oh yeah the one you loved so much you wrote a whole assignment about it!" Iida said.
"Yeah! Well I really did my research and I even remembered the area of the building. Well, assuming that all of these buildings follow the same schematics, this building is around 10m by 10m, give or take."
Hizashi walked from one end of the room to the other.
"Yep, just as I thought. 10 steps. That means there are approximately 9 rooms like this. Um, does anyone have a pen and some paper?" Hizashi asked.
Nemuri and Iida gave him a pen and something to write on and he drew a square with 9 boxes in.
"See we started here... this room is where Emi died... and thanks to Oboro we know that this room here is deadly too." He draw crosses over two of the boxes.
"We went forward twice so for this one we need to go right!" He looked to the right and saw the door labelled 'live'. "It's this one!"
He went through and survived again. "I knew it!"
"Time limit for this room is 45 seconds."
"Which one?" Nemuri asked.
"Die!"
The group continued to follow the drawing, surviving each room.
"This one is live! Then after that it's straight forward and we're out!" Hizashi said proudly.
They went through the correct door but instead of being met by a door infront of them leading to their way out, the four of them were surprised to only see a door to the left. And a door to the right.
"Well we can't go right, right? That's where Emi died. So we go left?" Nemuri said. Three of them walked towards the door but Hizashi stopped them.
"Wait don't!" He shouted. They all stopped and he pulled out the paper. "The fire exit would be straight forward... but there isn't a door there!" If we go to the right then we definitely die. But we can't go left either!" He then looked up and turned to Tensei.
"Iida. You got a video of the first room didn't you?"
"Do we really have time for this?!" Nemuri asked
"Yeah it's right here." Iida pulled up the video and Hizashi scrolled through to the point where Emi got hit with the laser.
"There! Look!" He zoomed in past Emi to look at the wall behind her. "There's no door!"
"Time remaining... 10 seconds."
"So what does that mean?" Oboro asked.
"There's a secret area behind that door!" Hizashi pointed at the door to the right.
"5... 4... 3..."
The group scrambled though the door as quickly as they could.
"2...1."
The room burst into flames.
"ARRGGHH! AHH!" Tensei cried. His leg was ablaze and Oboro rushed to put it out while Nemuri went for the 'live' door with a fire exit sign above it.
"Don't open it! It's a trick!" Hizashi shouted. "The answer is die!"
"5... 4... 3... 2... 1..." the group pushed though the final door, escaping the game just as the room filled with fire.
All four of them quickly ran down the stairs, hurrying to get far away from the 'game'.
"Ah! Shit that hurts!" Tensei said, clutching his burnt leg.
They sat down in an alleyway next to the building.
"Here, let me help." Nemuri said. She pulled up her sleeve and some pink mist came out. Tensei's limbs relaxed as he fell into a light sleep.
"Looks like our quirks are back." Hizashi said.
It was then that the four of their phones chimed.
"Game cleared. Congratulations!
Visa days remaining: 3."
"A visa?" Oboro asked.
"I guess that means in 3 days we'll have to play another game?" Hizashi guessed.
Nemuri stood up and walked over to a white table that was placed in the middle of the alleyway. On it, laid a single card.
The three of clubs.
"Hey!" They heard. The group looked down the alleyway where they saw a short, old man, covered with several cuts and bruises. "My visa... it expires today..." he said, although he said it with no concern. "I want to warn you, there is no end to this place. I've been here for months, seen the horrors of death too many times to count." He looked to the sky with a smile. "Finally... I can escape this nightmare..."
Bwwworram BAM
The man collapsed.
Blood leaking from his skull and a smile on his face.
The others could only watch in horror as the sounds of other lasers going off all around the city rang through the streets.
"Come on. We need to find a place to lay low." Oboro said. He and Hizashi hoisted up Tensei and put him on one of Oboro's clouds and the group finally left the alleyway.
