Chapter 48

LEAH’S POV

Walking in the hallways of the school headed towards the exit at the front.  I was happy, happy it was Friday and that the weekend was finally here.  Happy that I was going to Laura’s for a girl’s night.

I was excited. 

Getting outside I found Laura and Chris and walked towards them.

‘Hey you, excited or what?!’ I asked Laura.

She laughed.  Looking at Chris, he looked like a lost puppy.

‘What’s wrong with you?’ I asked him.

‘Nothing.’  He said.  ‘He’s sad that he’s not coming along.’ Laura said to me.

‘Well…he can come if he wants, I don’t care.’ I told her.

‘Um…’Chris started but Laura cut him off, ‘No, it’s you and me.  We haven’t done this in awhile now and…just no.  Baby, I love you and all but no.’ she told him shaking her head.

I laughed but stopped with Chris gave me a dirty look.

‘Go have fun with Jason.  You can have all day with her tomorrow if you want.’ I told him.

‘I don’t know when he’s done work.’ He said to me.

‘Me either but, he’ll call you.  You’ll just have to be a little patient.’ I told him.

He nodded.

I put my arm around his shoulders and he looked at me with big eyes because I never did this. ‘Go have fun with your brother.  You’ll both have a good time, and I’m sure you’ll both tell me about it another time.’ I said smiling at him.

He nodded and I took my arm way.  ‘You girls should go.  Call me later.’ He said to us but calling him later, pretty sure he said that to Laura.

Laura gave him a hug and a kiss and she walked back towards me. 

‘Tell your big brother I love him!’ I told Chris walking away with a big smile on my face, heading towards our bus.

Waiting at the stop to go too Laura’s house, we were heading the opposite direction from my bus to go too the apartment.  I couldn’t believe we were moving.  I was probably going to tell Laura about it, to excited too keep that to myself, which was one thing I could share.

‘What do you want to do first?’ Laura asked me.

‘Um…’ I started saying but stop, thinking of all my options.

‘Pizza?’ Laura asked me.

‘Is it too early?’ I asked her.

‘We could watch a movie, or talk and then in a couple hours order.  What do you think?’ she asked me.

‘Talk, pizza then movie.’ I said nodding my head.

‘Okay, sounds good.’ She said.

The bus got here not long after and we found ourselves a seat close to each other.

We never talked much in the bus, everyone so close to each other, every one could hear your conversations.  We never liked that so we just didn’t really talk in the bus, except with standard questions.

Half an hour later we got to Laura’s house.  Going up the path to the front door, I took my time, like I always did.  Looking at all the details of the house, the ground, they took such good care of the property and you could tell they loved it.

‘You always do that?  Why?’ Laura said, making me pay attention back to her.

‘I find it fascinating.  You live in a beautiful place, you have beautiful things, you’re very lucky.’ I answered.

‘And you’re not?  Miss great clothes, bags, shoes…’ she said back to me.

‘I know I’m lucky.  I wouldn’t change this life for anything.’ I answered her.

‘This life?’ she asked laughing.

I laughed, ‘Sorry, I think I’m reading to many books or something.’ I told her.  ‘I just meant, you can easily see that the house, front yard and back yard are well taken care of.  For it to be like this you really have to love it or else, it wouldn’t be done.’ I said.

‘Yeah, I get it.’ She said.  ‘My mom does love it here.  She loves everything about this place.’ She said, smiling.

I smiled back at her, ‘Let’s go in.’ I said.

Inside the house, we both put our bags on the floor at the entrance and went to the kitchen like we always did.

‘Is your mom home?’ I asked her.

‘No, she’s working late, then going somewhere with friends if I heard her correctly this morning.’ She answered.

‘Nice, so just you and me.’ I told her.

‘Yup.’ She said smiling.

Laura put some chips into a bowl and we both grabbed something to drink and went into the living room.

Both of us sitting on the long couch that was so much more comfortable than mine I turned my body so I could see her better and she did the same.  We always sat at the same spot every time when I was here. 

‘How’s things going with Chris?’ I asked Laura.  Getting the gossip going.

‘Good, well actually great.  He talks more than before.  It’s like he did this 180 degree and he’s even better than before.  He talks to me and if theirs a problem we talk about it…but sometimes I ask him questions, he doesn’t answer them.  Like he’s hiding something and won’t tell me.  I can tell he wants to but he never says a thing.  We got a few arguments about that.’ She told me.

I took a deep breath because I knew what Chris’s problem was, it was me. 

‘He’s open about so many things but others, he shuts down.  I don’t get it and I try to understand but I don’t know what I’m supposed to understand.  It’s frustrating but everything else, he’s great.’ She said.

‘Well…maybe it’s not his secret.’ I told her.

‘What do you mean?’ she asked me.

‘Well, maybe he’s not talking about it because he promised someone that he wasn’t going to say anything.  That’s it’s not his to tell, you know?’ I said to her.

‘Then who’s secret would it be?’ she asked me.

‘I don’t know, but…if he wants to tell you but doesn’t, it’s probably a big thing and the person is ashamed of it.  Give it time, hang in there…most of the time secrets have a way of coming out.  Also, I’m pretty positive that it’s not Chris’s secret.  He wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize your relationship.’ I told her.

‘How do you know?’ she asked me.

‘Jason would of told me and we probably, me for sure, would have kicked his ass.’ I told her smiling.

She laughed, ‘well, than I’m glad I got you in my corner.’

‘I’ll always be in your corner.  You’re the first person that became my friend when I got here.  You’re amazing Laura, don’t sell yourself short.  The guy who you end up with, he’s going to be so lucky.  I know I’m not the perfect friend, but you changed my life.’ I told her.

Smiling at me she said, ‘You are the perfect friend.’

I smiled back but, not a real one.  She maybe thought that but I knew it was far from the truth.

‘How are you and Jason?’ she asked me.

I laughed, ‘We’re good, he’s good and I’m good.  I never believed guys like him existed.  Even with all the chick flicks movies we’ve watched, I thought it was just a bunch of fairytales.  But…he surprises me somehow everyday.  He’s sweet, thought full, he cares about my feeling, and we can talk…he’s great.’ I said.

‘I’m happy for you.’ Laura said.

‘You were right though…who would have thought, you, me and brothers.’ I said laughing.

‘I know!’ she said laughing.

‘I have something to tell you but don’t freak out ok, because it’s not written in stones yet.’ I said to her.

‘Okay, I’m listening.’ She said.

‘Well, Jason and I want to move in together, since my birthday is coming up.  We were thinking of renting an apartment.’ I told her.

‘Wow!  That’s fast no?’ she asked.

‘Yeah I know, but I want to and so does he.  It’s our last year of school so…we said why not.’ I told her.

‘What kind of apartment, where? And when?’ she asked.

‘Well, probably a two bedroom, where, I don’t know yet we’re going to start looking and maybe seeing places tomorrow and when, next month, well in a few days.’ I told her.

‘Shit!’ she said smiling.

‘Why two bedrooms?’ she asked.

‘Well, I know it’s seriously not my place to say but I know Chris and his parents are having trouble so the second bedroom would be for him.  And you could come over anytime, to see him or to see me.’ I told her.

‘Are you fucking serious?!’ she asked me getting totally excited.

‘Yeah.’ I said smiling at her.

‘Oh my God!’ she yelled and jumped on me giving me a hug.  ‘Oh my God, that’s going to be freaking awesome!’

I laughed, ‘Yeah it is.’ I said and hugged her back.

She got up and sat back down on her spot.  ‘So when are you two, well you three going to start looking?’ she asked me.

‘Well, I’m pretty sure they’re going to start looking tonight or, tomorrow morning.  I’m hoping to be able to see some places tomorrow or Sunday.  If not, Monday and depending what time the owners can show us the place I might not be at school that day.’ I told her.

‘Wow!’ she said.  ‘So that means it’s going really great then between you and Jason.’ She added with a big smile.

‘Yeah, he’s great.’ I said honestly.

‘Well now I know you two are having sex.’ She pointed out.

‘Laura!’ I almost yelled.

We both started laughing.  I shook my head, I couldn’t expect anything else from my best friend.

‘So is he good?’ she asked. 

I laughed, ‘Why do you want to know?’ I asked.

‘Well, if he isn’t, which I doubt very much, some of the things Chris does are really fucking awesome and I could tell you so Jason could do to you.’ She said with a smile.

‘Um…1, No, 2, they’re brothers, do you really think that would ever work?  Hey Jason Laura told me Chris did this to her and also, this position and it just blew her mind.  Laura that would never work and is completely disgusting.  3. Jason is…a fucking God in that department.  He doesn’t need help.  Trust me!’  I told her.

She laughed, ‘He’s that good?’ she asked.

‘Fuck yeah.’ I said and nodded my head.

‘Yeah, Chris is pretty great too.  Wow, again who would have thought, two brothers, two best friends, and all have a great sex life.’ She said.

‘You make it sounds like the four of us are one relationship.’ I looked at her, kind of confused and weirded out at the same time.

She laughed and shook her head.  ‘Sorry, not what I meant, I just meant, we’re all happy.  I think it’s pretty cool.’ She said.

‘Yeah, it’s pretty cool.’ I said.

‘You hungry?’ she asked me.

‘Actually I am, what about you?’ I asked her.

‘Yup.’ She answered.

She got up from the couch and went to get the phone.  She ordered our pizza, came back and sat back down.

She didn’t need to ask me what I wanted, she already knew.  I always asked for the same thing so she stopped asking a long time ago.

‘Okay, did you want to pick the movie or?’ she asked.

‘Don’t care, you can pick if you want.’ I offered.

‘Okay.’  She got back up and walked towards the wall unit where the movies where. 

‘Close your eyes.’ She said.

‘Seriously?’ I asked.

‘Yeah.’ She answered.

I closed my eyes and I could hear her opening the case then I heard the DVD player close.  A few seconds later, ‘Okay, you can open.’ She said.

I opened my eyes and looked at her, she was back on the couch with the remotes in her hands.

She turned on the TV, ‘We can start to watch it, is that okay?’ she asked.

‘Sounds good.’ I told her, I made myself more comfortable and she continued to work with the TV to put the movie on.

‘What are we watching anyway?’ I asked her.

‘You’ll see.’ Is all she said.

Watching the previews of other films, I knew I’ve seen them before but I didn’t say anything.  When the movie picture appeared I looked at Laura shocked.

‘Zoolander!  You picked Zoolander!’ I yelled, completely excited.

She laughed.  ‘But you hate that movie, why would you pick it?’ I asked her.

‘Well, you haven’t been here in awhile and, I’m glad you came, just a little thank you.’ She said.

‘I’m happy to be here too.  Thank again…for everything.’

‘Anytime.’ She answered.

We stopped talking as the movie started.  After half an hour we stopped the movie because the pizza was here.  We ate at the table and talked about little things.  She needed to go shopping and I told her I’d go with her, I wanted to get a few things.

‘I want to go to La Senza or La Vie en Rose.’ I told Laura.

‘You want to buy Lingerie?’ she asked me with a smile trying not to laugh.

‘Shut up! Don’t laugh! But I’d like to see what they’ve got.  Maybe I could surprise Jason or something.’ I told her and a smile of my own.  I could just picture Jason’s face when he would see me.

‘Well, we could go see.  No harm in that.’ She said.

We continued eating and then put everything away.  We went back into the living room and continued to watch my favorite movie.

After our second movie I knew I needed to leave to make the last bus leaving for me to go home.

We started getting up and cleaned up the living room.  Laura had made popcorn when we started to watch Can’t Buy Me Love.  She grabbed the bowl and I grabbed our empty coke cans and went to the kitchen.

‘Thanks for tonight.  I missed this.’ I confessed.

‘Me too, I had fun.’ She said.

I went to the front door and grabbed my school bag.  ‘So I’ll see you Monday at school if nothing is going on.’ I told her.

‘Yeah let me know or I’ll ask Chris next time I see him.’ She said.

‘Sounds good, I know he’s excited to have you over for a sleepover.’ I said laughing.

‘I’m sure he is.’ She said back, laughing herself.

I gave her a hug, ‘Thanks again, you’re the best.’

‘Anytime.  I’ll see you soon and good luck with the search.’ She told me smiling.

I chuckled, ‘Yeah.’ I nodded.  ‘Bye.’ I said and opened the door.

‘Bye.’ She said.  I walked outside and made my way out of their front yard.  I waved bye to Laura who was still at the front door.  She waved back and then I made my way to the bus stop.

The road was practically deserted, only a few cars now and then but no one on the sidewalk.  I got to the bus stop and sat on the bench.  I knew I had maybe 15 minutes to wait and so it wasn’t that bad.

I never liked the dark but I wanted to go home and see Jason.  I’d missed him, it was the first time I wasn’t home with him.  I just hoped the bus would get here soon. 

When someone said excuse me, I didn’t hear it.  I was busy thinking of Jason, of fantasizing about him.  Hearing his voice and his magic fingers.  I smiled to myself.

When the person finally caught my attention, ‘Sorry’ I said, embarrassed I hadn’t noticed anyone there before.

When I looked at the person talking to me, my though was, Ah Shit.
