Part 21
"I think it's time..." He says breathlessly. "It's time to kill the demon..."
Phil told me about the Seraph a while ago. Though all he said was that he had a friend working on one and that it was a knife of some sorts that could kill demons- or at least send them back to hell.
"How are we gonna get the knife?" I ask.
Phil takes a deep breath. He seems to be very nervous about the whole ordeal. "I can communicate with other angels... I'll get my friend working on the seraph to bring it."
This takes me by surprise. If he can communicate with other angels, why didn't he do it? or at least tell me he could? What else can he do that I don't know about? "Oh..." I say, not knowing what else to say.
"I'll tell him now and then he'll be here any minute," Phil tells me.
I nod and Phil walks over to the couch and sits down. He makes his wings visible and closes his eyes. He breathes deeply for a minute before beginning to whisper something. For some reason, this feels like some sort of private activity and I look away on instinct to give Phil some privacy.
Phil stands up and opens his eyes. "Chris is on his way," Phil tells me.
"Chris?"
"My friend. He forges weapons. He's been working on the Seraph for months now." Phil says.
"How long will it take him?" I ask.
Then, there's a knock on the door. Phil waves his brows at me and shrugs as he goes to answer the door.
"That can't be him already?" I say quietly to myself as I follow Phil to the door.
When Phil opens it, I see a man about Phil's age but slightly shorter. He has a head of light to mid brown hair with a fringe that's swept to the side. His eyes are green and he's wearing a red shirt, black jeans and a green hooded jacket. In his hands is a white case which looks almost like a briefcase but smaller.
"Hello, Phil." The man says with a nervous smile.
"Long time no see Chris." Phil smiles as he opens the door for him to walk in. Chris steps into my home and takes a deep breath as he looks around.
When he meets eyes with me he stops. "You must be Samantha." He says. "Phil, you never told me she was this beautiful."
I blush and Phil seems to do the same.
"I'm just messing about, you're not that pretty." Chris laughs. "Joking. Obviously."
"In here," Phil says, smiling as he walks into the kitchen. Chris and I follow him and then Chris puts the case on the breakfast bar.
"When are you gonna... do it?" Chris asks as he pushes the two buttons on the case.
"As soon as possible," Phil says with a deep breath.
"Next week?" Chris asks. "A bit too early don't you think? You need to... emotionally prepare and stuff."
"No... not next week." Phil scratches his arm nervously.
"Oh good because you don't wanna do it too early-"
"We're doing it tonight," Phil tells the other angel.
There's a thick silence between us. Chris is lost for words. I feel a wave of dread creep up on me like an assassin and my throat goes dry with nerves.
"I see," Chris says. "Well then I suppose we're gonna get you home sooner than expected," Chris says optimistically with a smile as he opens up the case.
The case is lined with a gold fabric and a little velvet cushion with a dagger pressed into the centre of it practically glows as the case opens fully.
"This," Chris tells me. "Is the Seraph."
Chris picks it up delicately as if it could shatter into billions of pieces. The handle is made of glass and there is a long spiral of gold which wraps around it. The blade is sharp and pointed with two indents on each side. The end curls up slightly and it practically glows with power.
He hands it over tentatively and I take the handle. It's heavier than expected and it's almost as if my fingers are drawn to it as I grip the handle.
"Remember. You need to stab him in the chest for it to work." Chris says as he closes the case and picks it up. "I don't have much time, the summoning only lasts for about five minutes you see." He says. "I'll see you soon Phil."
Chris then leaves without any further words. I watch after him and see that he's slowly becoming more translucent with every passing second.
"Summoning?" I ask Phil.
"A summoning can bring an angel to you for a brief moment of time. Only other angels can do it though." Phil explains.
I look down at the dagger in my hands. It feels so natural to hold it. Phil looks at it too.
"It's pretty." He says. "I've never seen one before."
I gently place it on the breakfast bar and it makes a clink sound as it comes in contact with the marble surface.
As I close my eyes, loads of thoughts go through my head. What did Dan say? That I'll be alone when Phil goes?
I think of Darby. Of the fire. Of the collapse. Of her money problems. Money... that's it.
My parents opened a savings account for me when I was three and I've never touched it. I got access to it since I was 18 but I never bothered with it. I have a house. I have what I need.
Darby needs that money more than I do.
I open my eyes and look at Phil.
"I have to go." I say.
"What? where?" He asks, but I simply grab my purse and go.
"Wait here. I won't be long I promise." I say as I rush out of the house.
I run down the street and make my way to the bank.
It takes about ten minutes to get my money. It's a lot. More than enough for what Darby needs.
I run out of the bank and start running to Max's.
But I feel tired. I feel worn out. I stop and catch my breath, then see the front page of a newspaper roll past in the wind.
'Local Diner Burns To The Ground'
Darby's is on the front page.
Suddenly, I'm filled with determination and I begin running again.
I make it to Max's house in record time and I stop at the front gate, panting. Max's truck isn't parked in the driveway and I feel my stomach bubble. What if they aren't home? Maybe I should just turn around?
No.
I walk up the garden and hesitantly knock on the door.
After a minute, I hear a key in the door and it opens slowly.
Darby is there, looking as beautiful and radiant as ever.
She looks blankly at me.
"Darby..." I say, not knowing how else to respond.
She sighs. "Come in."
I walk into the house and follow her into the living room.
Darby sits on the couch and I sit on the other. It's quiet for a moment before I realise Darby is waiting for me to tell her what I came here for. "Look... Darby, I'm sorry I didn't tell you about... About Phil..." I say. "Truth is... I didn't think you'd believe me..."
Darby simply licks her bottom lip and looks into the distance, trying not to lay her eyes on me for whatever reason. "What is he?" She asks.
"He's an angel... My guardian angel. He's here because a demon is trying to get me... Once the demon's killed, he goes back home."
Darby takes a deep breath, still not sparing me even a single glance. "So angels are real... Demons are real... what else is real?"
I don't answer her.
"Darby, I didn't just come here to tell you about Phil..." I say. "I came here to give you something."
Darby then looks at me. "You're trying to bribe me so I forgive you for not telling me?" She asks. "Honey... I forgive you... I was just... shocked and I shouldn't have blamed you... I probably wouldn't have believed you if I hadn't seen his... His true form."
I pull out a couple of very thick envelopes, stuffed with money.
"This is for you... For Darby's..." I say as I hand her the money.
She opens one of the envelopes carefully and when she sees what's inside, she instantly drops both envelopes as if they're hot.
"Jesus H. Christ where did you get that?" She asks in shock.
"My saver's account. I don't need the money so... I figured you did." I answer.
Darby then leaps for me and wraps her arms around me tightly in a loving hug.
It feels good to be with her again. And I'll never let her go.
