Ch9.1 Starting a Club
The next day rolled around pretty quick and the day was already off to a bad start when I came out of geography. I didn't hate geography but I didn't like it either. It was one of those lesson I could have definitely done without having every week.
Well, I guess the actual lesson wasn't bad, it was...Tolerable, if you got by the constant interruptions, the boring documentaries and the teacher, Mr Sterling, or if you had him as often as me Mr Grey. Mr Sterling was the most uninteresting, dull, lifeless, tiring teacher in the entire school, and no I am not exaggerating.
Every aspect of him was grey, from his classroom even down to his wedding ring. His teaching skills weren't much better. Mr Sterling's voice had this annoying habit of stretching out syllables making short ten second sentences last about double the time. Also, his tone of voice was the most boring thing in the world and if used correctly could probably even be a weapon of mass destruction. If he were alive during world war 2 there would be no doubt England would win, they could just send him over and give the Germans one of his lectures.
They'd all die of boredom.
When the lesson finally ended, I felt like all my life energy had been sucked out of me and the day wasn't even half done. Victoria was waiting for me outside the notice board where we found the club poster as cheerful as ever, which didn't help my mood. She waved to me as I made my way over.
"Hey." she said.
"Hey." I groaned walking sluggishly beside her.
"Well don't you seem cheerful today," she said with sarcasm.
"Oh please like anyone would be cheerful after having geography with Mr Sterling. Especially after he went overtime to explain the importance of globalisation." I groaned.
"Oh yeah, I forgot you have him today. I feel for you, there's only so much Sterling a person can take." She patted my shoulder in a sympathetic way while laughing and I groaned yet again.
"Anyway, try to cheer up will you. Today we get to hunt for club members." She added a little spring to her voice that teachers usually use to make something seem more exciting that it sounded. It didn't work.
"Yeah cause that's so much fun," I replied sarcastically.
"Don't be like that, what happened to all that mojo you had yesterday?" She asked.
"It went down the drain along with my patients and energy for today."
What Victoria didn't know was that Mr Sterling's boring documentary wasn't the only reason I was exhausted. I was still feeling the after effects of lasts night's strange dream, I mean so much happened and I was in no mood to get up and go to school that day, but I dragged myself out of bed for her sake despite all that. I tried hard not to think about it too much while I was at school, but it always had a way of creeping into my mind slowly.
The things I felt, my emotions going haywire, I'd never forget how it felt and that girl who looked exactly like Victoria, Celeste, was there some sort of connection between them? Whenever I tried to think deeply about it I always got a headache, but I just couldn't help it, and even as I was talking to Victoria my mind would still wander back to that event now and again.
"So on a more happy note, I officially made these." Victoria said and I was brought back to reality. She stopped for a second to crouch and open her bag. After reaching her hand in and feeling around she eventually pulled out something and before I could ask what it was, she had handed me a bunch of pieces of paper.
"What are they?" I asked eyeing them.
"Posters, about the club, I thought it could help. You know, advertising." she said casually.
I looked at them "Newspaper club looking for new members, if you're interested come and find Victoria Williams or Josh Carter to discuss becoming a member." it was short and to the point. But they weren't really that eye-catching, with her just having put those word in the middle of every piece of blank paper.
"It could use... work," I said.
"Yeah I know they're rubbish, but they're what I had time for so were gonna use them." I shrugged my shoulders seeing as it didn't really bother me in the slightest.
"Whatever floats your boat, but I doubt anyone will pay attention to them with all the other paper on the notice board." I said my eyes wandering around the corridor at the people walking by, something I just tended to do when I was bored. I didn't know why but if felt like people were looking our way more and more as the days went on. I guess it's to be expected, the loner now somehow has a friend, and a girl at that, people were most likely gonna wonder how that happened so suddenly.
"Oh, these aren't going on the notice board." she replied.
"Hmm, then where are they going?"
"It's simple, we're going to hand these out ourselves." she declared.
"No... you're going to hand them out yourself, I already agreed to join your club and now you want to make me your personal flyer distributor as well, two words, No. Way." I was a pretty big suck up when it came to her and I didn't know why, but I wasn't just going to sit and let her convince me into doing her bidding twice. Once was enough.
"You say that now but in the end, you'll be handing them out as well." She grinned as if she knew that that was what I was thinking, which it was.
"Are you saying I'm that much of a suck up I'd just give into you whenever you want?" I frowned.
"Mmm...Yeah pretty much."
"You little-" I frowned even more.
"Don't get your boxers in a twist, I'm joking. Well half joking anyway." She laughed at my serious expression, (I didn't blame her I did look kind of hilarious when I was trying to keep a straight face).
"Right..." I said.
Since we had time, we were on our way to the student council room to put forward our club suggestion that we had come up with the day before. We soon reached the door of the council room and I gave a fairly loud knock on the door, it took a while but eventually some girl opened up.
"Yeah?" She said. She was quite tall and she had green eyes, a bit cat-like. Her hair was done up in a messy ponytail and she was dark brown in complexion.
"We, we have a club suggestion we'd like to put forward," Victoria said.
The girls eyes lit up, "sure, come in."
I had never been in the school council room before, it was a lot smaller than I had thought with it being just about the size of a classroom give or take. In the centre, there was a long table stretching from one end of the room to the other with chairs around it. There were papers covering the table and some bags and coats still left on some of the chairs. The room walls were pretty bland, it was your standard white wall with some post-it notes pinned to parts of it. The application forms were on top of some English exercise books and the girl handed us a sheet.
"Do ya want to fill it in now?" She asked.
"Yes, thank you, Victoria said.
We didn't waste much time in filling it in it only needed a name club description and the names of the people who want to start it.
The girl looked at it. "A newspaper club huh? It's a good idea."
"Thanks," I replied.
"We haven't had many applicants since we put up the notice and the ones we did get all were declined for various reason and some were just plain stupid. It's nice to see some normal suggestions for once." The girl smiled and stared at the paper, it looked like she was deep in thought.
"Um...Is something wrong?" I asked.
"No, it's nothing... but ya know, I may even want to join." She trailed off.
"Really!?!" I felt my eyes widen. "Aren't you already a member of the student council?" I asked.
"No, I get asked that a lot though, I just look after the council room sometimes when the actual council are on break," she said as she whirled the keys on her fingers.
"You're serious?" Victoria asked again.
"Sure, I don't have anything better to do really, and it's a way to kill time I was actually thinking if a good club came along I'd join it. The other sporty clubs were never my forte and I did always like writing." she smiled.
"Thank you so much, Josh we got our first club member!" Victoria was practically bubbling with excitement. She grabbed hold of me and out of nowhere hugged me tightly, for a girl of her height, she had a surprisingly strong grip.
"Victoria, let go... You're hurting me." I struggled to breathe she eventually let go.
The girl laughed, "You two are quite something aren't ya. I'm Lola by the way. I'm gonna take a wild guess and say your names are Josh and Victoria?"
"Mmm-hmm" I nodded.
"Well, Josh, Vicky it's nice to meet ya."
"Vicky?" I said.
"Victoria seemed too formal for me, Vicky's much more my alley if we're going to be friends don't ya think, but that's of course if you don't mind."
"No it's fine, I like it and it's nice to meet you too Lola," Victoria smiled.
"OK then, now that that's settled the notice should be up by lunch time, if you need me I'm always here and if I'm not I'll probably be in the library."
"Thanks so much, you don't know how much you've helped us!" Victoria said.
"Don't mention it, good luck. People like you don't really come around often. I can tell were going to get along just fine. Anyway don't be strangers out there, I'll see ya around. " Lola replied as she saw us out.
