Chapter 47: You Are the Jar Now
"Hey! Hi! It's me! Rick Twitler! How are you?"
"How am I?" Henry asked in a rather annoyed tone.
"We're coming for you, Twitler!".
I let out a tired sigh and put a hand in front of me, so Jasper could pause the video... oh jeez.
"Guys" I wrinkled my nose "it's a video message".
"He can't hear you" Jasper continued.
"I... I knew it" Henry said trying to sound like he did know "I just wanted to make sure you guys knew that, keep it rolling".
I loved my job, not only for watching the two Swellview superheroes fight crime, nor for helping them and knowing the biggest secret in the world, I loved it because being there, all kinds of nonsense came out, which was the most fun.
Schwoz played the video.
"Now, I know you're mad at me for stealing Kid Danger's superpowers and putting them in this," he held up a tube that was bright green, with some kind of liquid that moved too much, "but I think you have more important things to worry about, like, I don't know, protecting Kid Danger's family from the thugs I just sent to his house..."
We all turned around worried, how the hell did he know where I lived?
"... or I mean, the thugs I sent to Henry Hart's house..."
"How do you know my real name?" I paused the video and bit my lower lip, waiting for the boy to catch on "...it's... it's what I would say, if he could hear me..." uh-huh yes "and I know he can't... so".
I repeat, I love my job, I shook my head amused and played the video again, I didn't want to laugh because it was a serious moment, Rick Twitler knew Henry's identity, but he wasn't helping with his comments.
"Let's see..." Twitler was reading a list on a notebook "... I made the introduction, I made a threat, send the thugs to Henry's house... yeah, I think I'm done. Any questions?" I raised my arms confused "oh yeah! It's a video message" the video ended.
"Okay, okay" Henry said nervously "I have to go protect my family, you go get the bee" he pointed at Ray "or you can come to my house, someone else goes get the bee or we could all go get the bee and take it to my house..." poor boy, I walked to him trying to calm him down "I'm getting scared! Kai! I'M GETTING SCARED!".
To try to calm him down, I lightly put my arms around his shoulders, but he kept yelling that he was scared, just less than before.
"Hey!" Jasper shouted making him shut up "I'll go find the bee! I have the perfect jar upstairs at Junk N' Stuff".
I opened my eyes in surprise, I don't understand how Jasper could have an idea, and it was really a good idea, respect.
"And I will be Jasper's adult supervision" Char said "Kai, you coming?".
I nodded. I turned to see Henry, letting go of him a little.
"You'll be okay?" I asked him "Sorry, are more okay now?".
"Yes, and yes, thanks" he gave me a half smile "go with them".
"Well, see you soon and Henry, be safe, please" returned the gesture.
He walked up to me and hugged me "You be safe too".
I received his hug, causing a small prick in my heart like the one a few hours ago, I didn't hesitate two seconds to return it, and it's because for some reason this hug felt a little different than the ones I had given him before, it felt more real, more sincere and with another feeling.
We were hugging each other for about five seconds, when out of nowhere a big "AWWWWW" was heard throughout the Man Cave.
Henry and I separated and turned to the part of the room where that exclamation had been heard, where we found Charlotte, Jasper, Schwoz, Ray and Katelyn, with a tender look on their faces.
"What?" I asked irritated.
"So cute," Schwoz answered.
I let out a tired sigh "Okay?" and tried to suppress a smile.
I looked at Henry, and he had a slight smile on his lips, which he erased as soon as he realized I was looking at him. He cleared his throat a little and clicked his tongue.
"We've gotta go," he indicated to Ray "Ray?"
"Yep, yep, Schwoz take care of Katelyn, remember her nap, it's in half an hour."
"Understood."
"Let's go".
And without further ado, the two headed towards the tubes so they could go to Henry's house.
As for Charlotte, Jasper and I, we walked to the elevator, got to Junk N' Stuff, and made our way to the Swellview Honey Factory so we could find the bee that flew into Henry's face and give him back his superpowers, you know, a normal, classic work day for a group of teenage helpers to a superhero and his sidekick... yeah.
(...)
After a long walk of about 20 minutes, we had arrived at the Honey Factory. Honestly, I had never been here before, but I must admit that the honey they made was very good.
Henryway, before crossing the factory door, Jasper handed Charlotte the two jars he had brought and ran to a corner, where he disappeared, going who knows where.
"I want to ask, but I won't".
I raised my eyebrows "believe me, I don't either, we have to go in".
We discreetly opened the door, making sure first there was no one around, when we noticed that there was no one. We ran all over the factory looking for the "crime scene", we went through every corner of it, every room, I even almost got stung by a bee, until we arrived at a place that was full of police tape, and everything was destroyed.
"It's here" I said with labored breathing, hey I had to escape from a bee, don't judge me "the bee must move very fast".
"And it has to be shiny" Charlotte assured, we both nodded "where is Jasper?".
"Up here!".
I furrowed my neck confused and looked up, there was a big hole where my friend was leaning out, oh my god.
"What the heck are you doing?" I asked shouting.
"Jasper! Come down now!" Charlotte ordered him.
"Just give me a minute" he answered hesitantly.
I rolled my eyes "what's the problem?".
"It's much higher than I thought it would be".
"Then come down and go through the door!" my friend continued.
"No!" he reproached "I want to make a cool entrance like Henry!".
I knew it, I knew it would end like this!
It was not the time for Jasper to try become a hero, and I say this because ever since he helped save Ray and Henry from the giant guy who was talking to a towel, he would proudly repeat "I'm a superhero" thousands and thousands of times, and he still does it to this day.
But now he was starting to get on my nerves, we didn't have time for this.
"Jasper!" this time I shouted, "come down now and help us find that bee!".
"Fine!" he answered "Jaaasssppperrr Dunnnnnlo...!".
And before he could finish his shout entrance, Jasper jumped from the roof, landing on a pile of boxes, ow, that must have hurt. Charlotte and I watched him with argument as he got up from the ground.
"Sorry for... dropping in... like this" he put on a heroic pose, but I could tell from his face that he was in pain.
"Are you proud of yourself?" I asked him.
"Yes I am".
Char raised his arms dismissively "we just have to find the bee and go, okay?".
I nodded. My friend threw one of the jars to Jasper, and instead of falling into his arms catching it, it went straight to the ground where it broke into a thousand pieces.
"Was that for me?" the boy asked.
"No, it was for me" I answered sarcastically "of course it was for you, silly!".
He smiled in an innocent way "I'm sorry, the good thing is that I brought two jars".
"Amazing" sarcasm.
Nobody answered, Charlotte just shook her head, and then, we set out to find that bee. It was going to be a bit tricky since, well, the bee had to be moving practically at the speed of light, because it had Henry's superpowers, the only thing we had going for us was that it glowed, which would help us somewhat.
As if I had summoned the bee, a flash passed before my eyes, along with a buzzing sound, my friends also noticed, since we followed it with our eyes.
"Hey! Hey!" Jasper hit me on the arm "do you think that's the bee we're looking for?".
I looked at him with a face of 'really?' "Yeah, I'm pretty positive" I said obviously.
"Okay, oaky!" he answered, "Charlotte, give me the jar".
She handed the jar to Jasper, so he could then open it and start chasing the bee everywhere; he was just a few steps away from getting it, when out of nowhere, a policewoman came out from the back.
"Woah, woah, woah, this is a crime scene" she said with her coffee in hand "what are you three doing here?".
"Oh, uh..." Charlotte started to say.
She turned to look at me trying to ask for help, to which I responded by throwing my arms in the air while shaking my head, I couldn't think of anything.
"Uh... we're reporters" good one "we're reporters for the school newspaper at Swellview High".
The police stared at us with narrowed eyes, while I wished for everything that they would just believe us.
"Enough for me" she shrugged, I sighed in relief ". Listen I'm going to take a break, but the guys from the station lab aren't coming here yet, so if you touch any of this evidence, just throw it away because it's no longer useful".
I frowned confused "I don't think that's how evidence works".
"Still, it is".
Charlotte and I turned to look at each other, driven, it was obvious that this wasn't how evidence worked, but it doesn't matter. The police left the room leaving us alone again.
"Good excuse, huh," I acknowledged.
"Thanks," she smiled. "Jasper! Did you catch the bee yet?"
"Shhhh!" he exclaimed, who was in a strange position. "I got it."
I turned to where I was looking, and just as expected, the bee was standing on one of the containers. Jasper came a little closer, and just when I thought he would slowly approach it so he could catch it, he threw the jar into the container instead.
"Are you serious?!" The jar broke.
Jasper turned to look at us with a blank face. "I really thought that would work."
"Throwing a jar at a bee?" Charlotte asked him.
"Yeah," he answered incredulously. "Do you have more jars?"
"No!"
There was a buzzing sound again, the bee flew past our eyes again, only this time it sounded upset.
"Oh no! I think I made it angry" Jasper shrieked as he hid behind Charlotte to use her as a human shield.
"Hey, let me go!" she complained.
"No! It can smell my fear!" Charlotte managed to get him off of her.
But it didn't even take two seconds for him to use me as a shield now.
"Jasper! Get off of me!" I yelled at him, but he didn't move "I'm serious!".
We were moving back and forth, me trying to get him off me, and him "protecting" himself from the bee, which was simply useless. We had been like that for several seconds, which seemed like an eternity, while the bee kept flying around, when suddenly, it came towards us.
I quickly ducked down and managed to avoid it, only it had fallen into Jasper's mouth. As best I could, I got up and put my hand on his mouth to prevent him from opening it.
"Agh! Ah! Mhhhmmmm! MMMMMMMHHHHMMMMMM!" he complained.
"Do you have it?" Charlotte asked, I nodded "okay."
"Jasper, Jasper, Jasper, look at me, look at me," he had stopped complaining, his breathing was labored and his gaze reflected stress. "Look at me, you, you are the jar now."
The boy opened his eyes wide, as long as he didn't swallow it, he was fine. And the bee was fine.
Charlotte helped me by walking backwards, since I hadn't taken my hand out of Jasper's mouth so that the bee wouldn't escape, and as best we could, we managed to get out of the honey factory with the bee in Jasper's mouth... great.
