Chapter 14: Herby
"What are you doing here? And with the... little animal."
"Oh," she said, turning to look at the raccoon, "are you talking about Herby?"
I raised my eyebrows and crossed my arms, "so you named him."
"Yes," he laughed, "he's a nice friend, we share cake."
Henry raised his hands in the air with a big smile on his face, although you could really see that he was tired, his eyes looked reddish that they blinked again and again, the face he had was 'helpful', his skin looked pale and her lips were too dry. Anyone who didn't know what he was going through would think he was dying.
"Are you okay?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Why shouldn't I be?" he responded rhetorically. "I spent my entire birthday in a place I didn't want to be, in a place full of blood, with the most idiotic criminal in Swellview, to get home to eat." the most delicious cake in the world and finding a raccoon eating my slice" he paused "I'm fantastic."
"You don't have to use sarcasm with me," I said as I got closer to him, but at a distance considered by the raccoon, "I can tell how you're feeling."
He snorted "Yes, of course, my 17th birthday, a complete disaster."
"Henry," I moved a little closer, "you still have a few hours left today, all is not lost."
My friend got up from the chair where he was sitting and walked a little towards where I was. I hadn't realized that his hair was messy. I mean, he didn't always wear his hair as combed as when he wore the Kid Danger suit, but he didn't always wear it. I combed his hair so much, if it was messy, it was most likely because of the blood bank.
"For me this is ruined," he told me, clicking his tongue, "so there's nothing else to do."
"It's only 7," I let out a mocking laugh. "Stop being so dramatic, your family and friends are outside."
"Why don't they come in?"
"Herby," I answered, pointing to 'Herby', "they sent me to get him out, so we have to get him out."
"But he's my new friend and..."
"Henry," I interrupted him, "he is a wild animal, he needs to leave, he won't be able to live his entire life in your refrigerator."
"But I can tame him and..." I crossed my arms and gave him a 'really' look.
She let out a sigh, crossed her arms like she always does, and put one of his hands on his nose.
"Okay," he agreed, "I can grab it with my quick reflexes and throw it out the door."
"Harsh," I responded, "but I like it, okay, I'll open the door."
"Alright, go to the door, I'll let you know when I'm ready."
I nodded. I walked to the door, grabbed the knob and then threw it open.
"Ready?" I asked in a shout.
"Yep," he answered in the same way.
From afar I could see how Henry approached Herby, he said cute things to him, things to get close to him, he looked cute, the truth is, I'm talking about Henry, he looked very cute making funny faces and strange noises.
Henry wasn't ugly at all, in fact he was one of the most handsome people in the school, and he could tell that because almost all the girls were behind him. Of course, mentioning Chloe, Bianca, the Veronica girl from the wild dogs, something like that, I wasn't here, at any time that Henry went out with them, I was here. But what does it matter, all of them would have no reason not to like Henry, I mean, he is every teenager's crush in Swellview... not him, Kid Danger... basically him.
"Ready?" Henry took me out of my thoughts. "Kai? Kai! Run, I've got it."
And said and done, my friend already had Herby in his hands, a little away from his face, since he was moving like crazy.
"Move!"
I felt like a gray cloud was passing by me, brushing my head, moving desperately, making strange noises. No more raccoon.
"Yeah!" I celebrated by raising my arms in the air "you did it!"
"We did it!".
Henry ran up to me and did what I least expected to receive today, he hugged me, I don't know how he did it but he managed to lift me just a little off the ground by hugging me.
"Happy birthday, Henry," I said, still in his arms.
"Happy birthday to me," he replied smiling, "really thank you, Kai, this made my day better, I had already forgotten about Jeff and..."
"Ah, no, no," I interrupted him, letting go of the hug, "don't think about that anymore, you only have a few hours left on your birthday, be happy."
He gave me a smile "you're right, thank you, I love you very much."
And without waiting for it again, he gave me a hug again.
"Me too, Henry, me too."
