"Crybaby "
...You seem to replace
Your brain with your heart
You take things so hard
And then you fall apart...
For as long as Hannah could remember, she'd been the crybaby. The weird girl who'd either blow up or fall apart at every cruel thing you said or did. But it's not like she didn't have plenty of reasons to.
...You try to explain
But before you can start
Those cry baby tears
Come out of the dark...
No one ever stood up for her against bullies. No one ever listened to her. At least not at first. And being that alone as a five year old was awful. Being sheltered and not knowing why her teachers and peers never did anything about it was even worse...
...Someone's turning the handle
To that faucet in your eyes
They're pouring out
Where everyone can see...
Being shunned and ignored by everyone hurt. They'd change games as soon as she wanted to play and wouldn't stop until she got the hint. Since she was slow socially-- especially at that age-- it always took awhile for that time happen. It really was no wonder she grew clingy of new friends years later, all things considered.
...Your heart's too big for your body
It's why you won't fit inside
They're pouring out
Where everyone can see...
The fact that the teachers ignored her too and didn't step in until she goes ISS for throwing a fit, something every kid did, hurt even worse than that somehow. As did her getting in trouble and excluded for an assignment because she did the coloring first cause it was easier and no said she couldn't. No one even explained why she was in trouble or why she couldn't do the assignment anymore. No explained to the 5 year old why she couldn't finish the ' Me 100 years later' assignment like her else in her class. Just another thing that made her stand out. She ended up getting medicated that year as a result of her lack of an attention span & tantrums.. At 5 years old. The adults didn't get any better after that & only ever made things worse.
...They call you cry baby, cry baby
But you don't fucking care...
After being made to cry on the 2nd day of school during her freshman year, Hannah decided that she needed to toughened up before they turned her into another Hannah Baker.
...Cry baby, cry baby
So you laugh through your tears...
They loved to call her that. Among other things. School shooter, freak, cry baby, and Hannah Montana all came to mind. But they weren't the only ones they called her and her mind had become a dark and horrible place because of it. But the name calling and degradation of her mind hadn't been a new development. It had happened ages ago. All because of these horrible, horrible adults and children who couldn't stand her being who she was.
...Cry baby, cry baby
'Cause you don't fucking care...
She had to toughen up and train herself to be more normal. More confident and responsible. Less temperamental. She had to train herself to become funnier and to ignore her bad thoughts. Had to train herself to stop caring so much and ignore the harsh words that were thrown at her. It wasn't an easy thing to do...
...Tears fall to the ground
You just let them drop
You just let them drop
Cry baby, cry baby...
But she didn't have a choice. She had to-- for her own sanity and for her past selves' sake. As well as her future self, if she even made it to the future that is
She really didn't think she was strong enough to but then again, her past selves hadn't think they could either but they did. So she had to stay strong for all of them.
...You're all on your own and
You lost all your friends...
For her 5 year old self who got manipulated into giving her snacks, crayons, and money away for some temporary friends. For the 5 year old who was unfairly medicated against her will and humiliated repeatedly.
...You told yourself that
It's not you, it's them...
For her 8 year old self who had to deal with the fact that her classmate didn't want to admit that they had watched a movie together at the movie theater and had sat together & talked all about it during the flim. For the 8 year old who cried about all of it to her grandmother in the little trailer they lived in when she got home from school. For the 8 year old who had to deal with being labeled a lying, retarded, smelly, ugly liar by everyone because of it.
...You're one of a kind
And no one understands...
For the 9 year old who wondered why her parents weren't together anymore and why she couldn't see her dad. For the 9 year old who had to wonder why her mama didn't love her as she was and why she was always yelled at while her sister got a way with everyone.
...But those cry baby tears
Keep coming back again...
For the 10 year old who's bestfriend lied about her vampire gang wanting to kill her in an attempt to get her to stop being her friend. For the 10 year old who felt a wave of heart break stronger than any before and made a scene about before spending her entire fall/spring break crying about it. About the loss of her best and only friend who'd she never trust again after that, even after they made up at school after break was over. Their friendship wasn't the same after that. Niether was Hannah.
...Someone's turning the handle
To that faucet in your eyes
They're pouring out
Where everyone can see...
For her 10 year old self who was repeatedly told she looked and acted like a boy by her peers and mother. For the 10 year old who had breakdowns over their insults and the constant misgendering of her.
...Your heart's too big for your body
It's where your feelings hide...
For her 12 year old self who got accused of sleeping with/having a crush on every single of her friends regardless of their gender. For the 12 year old who didn't know about the rumors that were being spread about her until years after the fact.
...They're pouring out
Where everyone can see...
For her 13 year old self who had to deal with so much shit and so many people trying to change her even though there was nothing wrong with her. Far more shit than she even should have had to deal with at her age.
...They call you cry baby, cry baby
But you don't fucking care
Cry baby, cry baby
So you laugh through your tears...
For the 13 year old who was a verbal punching bag for her very toxic friend who manipulated her into doing a ton of shit she never wanted to do. For the 13 year old who got bullied by her friend for a month for repeating what her bestfriend told everyone. For the 13 year old who stopped drawing because she was embarrassed by it after her friend insulted some of her best work in front of her bully, calling it a 'kindergartener painting '.
...Cry baby, cry baby
'Cause you don't fucking care
Tears fall to the ground
You just let them drop
Cry baby, cry baby
You just let them drop
Cry baby, cry baby
You just let them drop...
For the 14 year old who was too scared to go to highschool for the first time. For the 14 year old who got humiliated by a bully who butted into her conversation uninvited and made her cry infront of the whole class by getting them to call her a school shooter.
...I look at you and I see myself
And I know you better
Than anyone else...
For every sleepless night her younger selves had to endure. For every tear every version of her had ever shed. For every version of her who wanted to die but was too scared to try.
...And I have the same faucet in my eyes..So your tears are mine...
For current self who was more broken than she'd ever care to admit. For all the lies she'd told trying to fit in and for every time she had, had to fold to a teacher who was abusing their power in fear of getting in trouble.
...They call me cry baby, cry baby
But I don't fucking care
Cry baby, cry baby
How I laugh through my tears...
She wasn't gonna be a crybaby anymore. She wasn't gonna let herself be pushed around, ignored, and erased any longer. She was gonna stand her ground and fight back (verbally), even if it killed her--- because she had to. Hannah had been a pushover all her life but that was over now. Now she had to be strong and hope that it would all be worth in the end. Whenever that was.
...Cry baby, cry baby
'Cause I don't fucking care
Tears fall to the ground
I just let them drop
Cry baby, cry baby
I just let them drop
Cry baby, cry baby
You just let them drop
They call you cry baby, cry baby
I just let them drop
Cry baby, cry baby
You just let them drop...
