Chapter 2: Running Errands for Strangers
As I walked into the library, I scanned the large room for the two printers. They were pretty easy to find, as there was a small crowd of students frantically printing assignments last-minute before their classes started. I shouldered my way past the crowd, spotting the papers the young man asked me to grab for him. I mentally face-palmed myself, realizing I never even asked for his name as he left. I muttered a string of colorful curses as I wove my way back out of the crowd, remembering that I was really bad at being a social butterfly. I couldn't even ask a guy what his name was because I was that forgetful. A small ping from my left pocket of my hoodie rang as I received a new message from an unidentified number. I pulled out my phone, glancing at it before opening the message and sitting down at a nearby table. The message read:
Number: Hi, it's that guy you bumped into the hall. You might seem confused as to why I have your number. Your friend in PG gave it to me. Got the papers?
My heart jumped at the fact that he knew my number before I read the entire text. I figured it was a kid named Tess who gave him my number. I had befriended her on the first day of school. Quirky, fun, and an extreme extrovert, Tess was just the person I needed in my sad, boring life to cheer me up. She often tried getting me a date, so I guessed that when the guy asked for my number, she jumped at the chance. What can I say, she is a lovely and extroverted human date-maker and I'm a boring introvert who likes books and cats who needs a guy in their life.
Erica: Hi there, I'm guessing Tess gave you my number? Haha, that extroverted woman. Yes, I got the papers. Also, I know this is really stupid of me, but I never even asked for your name.
Number: Haha, yeah it was Tess. And my name is John. John Peters, like the farmer.
Erica: Omg, you listen to Nightvale?
John: Yeah, it's pretty weird but super cool. Too bad my name is kinda a meme there lol
Erica: lol, I'll be over at PG in a few mins. TTYL <3
I really didn't know why I put a heart at the end of the text, but it was too late to fix it now. Plus, he listened to my favorite podcast, which gave me a reason to fall for him anyways. I stuffed my phone into my pocket, and grabbed the papers. As I left the library, I noticed a dark figure walking behind me, around twenty feet behind. I walked a little faster, and darted into the classroom. That was weird. I looked around for John, and spotted him leaning on the wall, talking to Tess. I ran up to him, holding out the papers.
"These ones, right?" I asked breathlessly, waving them in front of him.
John nodded. "Yep, thanks. I was just telling Tess about how apparently we both have a lot of similar interests, and she whispered that you and I are a perfect couple."
I chuckled. "Oh Tess, what did I tell you about forcing people to like me for my own good?"
"I know, I know. But you two would be cute together. Admit it!" Tess said excitedly.
I snorted, and John laughed. He looked down at his watch. "Nine thirty. You're here on time, so here's your reward." John handed me a small envelope.
"Oh! Thank you, but it was just a small favor. I-I don't need anything in return." I stammered, but he clamped my hands around the envelope.
"Take it. You'll thank me later." John said, smiling.
"Okay, whatever you say. I'll open it later though. Let's get to class." I replied, rolling my eyes.
