Sheheryar's POV:

Time flies without wings. No sane person can deny this fact. Days become weeks, weeks become months, it all happens before our eyes and no matter much we try well cannot stop it.

It has been a month since I take custody of kids and now life has become more lively for me because of them. It took me time to get used to the change in my daily routine. It was hectic, especially during weekdays but I am not bothered by it.

After almost ten days of taking their custody, I moved with them to my old house, to my old city. First, handling kids and making them useful to my house wasn't an easy job but with the help of their grandparents, I managed. They often come to visit us, since their current residence isn't very far from here. Before leaving I tried to contact Fiza so she could meet the kids but she wasn't responding to my calls. On contacting her Chachu, I came to know that her brother has taken her out of the country. The news surprised me a bit because of the problems going on between her and Ehtesham. But I didn't try to inquire how their relationship was going or it is ended since it wasn't my place.

After coming home, the first two days were quite difficult, more than I have imagined. Every corner of the house reminds me of Umaima and Safina. I have done a few changes in my bedroom but Safina's room is still as it was in her life to remind me what have I lost. Soon the haunted memories were subsided and the responsibility of Sadaf and Taha occupied my mind. Finding a maid for them to find a suitable school for Sadaf, all was done by the Secretary's wife help. So now, everything is going fine with Sadaf, she even makes new friends in school but Taha has become silent. He has changed a lot since they move in with me. He starting to get irritated with everything, he even stops eating properly and relies on milk most of the time. Their maid usually keeps him busy with toys and colouring, which have become his favourite hobby and the walls of my house are proof of it. But when he is not in the mood, he searches for Fiza. When he couldn't find her he starts to cry, until his mind completely turns to his other favourite things or Fiza talks to him. I called Fiza's Chachu after coming here and ask him to give her my landline number if she wants to keep in touch with kids and she did. Even from far, her suggestions helped the maid to handle Taha. But he was still far from his usual self, I often thought of sending him to school too, it might help him to settle in a new environment but again, I wasn't sure.

I was hoping for some suggestions from Fiza on this, but she avoids talking to me. That's why she only calls on the home landline number, on weekdays during my office time. After hearing of Fiza and Ehtesham's divorce from the kids' grandmother, everything became clear. Of course, she would be depressed right now and feel awkward talking to a man.

Even knowing that their marriage wasn't stable from the start I wasn't expecting it to end. I thought sooner or later Ehtesham would realize Fiza's qualities and things will eventually start fitting into the right places. There were times when a thought surfaces in my mind that Fiza gave up because of the kids but I shrugged it off every time. Perhaps I didn't want to think that she was clinging to Ehtesham because of kids. Still, I sometimes found myself thinking about her and worrying about her. Maybe somewhere deep in my heart I feel guilty for separating Fiza and kids and it only increases my respect for her, she really is one of those people who deserve to be respected. Her sense of responsibility and her caring nature cannot go without seeing. I wonder sometimes, why Ehtesham was unable to see her qualities? Who would find such a woman these days?

"MAMO..." My chain of thoughts broke when I heard Sadaf screaming while rushing towards me, with my phone in her hand.

I quickly put the TV remote aside and took the phone from her.

"Thank you." I smiled before taking the call.

"Hello?"

"Hello, Assalam o Alaikum?" I heard Fiza's hesitant voice and a strange wave of serenity washed over me, leaving me unable to respond instantly.

"Hello? Sheheryar Sahab (Mr. Sheheryar)?"

"Yes? How are you Fiza?"

There was a moment of silence and then I heard her voice confirming that she was fine. Making me realize that I had called her name without any honorific, which sounds inappropriate.

"Good...how is everyone else?" I couldn't find a way to cover it up.

After the formal greetings, she said apologetically. "I hope kids aren't causing any trouble."

They are my niece and nephew Fiza!

I wanted to remind her that they aren't her responsibility, therefore she doesn't have to worry about them but I restrain myself from it. I cannot be that cruel to say such things while knowing how much she loves the kids and how she was devoted to them. I wish I could find a way to help these three.

"They aren't any trouble at all so you don't have to worry and you can talk to them if you like."

Because that's the reason behind the call!

"I am grateful that you allow me to keep in touch with them."

"What are you saying, why would I stop you. They are your kids too."

"They aren't." She said with a sad chuckle and I inhale a deep breath on hearing her words.

"Look-"

"I call you to talk about Taha." She didn't let me finish, "Sadaf told me that he cried the whole night yesterday."

"Yes, I... promised him before coming here that I will take him to you and he cries whenever he recalls it." I said massaging my temples.

"...it's not right to make promises that cannot be kept." She said after a pause.

"Hm, I have learned my lesson."

There was a moment of awkward silence between us.

"Where are kids? Can I talk to them?"

"Sadaf! Come here." I called Sadaf, who was reaching to remote to switch the channel.

"Ji (Yes)?"

"Come here. Someone wants to talk to you."

She quickly ran over me and settled herself on my lap holding the phone. I laughed when she squeals hearing Fiza's voice.

"MAMO, it's Tai Ami." She told me excitedly and I nodded in acknowledgement.

While talking, Sadaf puts her head on my chest and I leaned back pinching her cheeks lightly.
Sadaf asked Fiza when she was coming to meet her and I couldn't help myself from lowering my head to hear her answer.

"I will come soon, dear. How is Taha? Where he is?" She quickly changed the topic.

Sadaf abruptly jumped from my lap and ran outside the room, probably to Taha. I also got up and follow her.

~*~

"Taha, take it out from your mouth." Taha took several steps away from me as I reached out to take the colour pencil out of his mouth.

"You will have a stomach ache," I said getting up from the sofa to hold him and he ran away shaking his head in negative.

"Taha come here." I also ran behind him. He starts a strange habit of chewing colour pencils lately and no matter how much we stop him he won't listen. Once I hid all the pencils he used to colour with but then he attacks Sadaf's stationery, which causes a war between them.

"Taha you will fall." I scooped him into my arms when he tries to jump from the couch. He wiggles to get free, I held him firmly and take out the pencil from his mouth. He chewed the end of the pencil and now his mouth was the same blue colour as the pencil.

"Taha your mouth whole mouth is blue. Should I tell your Ami that you chew pencil again?" I asked him strictly and start walking towards the bathroom to wash his mouth. But it wasn't easy as I thought since he wouldn't open his mouth. After trying really hard I gave up because he starts to cry, I was worrying that he would swallow the things he has in his mouth.

"Taha be a good boy and open your mouth. I will give you chocolate." I tried once again but he didn't open his mouth.

Defeated by a toddler I walk back to the living room where Sadaf was still busy colouring a card for her teacher. I took my phone and call Fiza.

"Hello Assalam o Alaikum." I heard Fiza's voice.

"Wallaikum Assalam. Do you have a moment there is something you really need to see."

"Oh, okay." She sounds confused.

"Good, I'll video call you," I said and hung up.

"Beta, now you will open your mouth for sure," I mumbled holding Taha firmly so he won't slip from my arms and call Fiza from freehand.

"Here is your beloved." As she accepts the call I show her Taha's face. A gasp escaped her mouth as he sees the blue mouth alien in my arms.

"Taha, beta (child) what did you eat?" She asked regaining her composure but Taha didn't answer. He keeps staring at Fiza, then slowly move his hands and hold the phone in my hand.

"Ami!" He said.

"I won't talk to you until you wash your mouth." She told him in a scolding tone.

"Mamo." Taha turns his face to me dropping all the pieces of pencil upon me.

"TAHA." Both Fiza and I say in unison.

"Tch! Excuse us for a few moments, please. He ruined both his and my clothes." I said to Fiza and she nodded in response.

"Sadaf comes here, take the phone." She came rushing towards me and happily start talking to her.

I hardly manage to wash Taha's mouth and change his clothes, as he kept trying to run for the phone and finally after struggling for three long minutes I succeed. As promised Fiza talk to him quite long and he kept promising her every second thing she says. It also gives me the chance to hide all the pencils while he was talking, later I sat near the kids to hear their sweet conversation. Don't know when my eyes start to feel heavy and before I know it, the sleep took over me.
