Chapter Thirty-nine: You could sell our souls for a chili dog

"No."

It was finally lunch time and my friends and I decided to have ours at an eatery nearby. We did this a lot last year, but we haven't this year so I brought it up and they all eagerly agreed.

Leyla missed first period because she said her alarm clock was broken and her room was in a complete mess. It didn't make sense to her because she said last night everything was just fine. She said her younger brother was still at that boarding school he was sent to. She said her parents wouldn't be back until later today and the only person who was in the house was Lilian, her maid. And Lilian denied stepping foot into her room except to wake her up when she overslept. I believed it couldn't possibly be Lilian when she knew she was going to clean it. I told Leyla it was probably one of her sleepwalking episodes, although she hadn't had one in a while.

Anyways, Zane was still nowhere to be found. And Axel was still keeping his distance, luckily. I was going to talk to him later, but I was too stressed to right now. I just wanted to eat with my friends. That was until they decided on Tate's.

"Why?"

"I don't want to go there. Why don't we go to that place Xander and I tried? They make some pretty good chili cheese dogs."

Xander's eyes lit up instantly.

Zahra rolled her eyes. "You could sell our souls for a chili dog."

"Uh..obviously."

"So... The restaurant I don't know the name yet is it?"

"Char come on... Tate's food is so good." Kai whined.

'I don't wanna go to Tate's.' I whined in my head.

"Let's vote." Leyla suggested.

"What- why?"

"Because it's fair that way. All who want to go to Tate's raise your hand." Zahra, Kai and Leyla raised their hands.

"All who want to go to-" I cut her off. "There's really no point."

Xander crossed his arms. "This is why Char is my favorite."

She tried to touch his shoulder, but he swatted her hand away. "Oh would you stop being a big baby."

"Just so you know, the three of you are paying. Char and I would not."

"Leyla pays all the time anyways." Kai commented.

"The day my pockets go dry, you all will see." She rolled her eyes.

"Ok fine, I'll pay today." Kai offered.

Then Xander grabbed my shoulders and started pushing me to the car as we both grumbled about chili cheese dogs. Even though I knew the reason I didn't want go was way bigger than that.

"So as you guys know Zahra and I are dating."

No one looked surprised, but I had to ask, "Why do you think we knew?"

"I kinda figured it out when Xander came to ask us to go on a double date with him. At first, I thought he was talking about with you, and my head kind of split." Zahra teased.

Xander and I laughed so hard. "Me? And Xander? Not happening."

"At all."

"Okay, okay. We get it guys. You can stop laughing now." Leyla commented.

"Anyways... Can we skip the whole 'friends don't date each other so you won't have to choose who you'll support when it all goes downhill' thing?"

"I wasn't even going to start it." I mentioned. "So..tell us how it came about." I gestured to where they were sitting.

"But before that." Xander pointed out. "One rule."

"What?" Zahra snapped at him.

"No excess display of affection."

"Like this?" She asked before she grabbed Kai and kissed him deeply. When they released each other, he just looked very dazed while she smiled widely at Xander who had his eyebrows raised. "Yes. Like that."

"Not happening." She replied cheekily, before turning to me. "We told each other how we felt and I asked him to be my boyfriend and he said yes. Simple."

"You asked him?" Leyla's jaw dropped.

She shrugged. "Yeah. Is that a problem?"

"Of course not." I replied. "Girl power, baby!" I high-fived her over the table.

"It's not girl power. She just asked me before I could ask her." Kai debated.

"It's cos you were too much of a coward." I teased him.

"Shut up!" He grumbled.

"You guys are in love." Leyla cooed.

"So is Char." Xander pointed out.

I rolled my eyes. "I'm not in love with anyone or anything, but my chili dogs."

Xander scoffed. "Oh please. Tell us you're in love with Zane."

I turned to them. Literally, Zahra, Kai and Leyla because Xander was beside me. "I'm in love with Zane." I deadpanned.

"We know." They all said in unison.

My mouth dropped. "Then why did you want me to say it?"

"Because I expected it to be harder than that." Xander said with creased brows.

"So you wanted to argue with me?"

"Pretty much." He shrugged.

I punched his shoulder. "Nincompoop."

"So, when are you two going to start dating?" Zahra asked enthusiastically.

My eyes seemed to find the table more interesting. "He doesn't see me that way."

"Of course he does. You'd be blind not to notice it."

"I tried to see it, but I think I'm just his friend. And since he doesn't really have that much female friends, he's just really nice to the ones he has. I don't want to misinterpret anything."

"But-" Kai tried to input, but I cut him off. "Can we not talk about this? Please."

"Fine." Zahra muttered. "Let's talk about that hot guy in the black slim fitted turtle neck that's checking Leyla out."

I didn't bother turning because Zahra found everybody hot.

"He's not checking me out, he's checking Charvi out." Leyla mentioned.

"Trust me, if a hot guy is checking someone here out, it's not me." I snorted. "Plus, he can only see the back of my head."

"He's diagonal to us, so he can also see the side of your face."

Xander rolled his eyes. "Someone should go over there and tell him every girl here is taken so he should tuck his balls back in."

"Xander..." I groaned. "He's probably just interested in Leyla, not trying to get into her pants."

"He's looking at Charvi."

"What does it even matter? When we leave here, we won't even see him again."

"You haven't even see his face to see if you're interested in him." Zahra pointed out.

"I'm pretty sure I won't be." I said in a 'duh' tone. "Can we stop talking about some random dude?

"You mean some random dude that's coming over here?"

"He's probably going to the bathroom."

I heard footsteps, then I heard them stop. I traced my friends' eyes to the random dude who just stopped beside me, who I figured out was not random at all.

He was wearing a black slim fitted turtle neck like Zahra said, black jeans and boots. He looked like him, but different.

"Jaxon?" I choked out.

Way to be smooth!

The guy smiled. "No, I'm Jayden, Jaxon's brother. Nice to meet you."

He stretched his hand, but I just stared at him. He had an uncanny resemblance to Jaxon. Jaxon had a brother? "I get it. You're cautious, but don't be. I'm friendly."

"How do you know her?" Xander asked.

His eyes flashed to Xander's. "Jaxon has told me a lot about her."

"Please, who is this Jaxon?" Zahra asked.

"Some guy I met a few months ago." I brushed off.

"Do you have more secret friends we don't know about, Charvi?" Xander pressed.

"He's not a secret friend. He's not even my friend."

"Then why did your brother tell you a lot about her?" Xander asked him, but Jayden just shrugged.

"How could you recognize me? I've never seen you before."

"I've seen a picture of you."

"From where?"

"Jaxon."

Okay, so now he has pictures of you now.

Oh Lord! What have I gotten myself into? This is not good. I need to see Zane, right now. Maybe I should call him.

"Okay..." I trailed off.

"Isn't that-?" I cut Xander off. "We should probably go now. Lunch is almost over. It was so nice to meet you Jayden." I smiled at him. He smiled back. He looked younger than Jaxon. He was probably our age.

"Well.." I gestured for my friends to get up even though we weren't done eating.

"I'll go pay." Kai said before he walked away.

Jayden waved at me before walking away.

We walked out of the restaurant and waited for Kai at Xander's car. We only took one car because the rest wasn't really necessary.

"You always get the hot ones." Leyla complained.

"No I don't. I don't got him."

"Yeah. She's got his brother. I mean he's keeping pictures of you when you said he wasn't your friend." Zahra said

"You guys should stay here. I'm going to start the car." Xander said, before he started dragging me with him.

"You said you'll start the car, not us."

He didn't reply as he dragged me to the car and literally forced me into the passenger's seat before going around to sit in his.

He turned to me with an angry expression. "Char... Is there anything you'd like to tell me?"

I thought for a while. "Not that I know of."

"Char, I'm serious."

"So am I."

"Who are Jaxon and Jaylo?"

"His name is Jayden."

"I don't care. Who are they?"

"I met Jayden today, I swear."

"What about Jaxon?" He pressed.

I hesitated. "He's some guy I met a few months ago that hit on me." It was the truth. I didn't lie, I just left something out.

"Is he stalking you?"

"What?"

"Is he stalking you?" He said, slower.

I thought about it. I don't think so.

"How you supposed to know if a guy is stalking you?" I shrugged.

"When his brother comes to say he has a picture of you when I'm sure you didn't give him any."

"Social media." I offered.

"We both know you haven't posted anything in like forever."

"Why would anyone be stalking me Xander? You're making a big deal out of nothing."

"Am not. There are serious cases that deal with obsession. We watched Secret Obsession last month on Netflix. Don't tell me you forgot."

I didn't forget.

I rolled my eyes. "That's just a movie, Xander."

"It is not just a movie. Goodness, Char! If anything were to happen to you, what am I supposed to do?"

I smiled at him. "I love you, Xander. We've been best friends since I can remember. I'm not going anywhere."

"You better not. We have to stick some sense into our friend's heads. Especially that bull-headed Zahra."

"Kai's got himself a handful." I joked.

After our friends entered, we headed back to school talking about random stuff.

******************

The day went pretty well. That was until, school ended and Axel came up to me as I was putting things into my locker. Leyla had just left, and so had Kai and Zahra. I didn't think Xander had gone.

"Can we talk now?" He asked.

I slammed my locker shut. "I'm busy."

"With what? School's over."

"I have to go drop my sister at her ballet class."

"That's close to our houses. Can you meet me at mine?"

"I don't think that's a good idea." I said as I started walking out of school.

He joined me. "But I need to talk to you, Charvi. Just tell Xander or Kai or whoever is taking you that I'll take you."

"I'm driving myself."

"You have a car? Great. So what time would you be there?"

"Axel..." I trailed off.

"You ready Char?" Reveka called as she came to walk beside me, then she finally took in Axel. "Hey, you."

"Hey." He turned back to me. "Please Char."

I hesitated. "Fine."

He seemed surprised. "Really?"

"15 minutes to say whatever the hell you want to say and I'm out."

"Yes. That's fine." He replied, before walking the other way to where he parked his car in the lot.

Reveka gave me a questioning look.

"Long story."

"Shorten it." She said as she got into the car. I walked around and entered the other side.

"Okay." I turned to her. "Leyla loves Axel. I made a deal with him to spend time with her in exchange for me tutoring him. He asked her to be his girlfriend to supposedly make me jealous. Then, he told me he loved me and he tried to kiss me and she saw. She was pissed at me, but then she forgave me."

"He told you he loves you?"

"Yup." I started the car.

"And you didn't kick him where the sun don't shine?"

"Why would I do that?"

"You cried for a week when he put an end to your 13 years friendship because of some stupid excuse about his friends thinking you're a creep. And now he's telling you he loves you?"

"That was four years ago, Rev."

"And people change?" She asked, trying to predict my excuse.

"I'm being mature."

"Maturity is not an excuse for putting up with his bullshit. He freaking used your best friend."

"I am not putting up with his bullshit, Rev. I'm just hearing him out. 15 minutes and I'm out. So he can finally leave me alone."

"Fine." She crossed her arms. "But if he tries nonsense, I'm going to a store to fetch a gun."

"You're not old enough and you can't afford it, but thanks for caring."

She didn't reply and I started driving.
