Chapter 4
It was about an hour before Michael had been able to calm Devin down enough so that his sobs were only whimpers and there was less of a death grip on his clothes. Only once he was calm enough did he gently ask Devin. "Did you have a nightmare?"
The five-year-old nodded tearfully before burying his face in Michael's shirt.
"What was it about?" He realized that he had said the wrong thing when Devin burst into tears once more. "Hey, shh, it's alright, you don't have to talk about it if you don't want."
Devin nodded against his chest, calming down after a little bit. Once Devin was calm, Michael decided to take the little one to his office. He wasn't going to leave him alone after the nightmare he had just had. Devin seemed to have no objections to this as he looked around the office in amazement, seeming to have forgotten about his nightmare for now.
Michael sat down at his desk and placed Devin in his lap. The little incubus looked at his desk and all the papers in interest, leaning forward to take hold of one of the fancier looking pens. Chuckling lightly at the sight, Michael gently pried the pen out of his hands and put it to the side. He then moved Devin so the younger could look at him from where he was sitting.
Looking at him, Michael took a deep breath. He might as well tell him now before Devin started asking about his mother.
"Hey Devin?"
Devin looked up at him curiously.
"You know how I said I was going to look into finding your mother?" To Michael's great surprise, Devin started shaking, his bottom lip quivering. "Devin?" The little boy didn't respond, he just hid his face with his tiny little wings for a moment before gathering himself. "What you find out?"
"Well I did find out who your mother was exactly, but I also found something else out." Michael looked Devin directly in the eye before saying. "I have to ask you a very important question before I tell you what else I found out, alright Devin?"
Devin looked confused but nodded anyway. Michael took another deep breath before he asked. "Devin, how would you feel if I told you I was your dad?"
Devin's eyes went wide. It was clear that it hadn't escaped his five-year-old mind what that could mean. He stared at Michael in shock.
"Huh?"
Michael sighed before telling him. "We did some bloodwork, and it turns out, I'm your dad, surprise!" While he tried to sound excited, you could hear the nervousness in his voice about Devin's full reaction to this.
Devin was still for a moment, his wings not even daring to move before suddenly his arms wrapped around a surprised devil's torso. Michael stared down at the little boy in shock for a moment before smiling as this was a much better reaction than the one he was expecting.
