Whats Your Name?
This happened to me literally a few hours ago. It's gonna be kinda short, but it really fucked me up.
Background Info: I was working back window where we take your order and you pay before you pull forward. At this time we were getting one car every few minutes so we were super slow.
So this guy pulls up to my window, and he's paying, and I hear my headset beep, indicating that someone had pulled into my lane. I was busy helping the guy at my window, and it wasn't gonna take much longer so I was gonna finish up, and then answer my headset. After 15 seconds, I hear "Hello!" Come from the speaker. And you could tell from her tone that she was gonna cause problems. So I get on the headset and this is our interaction.
Me: Hi, I am so sorry about that wait. What can I get started for you?
Lady: *orders her food with seemingly no problems and I tell her to pull forward to pay*
Keep in mind, this lady was acting pissy for no reason. The level of attitude I was receiving from her was not validated for her having to wait 15 seconds for me to take her order because I was busy doing something.
Lady: *gets to my window and hands me her card* Hey what was taking you so long to take my order?
Me: Ya sorry about that, I was dealing with something at my window.
Lady: there's no need for you to have an attitude *whilst she is giving me a shitty attitude*
Me: I don't have an attitude Maam. *at this point I had a little bit of one, but nothing compared to her*
Lady: Ok but it's your job to say 'hey I'll be with you in a minute,' not just let us sit there.
Me: Maam, again, I was dealing with something at my window. I was busy, which is why I didn't answer immediately.
Lady: Whats your name? Give me your name!
Me: no I do not have to give you my name. I'm not giving you my name.
As I am handing her card back, she got physically aggressive with me. She snatched the card out of my hand, and flung her arm out so hard that she smacked it on the side of her door.
Lady: *starts driving away* suck ass bitch
Me: right back at you Maam
After she drove forward, I had to run up to the front of the store and make sure my manager knew to not give this lady my name. I had nothing to hide, but she was physically aggressive with me, and I don't know how far she would take it if she came back.
Someone please explain to me when it became socially acceptable to treat fastfood workers, or any humans in general, like this? Because that is what we are. We are humans. Not robots, not computers, humans. And this woman had kids in the car.
Anyone who goes to a fastfood restaurant needs to know that if you go through the drive thru, and we don't answer immediately, we are not ignoring you. We are not just chatting with our friends doing nothing. We have other shit to do to make sure the store is still running the way it's supposed to, and because we are so understaffed, a lot of the time each person is doing three peoples jobs. It's like if you walked into a store and there was a line. You have to wait your turn to checkout. It's the same in the drive thru. If you don't want to potentially wait five minutes from the time you get in the drive thru, to the time you get your food, then don't fucking come.
Don't bully and harass me, a 16 year old, for doing my job that I guarantee you would not last five minutes doing. I had to call my manager and check that I was legally allowed to refuse to give a customer my name, because rules at where I work are weird. This shit happens on the daily. Maybe not to this extreme, but it is still way too common, and I am so disappointed in what the world has turned into for so many people and places. Do better!
