"Canon" and what it means.

Today,we shall talk about the word "Canon".This is a common term seen in this fandom, and it is used a lot in arguments to prove a point.
Now there are two definitions to this word that will fit what I'm talking about.
1. A general law, rule, principle,or criterion by which something is judged.
2.The works of a particular author or artist that is considered genuine.
Today we will be focusing on a combination of the two for this particular chapter.
I,like many of you in this fandom, have seen the term "canon" used to boost arguments in this fandom. But from my observations, none of them use the term correctly.
Let's take the couple Alzack and Bisca. These two are what people in this fandom would consider "canon."Why?Well it is because they are married. They have a child together. They say "I love you" to each other.
Another example is Sherry and Ren.These two met during the Oracion Seis arc,and got engaged/married over the seven year time skip. This would also be considered "canon".
And for a popular ship so you all can understand better, let's use Gajeel and Levy.In the recent arc, before Gajeel and that fake ass death scene,Gajeel (knowing he was about to die) confessed his love and need to be with levy. They both told each other about how they wish to grow old together, and have children with each other. They, when knowing they wouldn't see each other again, declared their love for each other.
Now what do these ships have in common? All of the people in these ships have declared their love for the other person, and it is actually given back.In all of these ships, you can go back in the manga and find proof, actual proof, that they love each other. They have all said "I love you".They have all declared a desire to be with the other.
Now that we have a couple of examples under our belts, let get onto what "canon" actually means, and how it should be used.
People, when referring to a couple as canon, should not say it's canon based on what the person does.To elaborate,if a person does something you think "they would only do it for them",it does not make a ship canon. It makes it a likelihood of being "canon" more real, but it doesn't mean they are officially together.
I also see people in this fandom mix up "canon" and "non-canon".They use the term "canon" and try backing it up with:"It was set up from the beginning! The creator said so!"And it kind of makes me sick.
Remember this well."Take everything the creator says with a grain of salt."Remember, the author decides what becomes canon and what doesn't become canon. The author is human too,and humans are indecisive. And humans also have the ability to change their minds. It's a right every human has.If the author says one thing one day, then says another thing another day,it is completely acceptable.
The only time you should use the term "canon" is when you can go to the manga,go to a specific page, and show them actually being a couple.
You cannot come to me and tell me a couple is so called "canon" without a reliable source. And most of the time, people go off of what they hear from other people, and I hate it so much.
But as I said earlier, just because a person does something that you would deem as "special" and "something that they would do only for another character",doesn't make the ship canon.
Let's use Gruvia as an example.People use the base of this relationship as a main argument.I've already discussed why this wasn't ok,so I won't elaborate. But while trying to save a comrade,Gray helped Juvia see the sky for the first time. But I think that his feeling are only friendship wise only.Because while he does things that may seem like he loves her,I feel like he would do that for any of his friends.
NaLu,is another example.A lot of people see this as "canon",but there is a lot of things that I see wrong with this statement that I'll explain in another chapter. But when people use the term "canon",they believe that these two are going to be in a relationship.Pay attention to the word "going".
I see a lot of people say:"But they're going to be canon!","They are going to have a child together!","They are going to be married!"Going, going, going. That's a word indicating future tense, not present. That means it is not canon. They have not kissed. They have not said "I love you."They are not "canon".Going back to the definitions above,if the pair isn't genuinely together, they are not considered canon.
Again,I feel like the things Natsu and Lucy do for each other is something they would do for anyone. For example,in the Phantom Lord arc, when Lucy fell out of the tower,Natsu saved her.Natsu,as we know,is a heroic and wild person. He'll try to save anyone,no matter how crazy the situation was. That was how he was raised.I feel like this time and the many other times he saved Lucy and vise versa,is something they would do regardless, because they are friends. And no friend wants to see another die.I'll elaborate it in another chapter, but for now,I'll just sit with this.
But just because he saves her,and she saves him, doesn't mean that the two are "madly in love".They never kiss, they never act like a couple. And from our earlier examples, you cannot compare non-canon couples to canon couples.Yes,it may seem like they could become canon, but they are not canon. If there isn't a moment in the manga where they are dating,or where they became a couple, they aren't canon.
I just believe that unless you have proof FROM THE MANGA,that the two are a couple, then they are not canon.
Rant done.
Thank you and have a blessed day~
