Chapter 2

'What do you want?' My breath was shaky.

'You are destined to help us,' it said. 'You must save us.'

Cautiously, I took another step forward until I was just inches away. The breath left my body and my knees were quakng with adrenaline. 'What do I have to do?' I whisper.

'Enter our world.' It said, When it spoke cold air rushed to my face, almost as if it were breathing. 'Enter our world and become one of us.'

I barely had time to open my mouth before I was pulled into another world. I fell. Screaming, I landed face down in the dirt, just metres away from a narrow winding path. Standing up, I brushed the dirt from my jeans cursing to myself. 'Great,' I muttered. From what it looked like, I was stood in a valley which was surrounded by large woods on either side. Strangely, it reminded me of my home town, Irwin, but it didn't look like anywhere I'd ever set foot before.

The breeze was slight and I could hear nothing but the rustling of the leaves as they seemed to be whispering to me.

'He is coming.... He is coming.' They said. It was like a thousand whispers at once.

I could barely make it out but the minute I did I could feel a change in the air. It felt like expectation. 'Who's coming?' I spoke out loud, not sure if I wanted to know.

'He is... He is... He is.'  When my head was filled with the strange chanting I  panicked and tripped right over my feet, falling straight onto my knees. 'Stop!' I yelled. It did. Shakily, I tried to stand but was alarmed into stillness when I felt the ground begin to shake. 'What's happening?' There was no response.

Instead, what began as a slight tremble increased until it felt as if the whole earth was moving and I could vaguely make out the sound of thundering hooves. 'A horse?' I said as soon as a large brown stallion came riding from above the horizon, its broad shouldered rider heading straight towards me. 'Shit.' I said before scrambling to get to my feet and threw myself out of its way just seconds before I was trampled to death.

Breathing heavily, I slowly stood. The horse had stopped a few hundred yards away, its rider was dismounted and landed on the ground with a heavy thud. He turned out to be handsome and tall with shoulder length brown hair that was braided in a complex style.

'Who goes there?' He called as soon as he came to a stop just several metres away. 'Are you hurt?' He asked. I wanted to laugh at his uncertainty, it was almost as if he thought I was going to do him any harm -  despite the fact that he looked to be six foot three at least and I was only a measly five foot eight in comparison.

'I'm fine.' I called out warily.

He took another step closer and scrutinised my clothes. 'Are you from this land?' He asked.

Slowly, I shook my head. When it was clear that he thought I was no threat he walked right up to me.

'Are you hurt?' He asked again. Shaking my head, I tried but failed to stop staring into his wonderfully coloured eyes.

Gtabbing my hand, he scrutinised it slowly before frowning. 'You bear no mark,' He said.

'What?' I asked. I tried to pull myself away from him when he sniffed at my hair. 'Um, can you stop that?'

He was cute (well, that was perhaps a bif of an understatement), but it was kind of creepy having him sniffing at my hair.

I held a few strands myself and sniffed at them self -consciously. 'My hair smells fine,' I added defensively. Not that he seemed to be listening.

When he pulled away he stared at me for a moment longer before speaking purposefully to nothing around us. 'She bares no mark nor a scent of a royal faery is on her. How is it that she roams our land?'

I actually turned my head to see if there was anyone behind us. Nope, he was definitely talking out loud to himself.

Just then the wind whipped up, brushing itself roughly against my clothing. Shuddering, I wrapped my arms around myself tightly in an effort to fight off the cool breeze.

'She is one of us,' the air seemed to whisper, much like I'd heard it before warrior-man here had turned up. 'She is yours.' It said.

The way its whispery voice seemed to float around us; coming from nowhere but everywhere at once, unnerved me. I supposed this was just what happened to girls like me (well, anyone like me) who wanted to find out why they were so 'special.' I'm sure there's no need to tell you just how much exactly I wish I'd never bothered but still.

The phrase, 'curiosity killed the cat,' came to mind.

However, although I wasn't dead yet I had a nasty feeling that I soon would be if I didn't get the heck out of here. Not that I knew how I'd managed to get there in the first place, what with falling from a magical old tree.

Warrior-man tensed up slightly at the response and cocked his head to the side. 'What did you say?' He asked it out loud. I didn't like the way his nostils flared or how his grip on my arms haf suddenly tightened painfully around my arm.

Needless to say I was becoming afraid of the next response, and wondered what would happen to me as a result.

'The girl is yours, oh mighty warrior.' I'd hoped I wasn't getting paranoid when I detected a hint of mockery as it said those words. 'What other half you desire, you have now received. But it is not without consequence as you deep down shall realise.'

No joke, I actually shook at its hidden menace. Warrior-man, whose grip was slowly causing me to lose feeling in my left arm, was also not liking the tone to which the mysterious voice now held. It just so happened that he was taking it out on my arm. Which was really not good, I can tell you.

After a dreadful minute of silence had passed, warrior-man finally spoke up. 'I know not what you mean, whisperer, but if you do not cease to speak in riddles then I know not what I should do with the girl.' He spoke with an equal menace that had my stomach in knots.

Despite that, I almost flinched at his word choice. I was eighteen for crying out loud, I was most certainly not a 'girl.' And despite his obvious medieval dress sense I could tell that hunky warrior-man was also no more than a few years older than myself.

There was a heavy silence and then 'the whisperer' seemed to speak once again, its soft unnatural voice seemingly taunting at us both. What it said next was only one word, but it had warrior -man burst into a frantic, and scarily speedy, action that I did not like one bit.

We waited for a moment longer, and then the word: 'Halfmate,' was whispered.

At first warrior-man froze, his face blank of all emotion, until he looked down on me with such uncertainty that I felt the strong desire to shrink into a small hole.

The moment only lasted a second though, because before I could argue, he suddenly seized me and picked me up onto his shoulder before somehow managing to slump me onto his horse.

It was all I could do to sit there in astonishment before I suddenly came to my senses to which I then realised that we were galloping at God-knows-what speeds, with the beautiful scenery blurring from either side.

Let's just say that my stomach was more than slightly unsettled by the impossible speeds of which we were travelling and I knew that if I didn't get off soon then I would most likely throw up.

Too bad that wasn't my biggest concern.
