Spin-off: Day 1138 (Part II)
I'll hit you if you mess this up. You've waited years for this, remember that.
A gentle smile curved up Kise Ryouta's lips as he read Kasamatsu Yukio's message.
Of course-ssu. I won't waste this chance.
His former team captain had remained a good friend to him through the years. He helped him in so many ways—especially when Kenly left. He had given him many advice. He would also accompany him whenever he visited Shinomiya Keren's grave and was the one to always console him every time he would blame himself for what happened in the past.
He owed Kasamatsu a lot. That's why he had kept him updated about his plans and during his travel.
Chuckling softly, Kise opened his group chat with the Generation of Miracles. They were quite noisy too.
Kuroko Tetsuya: I wish you luck, Kise-kun. Say hello to Shinomiya-senpai for me.
Momoi Satsuki: Ki-chaaaaannnn. I'm so excited for youuuuu. (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ
Murasakibara Atsushi: Did you cry when you finally saw her, Kise-chin?
Midorima Shintaro: I think that's not an appropriate question, Murasakibara. Kise's not a child anymore-nanodayo.
Aomine Daiki: I bet he cried. Hahaha
Kagami Taiga: Three years has passed and you're still an idiot, Ahomine.
Aomine Daiki: Huh?? What are you even doing here?? This group chat is only for us Generation of Miracles.
Kuroko Tetsuya: I added him, Aomine-kun.
Aomine Daiki: Tsk. I'm leaving this chat.
Momoi Satsuki: Mou. That's enough, Dai-chan. (¬_¬)
Akashi Seijuro: You guys are not in high school anymore. Stop embarrassing yourselves.
Akashi Seijuro: Ignore them, Ryouta. You just have to do what you came there to do. You have our full support.
Kise suddenly recalled the look on their faces when he told them the other day he was going to America to see Kenly. They were dumbfounded at first, but they gave him their support. And as a matter of fact, Akashi Seijuro used his family's connections to help him get a plane ticket as quickly as possible.
He was very grateful to have each one of them. Well, even though some of them weren't really good in giving helpful advices, they kept him company during those times where he felt tormented by his longing for Kenly.
Thank you, everyone. Really.
After sending a reply and even a selfie to their group chat, he kept his phone back inside his pocket then looked around.
He was currently inside Kenly's apartment, waiting for her to finish changing clothes. They had planned to eat dinner at a famous Japanese restaurant he saw in a magazine a while back. He figured she must've been busy with her work and had no time to visit a restaurant that was quite far from her place so he chose it for this occasion and immediately booked a reservation.
While he was scanning his eyes around, he spotted the big toy bear he had given her before. It was sitting on the sofa bed located in front of the television along with a bunch of throw pillows. It looked like she often stayed there because there was even a blanket.
He stepped closer then sat beside the huge stuffed toy, gently tapping its nose. He grinned before saying, "You have her scent. Does she hug you always? I'm jealous..."
Kise trailed off upon noticing Kenly's guitar on top of the coffee table together with a pen and an old notebook. He smoothed the guitar with his long fingers as memories of her beautiful singing voice took over his mind for a moment. His eyes then settled on the notebook beside it. Curious, he reached out to get it, carefully opening the cover.
He was expecting it to be a diary of some sort but what was actually written inside were songs.
They were her songs.
He flipped through the pages, occasionally chuckling at her erasures and some little Notes to Self she had written at almost every corner.
"She's so cute."
Suddenly, his honey-colored eyes widened. There was a particular note that said "For Ryouta" and the date written below seemed familiar. Upon realizing something, a small gasp escaped his throat.
It was that same day they were supposed to have their first date.
He remembered she told her she was doing something. He remembered that she even finished way past midnight. So she was writing him a song that time?
He turned to the next page, reading everything that was written there.
Sweetheart
You're like the sunshine,
giving me warmth
I didn't think I'd fall so deep
Deeply in love with you
You saved me from loneliness,
You gave me hope
You helped me heal,
Teaching me that life is still beautiful
Because you are by my side
I'll love you in return,
I'll take care of your heart
I'll wipe your tears away when you cry
And I'll celebrate with you when you're happy
Sweetheart
Thank you for your kisses,
thank you for your love
I want to be with you always
Always holding your hand
Now and forever
I am your sweetheart
A whimper flew past Kise's lips as tears started to fall from his eyes.
Every word was like a thorn to his heart. He was supposed to feel happy because he just learned how much Kenly truly loved him before but he felt like his chest was being stabbed multiple times instead. It was almost unbearable, he couldn't explain what he was feeling at the moment.
Guilt and regret slowly consumed him once again. It was like everything that happened before, the things he had regretted doing, suddenly came rushing back to him. It was as if they were reminding him of how he hurt her before and that he didn't deserve her.
Kenly, who just came out of her bedroom door wearing a cute baby blue knee-length dress, was completely stunned upon seeing Kise sobbing quietly. She realized he must've seen the song she wrote for him years ago because she caught sight of her notebook on his lap.
Worried, she immediately crossed the distance between them, sitting by his side then holding his trembling hand. "Hey. What's wrong?"
Kise instantly pulled her into a tight hug, much to her surprise. "I was so foolish. I'm sorry I caused you so much pain."
Up to this day, he still regretted what he did before. He regretted how he doubted her and left her during that time she needed him most. No matter how many times he convinced himself that he would make things right again, that he would become a better person for her, he still couldn't change the fact that he hurt her.
She loved him so much, he was aware of that, and yet he still chose to turn his back on her that day.
He hurt her, and he still couldn't forgive himself.
Kenly heaved a deep sigh, as if finally realizing what he was talking about. She wrapped her arms around him too. "Ryouta, it's okay now. Everything's—"
"But I can't imagine what you must have been feeling that time." He cut her off, tightening his embrace even more. "I've given you so much pain, and now I can't help but think that I don't deserve you."
Suddenly, memories of what happened that day and the days that followed came alive inside Kenly's mind. It made her heart clench in pain, making her eyes moist with tears. However, she didn't feel even an ounce of hatred for this man. If anything, she felt empathy.
She completely understood what he was going through; blaming himself, thinking that he was the worst human being on the planet, thinking that he didn't deserve to be happy just because he made some shitty decisions in the past.
She understood, because like him she went through all of that.
"Nobody's perfect, Ryouta," she started in a gentle voice, as if soothing him. "Even you can make mistakes. Even I do, too. But you know what's more important now? It's what we learned from them. It's how we grow from them."
Kise stayed silent for a moment as he buried his face on her shoulder. What Kenly said and the gentle tone she used filled his heart with warmth, removing all unwanted thoughts and clearing his mind.
She was right. It was pointless to dwell on the past.
He decided not to linger over his mistakes anymore than what he did these past three years. He worked hard to become a better person—he worked hard to become someone who was worthy of her. He waited for this moment, and he wouldn't ruin this chance just because he realized again how much of a fool he was back then.
Kise pulled away to meet her gaze. He held both sides of her face then stared directly into her beautiful blue eyes. "Thank you, Kenlycchi. For accepting me again."
"And thank you for not letting me go," she replied with a gentle smile, returning his loving gaze. Then as if remembering something, she broke free of his grasp then grabbed her guitar. "Oh. Want to hear me sing the song I wrote for you?"
"No. I want you to sing it for me on our wedding day."
Her eyes widened in shock as he stared at Kise in disbelief. "W-What?"
Then she saw him reach into the laptop bag he was carrying since earlier, fishing out a small black jewelry box. When he opened it, the diamond ring inside glistened in her eyes.
"Ryouta... T-This..."
"I can't wait another three years, sweetheart. Please come back with me to Japan and marry me." He was pleading, it didn't even sound like a proposal. "I know I'm still in college, and I know you probably think that I'm still too young, but I'm ready. I have my family's blessing, I even already have a house ready for us. I talked to your family as well—"
"Wait. What do you mean you talked to my family?"
Kise looked away for a moment, scratching the back of his head awkwardly with his free hand. "The truth is, I have been in contact with Karylle-san ever since you left three years ago. It was her who told me where to find you. Before I came to the hospital, I went to your house first. I talked to your brother and your father. I told them I'm going to propose to you today."
To say that Kenly was surprised was an understatement. By the time Kise finished, her mouth was already hanging open in shock. How did they manage to keep her in the dark all these years?
"I can't believe you, Ryouta. I didn't know you're capable of this."
Kise Ryouta actually added Shinomiya Karylle on facebook a few days after they moved to New York and they had been in communication ever since.
He would ask her about her little sister, checking how she had been doing, almost every day. Even if Karylle would take days—even weeks, sometimes—to reply, that didn't stop him from reaching out. Karylle was even kind enough to send him stolen shots of her sister from time to time, and he would look at them again and again while convincing himself that everything was going to be okay as long as Kenly was doing well.
Of course, that wasn't entirely true. He wasn't okay. He missed her a lot. Kenly at that time had disappeared. She had taken a break from social media and even changed her number so he had no ways of contacting her aside from her sister. He knew he was being desperate, but he didn't know what else to do.
When Karylle finally told him the reason why Kenly decided to shut down all of her social media accounts; because she was suffering from severe depression, he almost flew all the way to Brooklyn. It took almost every ounce of his energy just to stop himself from doing so. His friends, including Kasamatsu, convinced him not to go and that to give Kenly space. They told him that she needed time to heal, and that he didn't need to worry so much because she had her family by her side.
To Kise, that was easier said than done. How could he not worry when he knew she wasn't okay? He couldn't even talk to her, he couldn't comfort her, he couldn't hold her. He wanted to reach out to her, but he knew he couldn't. So he prayed earnestly instead, every single day, for Kenly to stay strong. For her to always remember all the good things in her life, and that she had a lot of people who loved and cared for her.
A year ago, however, Kenly finally created a new facebook account. He added her immediately, but it had taken one whole year for her to accept his request. Even if the wait made him uneasy, he knew he had to be patient. She had gone through a lot. He thought at that time that as long as he could talk to her again, as long as Kenly was still willing to let him into her life again, it was okay.
It was okay to wait, as long as it meant not losing her.
"I want to make sure everything goes well this time," Kise finally said, pulling himself out of his thoughts. "All that's left now is your answer. So hurry up and say yes, or else..."
Her brows furrowed upon seeing that mischievous look on his face. "What? What else have you got up your sleeve?"
Kise chuckled. She looked cute being so wary of him like he was going to blackmail her or something.
Well, she wasn't wrong though.
He reached into his bag again, but before showing her what he was holding inside he looked at her first. "I didn't want to do this, Kenlycchi, but you leave me no choice."
She was starting to get nervous. She had no idea what was going on inside Kise's mind.
After a few more seconds of observing her reaction and grinning from ear to ear like a little child, the blonde finally handed her the large wooden frame he was hiding in his bag. Upon closer look, it wasn't a picture but a piece of paper inside. Her eyes widened in complete surprise when she finally realized what it was.
It was a printed screenshot of their messages years ago.
Kise: But you're going to marry me someday, right? :(
Ken: Yes, of course.
Kise: After I graduate from highschool?
Ken: Okay okay. Let's get married after you graduate.
Kise: Promise me you won't marry anyone else.
Ken: Okay. I promise that I shall never marry any man but you, Ryouta.
This idiot really had it printed and placed inside a frame like what he said years ago.
She couldn't help but burst out laughing, cupping her aching stomach. And upon seeing her laugh like there was no tomorrow, Kise laughed as well.
"I cannot believe after all these years you are still an idiot," Kenly said, finally able to calm herself.
Kise gave her a pout. "Cruel-ssu. I have been serious about marrying you ever since, so you can't go back on your word now."
Kenly's eyes became blurry with tears as she looked at the man she loved in front of her, if it was due to her laughing her ass off just a minute ago or because of the overwhelming happiness that washed over her, she didn't know. All she knew was that like him, she couldn't wait another three more years.
She wanted to be with him, as much as he wanted to be with her.
"Yes. I'll marry you, Ryouta."
Kise's face immediately lightened up as relief flooded him entirely. He pulled her into his arms again for another tight embrace. Three long years of waiting had finally come to an end. He closed his eyes while silently muttering his thanks over and over again.
He was so happy that it felt like his chest would burst at any moment.
"I promise I'll be a perfect husband, Kenlycchi."
She pulled away, pinching both of his cheeks hard. "You already are."
Kise smiled upon hearing that. He crossed the distance between their faces then claimed her soft lips into a brief kiss. It was a slow, gratifying kiss that Kenly accepted with all her heart.
He then took her hand, carefully placing the diamond ring on her ring finger. It was the perfect size. Well, he had it made especially for her.
"I love you so much, Ryouta."
Kise brought her hand closer, pressing his lips against her knuckles as happiness and content filled his heart.
"I love you more, sweetheart. My facebook sweetheart."
