THREE

Saturday has arrived. The Republic City Police are either inside or outside, patrolling and monitoring the area making sure nothing goes wrong during the event. Politicians, celebrities, business people and many other influential people all dressed up in their tuxedos and expensive cocktail dresses and engaged and lost in the depths of their conversations. 'Wow! I've never seen this many people since Korra's birthday.' Mako comments, looking around the room from the balcony inside the ballroom. 'I've seen better. With all the social events I go to as a famous actor, I got used to it.' Bolin says with a nonchalant with a shrug. 'The only thing I don't like about these events is people wanting to befriend me for my status and fame and the women throwing themselves at me even though the whole world knows I'm married. That's why I always insist Opal to come with me.'

Mako chuckles at his brother. 'You're making it seem like Opal is some kind of repellent to keep those women away from you.' He comments. 'What? No! That's absurd. Okay, that's kind of true. But bringing Opal to these cocktails is kind of like the only time I get to spend some time her. With my hectic schedule and helping her take care of the kids, we barely ever have some alone time.' Bolin moves closer to him. 'I can't remember the last time we had sex without kids knocking on our bedroom door.'

'Okay, T.M.I. I don't need to know about your sex life, Bo.' Mako pushes him away. 'It's bad enough to have my partner preach his sex life like it's the bible.'

'Speaking of him, how did his "blind date" plan work out for you?'

'A disaster. I wasted my Saturday listening to some blonde bimbo who couldn't even give me a chance to say one word.' Mako sighs. 'I should have stayed home and caught up with work.'

'Well at least he got you out of your house for once. As much as I admire your hard work and how serious you are when it comes your job, it doesn't hurt to take a break every once in a while.' He tells him. 'So as much as it was a waste, it was totally worth it.'

I guess he's right, he tries to keep himself from smiling when the beautiful white-haired barista/bartender came into his mind. 'So, what got you to come to this event.' Bolin bursts his babble. 'I thought you were going to bail and drown yourself in your work.'

'Asami wants to introduce me to Korra's sister if the blind date didn't turn out well.' He tells him. 'Korra has a sister? I thought she's an only child.' Bolin knits his eyebrows together. 'How come she never told us?'

'Asami didn't really go into detail about it and I didn't press on the matter since it is Korra's story to tell. Plus, I doubt if Asami knows the full story either.'

'So, she wants you to meet Korra's sister? Don't you think it's a bit weird hooking up with your ex's sister?' Bolin asks warily. 'The very idea is just as good as your best friend dating your ex or worse; you best friend dating your daughter.'

'Who in their right mind would let their best friend date their kids? That sorta suggests that they've been having a pedo thing going on when their kids were young.' He replies very much disturbed at the idea.

'Mako! Bolin!' Someone catches their attention. They see Asami, who's dressed in a maroon short sleeve high neck dress and her hair tied into a high ponytail, with her husband Iroh II, who's wearing his military uniform, and her female friend, who's wearing a black see through lace dress with a short black dress inside. Mako's eyes grow wide as did the lady.

'You!' They both exclaim with smiles, catching the trio's attention.

'Uhm...you two know each other?' Asami and Bolin ask. 'Yeah, I saw him at the café I work at with his date some weeks back.' She explains. 'The lady was boring him to death, so I decided to swoop in and come to his rescue.'

'So, it was almost like fate and destiny, huh?' Asami asks, giving Mako an "i told you so" grin. 'Asami, I already told you that logic only works in fiction. Not real life.' She lids her eyes. 'At least someone agrees.' Mako replies, glad that someone sees where he's coming from.

Asami rolls her eyes. 'Mako, this is Remora.' She gestures at Mako. 'Remora, this is Mako.' She gestures at her friend.

'Nice to meet you.' She sticks out her hand towards Mako. 'The feeling's mutual.' Mako smiles, taking her hand and shakes it.

Cameramen are taking photos of the happily engaged couple. Korra's wearing an expensive ocean blue dress with long sleeves that was long up to her feet and hugged her curvy but athletic frame, her shoulder length dark hair shoulder length long is curled up and wavy, and a Water Tribe betrothal necklace that has a carving of a badger-mole on it. Jae's wearing a black tux, a fancy white shirt and a black waistcoat and a matching ocean blue bow tie. They both share a kiss before moving away from the flooding cameramen and journalists.

'Well, well, well. If it isn't the famous couple in all of Republic City.' Bolin smirked as he along with Asami and Iroh walk over to the couple. 'Good to see you too, Bolin.' Korra smiles, wrapping her arms around him. 'I'm glad you could make it.' Jae replies, giving Bolin a bro hug when Korra pulled away.

'And miss out on a chance to celebrate my brother-in-law' and best friend's engagement, not in this economy bro.' Bolin grins. 'I take it Mako couldn't make it because of work again?' Korra asks like it's the norm. 'Actually, he came. We left him with Remora.' Asami told her.

'Wait? Remora's here?' Korra asks surprised. 'I thought she said she couldn't make it because she had stuff to do.'

'Well I managed to persuade her to come. I thought she told you.' Asami furrows her eyebrows. 'She barely tells me anything.' Korra sighs.

'How come you never told us you had a sister?' Bolin asks. 'Well, she's not my actual sister as per se.' Korra says.

~•~

'She's my cousin.' Remora explains. 'My dad was the youngest of the Northern Water Tribe princes, but we practically grew up together and developed a sisterly bond.'

'How come Korra never talked about you.' Mako asks. 'It's...a long and complicated story.' She averts her gaze from him. 'We haven't really spoken to each other when she moved to Republic City twelve years and I'm not surprised that she never talked about me with anyone. Our last talk didn't end well.'

'Wanna talk about it?'

'I rather not. It's complicated.'

'I love complicated. Why do you think I'm a detective?' He says with a playful smirk.

'Oh! So, my sister dated a cop.' She cocks an eyebrow and returns the smirk. 'Are you a good cop or a bad cop?'

'Depends on your definition of good and bad.' He smirks making her laugh. 'But, yeah. We dated for six months.'

'What was it like dating the Avatar?'

'I dunno.' He answers as his eyes lingers around the room. 'I never really put a lot of thought into the idea. I mean sure she's the Avatar, the mediator between the four nations, the humans and spirits; but to me she's Korra. Someone who I've grown to respect over the twelve years I've know her.'

'She really was special to you, huh?' She asks, quietly. 'Yeah...' He answers.

Silence surrounds them like stars in the freckled night sky. 'To be honest,' Remora says. Mako turns his gaze towards her. 'you're not the Korra's ex-boyfriend I was expecting.'

'And you're not the Korra's sister I was expecting either.' Mako chuckles.

They stare at each. Tangerine to turquoise. She really is beautiful. That's the only one word to describe Water Tribeswoman beside him. Her eyes are a bright and clear aquamarine with a few flecks of green around her pupils. Her lips are thin and her nose slender and small. Her jaw is curved gracefully. Her body is slim and curvy in the dress she's wearing. Her breasts and hips are not too big nor too small. Her long snow-white hair complimenting her already exotic beauty. She looks like a goddess among the other women who each pale in comparison.

'We should probably head inside and meet up with the other before they start wondering where we are.' Mako looks away, trying to hide the blush on his face. 'Oh...um....you go on ahead without me. I think I'll stick around here a little longer.' She replies rather hesitant.

He stares at her confused at her sudden change of mood. 'Are you worried about what Korra would think if she sees us together?' Mako asks. 'No, it's not that. She doesn't know that I'm here and I don't really want to see her just yet.'

'How come?'

'It's....complicated.' She looks away.

Even he's still getting to know her better, Mako can't help but feel bothered and worried by her change of mood. He wants to know about whatever tension is between her and Korra, but he knows better to persist and push her into opening up to him especially when they've only seen each other three times so far.

'You sure you'll be okay on own?' He asks with a hint of concern. 'I don't mind spending the whole evening with you.'

'What am I? A damsel in distress?' She jokes, finally meeting his gaze. 'What kind of gentleman would I be leaving this damsel alone and unattended.' He smiles. Remora laughs and rolls her eyes. 'Well, this damsel is a big girl and can take care of herself.' She replies. 'Go. I'll be fine.'

'Okay.' He smiles. 'I'll be downstairs if you need me.'

'Sure.'

With that said, Mako leaves her alone.

'And that's another disadvantage of being a parent of three kids. They tend to drive you crazy.' Bolin says making the crew laugh. 'Bolin, I lived with Jinora, Ikki and Meelo. Kane, Nori and Kim are not any different from them.' Korra reminds him. 'Besides, you tend to be irresponsible with those three occasionally.' Asami adds.

'What?! No!' Bolin replies defensively.

'Oh yeah? What about the time you accidentally let them watch PG16 movies?' Jae recalls.

'That was one time!'

'Dude, do you have any idea how hard it was explaining to Opal how they ended up watching those movies without her pissing her off to the extent of getting us both skinned alive? Opal may be sweet, but underneath all that she's a demon that's been spawned from Hell.'

'But we managed to prevent that from happening, right?'

'Yeah, right after Aunt Sue lectured us whilst pulling our ears.'

Korra, Asami and Iroh laugh. 'The stuff you two do.' Korra smiles, kissing Jae on the cheek until Mako arrives to the scene. 'Hey guys.' Mako greets.

'Mako! It's been a while since we saw you.' Jae grins. 'Yeah, a while indeed.' Mako agrees giving him a tight bitter smile.

'I thought you'd be too occupied with work to even come to gatherings like this.' Korra says. 'Well, certain somebodies thought it was a good idea if I take a break from work.' He tells her.

'Good thing you listened. You work too hard for your own good.' Jae tells him. 'As demanding as your job is, you should have a bit of some fun. Don't waste your life the way my mom did.'

'I'll keep that in mind.'

'Where's Remora? Asami told me she was with you.' Korra asks.

'Oh, she's at the balcony.' Mako tells her. 'I insisted her to come with me, but she said she needed time to herself.'

What a cheap excuse to avoid me, Remora. Korra thinks. 'Excuse me.' Korra leaves for the balcony.

~•~

Remora's still at the balcony watching the guests conversing and moving around the ballroom. That is until she senses someone's presence beside her. She turns and see no one other than the person she's been trying to avoid standing next to her. Neither of them say a word to each other nor do they exchange any glance. They continue standing awkwardly next to each other for a brief period of time until Korra decides to break the silence and get rid of the tension between them. 'Hi.'

'H-hi me?' Remora jumps startled at her greeting. Korra nods with a small smile. 'Oh...um...hi?'

The awkward silence returns.

'You look beautiful.' Korra tries again.

'Thanks. You look beautifuller–I mean–more beautiful.' Remora's face flushes with embarrassment making Korra cackle. 'Thanks,' she smiles.

They go silent again. The only sound they can hear is the chatter coming from the guests, but Korra's not giving up. 'So,' Korra starts. 'this is how a formal event looks like, huh?'

'Yeah. Rich people, celebrities, business people and politicians chatting. The police patrolling every inch of this joint making sure that nothing bad happens.' Remora replies nonchalantly.

'And let's not forget the delicious treats being served.' Korra smirks.

'Lamb goat kabobs.' They both say, sharing a sisterly laugh.'

After their laughter dies down, they fall back into silence. Only this time the silence is somehow comforting and peaceful in a way. 'For a moment I thought you bailed on me.' Korra says looking at her. 'Well, Asami insisted I come meet your ex-boyfriend and with how highly she speaks of him, I was like why not.' Remora says.

Korra frowns at her response and looks away. 'Is that the reason why you came to my engagement party?' She asks quietly. Remora feels her heart drop. 'Korra-'

'If Mako hadn't come, would you have still had?'

Remora opens her mouth but closes it immediately. Korra slumps her shoulders. 'And here I thought you came because you're happy that I'm getting married.' She replies dejected. 'Korra, I am happy that you're getting married.' Remora tells her, meaning every word she's saying. 'There are not words to describe how ecstatic I am that you're going to settle down with the man you love even after what you've been through. It's just...' she sighs, looking to the side. 'it's just that there's a lot going on in my life that I really don't want to get to. And after the harsh exchange of words before you left the South, I assumed that you didn't want to talk to me.'

Korra sighs, 'You're stupid if you think that I wouldn't want to talk to you after what happened between us when we last talked.'

'Wait? So, you're not mad?' Remora asks, startled and surprised.

'Of course not. Yes, I was hurt at how we left things back then, but I never had it against you.' Korra tells her. 'You're my sister. You're family and family sticks together no matter what.' She smiles.

Remora feels a wave of relief wash over her as she returns the smile. 'So are you going to stay here or are you going to meet my fiancé.' Korra says. 'He's dying to meet you.'

'Sure, why not.' Remora shrugs. 'I want to see how worthy of a man he is and warn him about what he's getting himself into when he does marry you.'

'Very funny.'
