Chapter One ☆

Momo was hurrying into her bedroom. Navigating her way through the halls of her large house, she tried to keep the tears from slipping down her face. Tension was brewing in the air, and it would only be a matter of time before she heard the shouting of her parents.

When she ran into her room, she slammed the door behind her. Her ponytail was a mess, and she let her head fall into her hands. She felt tired, defeated, and broken. Almost every day it was like a battle between her parents, which usually involved one of them leaving.

In just a few short moments, her mother started to raise her voice. The noises were slightly muffled by the walls, but it still rang louder than ever in Momo's ears. Slowly, the shouting turned to screaming, with the cracking of voices and more anger. Her father started to get defensive and yell back.

Momo felt her legs get shaky. She stumbled to her door and slid down the side, falling to the floor. Bringing her knees up to her chest, Momo tilted her head down and let her emotions run wild. Tears flowed down her cheeks, staining her cheeks red and causing her skin to burn. Her crying was so violent she was practically wheezing, with desperate breaths in between the sobs.

Footsteps were pounding around the house. Up and down stairs, across the kitchen, and slowly sweeping by Momo's room. The fighting hadn't ceased, but Momo knew how it worked. They would get worked up, until all of a sudden one of them would run out of the house and vanish, usually not returning for a day or so.

The lights in Momo's room were off. She was sitting in the darkness, unable to speak from the sobs that escaped her. Her hair was sticking to her face from the tears, and she gently wiped it away with the back of her hand. The small bit of mascara she had applied for school was leaving dark trails down her face.

Leaning her head back, Momo stared up at the ceiling. Every time she blinked, more tears would slide down her cheeks. She lifted up her hands and rubbed her eyes, leaving dark marks on her knuckles.

It felt like hours had passed, but it only had been around three minutes. The screaming in the background made Momo's head pound, and she felt herself get dizzy. Her heart was pounding against her chest as the sound of her mother yelling through tears reached her ears.

Momo shakily reached into her pocket and grabbed her phone. She stared at the contacts for a few moments, her hands trembling. She wanted so bad to call one of her friends, like Uraraka or Jirou, but she couldn't. They knew her parents fought, but didn't know it was this bad. Momo slowly put her phone down on the floor beside her and swallowed hard, her face hot from crying.

Finally, finally, one of her parents broke. She could tell it was her mother by the way she ripped the keys off of the counter and stormed out of the house, slamming the door behind her. Momo listened for the sound of the car starting and quickly speeding out of the driveway, racing down the road.

Momo was silent for a few minutes. She listened to the sound of the clock ticking in her room, filling her mind and absorbing all of her thoughts. Her father's footsteps stumbled up the stairs and slowly made their way down the hall opposite of Momo.

Rubbing her eyes one more time, Momo rose to her feet. She felt wobbly and unstable as she slowly walked over to her bed an slowly sank into it. Her head was pressed lightly against her pillow as she stared up thoughtfully at the ceiling. Eyelashes heavy from tears, Momo slowly turned her head to the side and gazed out of the window of her bedroom.

Icy snow covered the sidewalks. The sky was full of thick gray clouds, and the roads were laden with slushy snow. Autumn had slowly come to an end, and winter was coming rapidly. They've had two snowstorms in a span of one week.

Staring outside for that span of time had made Momo tired. Her cheeks still warm from tears, and her eyes still puffy, Momo slowly let out a sigh. She turned onto her side and slowly closed her eyes, taking shaky breaths.

After lying like that for around a half an hour, Momo fell into an uneasy sleep.

________

Momo slowly opened her eyes. Her room was nearly pitch black, swarmed in darkness. The only light was a small sliver of moonlight casting a small shine on the snow around her house.

Slowly lifting her head, Momo's eyes still felt red and irritated. She glanced to the clock on her end table and realized that it was 1:28 in the morning.

Letting out a sigh, Momo rested her head in her hands for a few moments. She wondered if her mother had ended up coming back that night, but she wouldn't be surprised if she didn't.

As her thoughts nearly consumed her entirely, Momo heard the growling of her stomach. She lifted her head slowly and rose up from her bed, trying to ignore the small headache that was slowly forming.

Slowly walking toward her bedroom door, Momo realized that her hair had fallen out of its ponytail while she was sleeping. She grabbed a strand of her hair and ran her hand through it, using it as a way to calm her down.

Holding her breath, Momo opened the door to her bedroom slowly. The hallway was completely dark, and it seemed like the entire house was the same. She tiptoed past the guest rooms, though she didn't really have any reason to since they were empty.

Momo's room was downstairs, so she didn't have to worry about waking up her parents. Well, one of them. She quietly walked into the large kitchen, gazing around. The marble countertops glinted in the moonlight that was shining through the windows. The stove's lock told her the same time that her alarm clock did.

She quickly opened the fridge and grabbed a bottle of water before closing it again. Momo realized that her hands were trembling as she tried to open the water. After taking a sip, she briskly walked back down the hallway and closed her bedroom door again.

Holding back another wave of tears, Momo set her water bottle down on her end table and crawled back into her bed, burying her face into her pillow.
