Chapter Six
Soft light is all Katy saw. The soft dim lights of the ambulance. Made her feel safe and calm. Her breathing was getting shorter and harder to breathe normally. The nurses took Katy to the Emergency room and Jess and James had to wait in the hallway.
"Katy, can you hear me?" Doctor Mike asked.
"Y-Yes I can hear you," Katy replied softly.
"Great. Katy, do you know what's going on?" Doctor Mike asked politely.
"No sir," Katy answered Coughing.
"Katy, you have lung cancer," Doctor Mike informed her.
"Lung Cancer?" Katy questioned.
"Lung Cancer is a disease that is rare to have. Currently, you're on stage 3 of your lung cancer. Although your medication slows it down only for a few hours." Doctor replied.
Katy didn't say a word and stayed quiet. She was scared about her life. She was going to die and she didn't want to die yet. She wanted to live old and have a family and watch her kids grow up. However, Katy had a lot of doubts in her mind.
Katy had to stay overnight in the hospital for a few days until she was able to go home. However, they believe she will be fine and be able to come home on her birthday.
"Katy, do you know your birthday?" Doctor Mike asked with a smile.
"June 28th, 2004" Katy answered breathing slowly.
"That's about three days away from now." Doctor Mike added.
Katy nodded and smiled. She was happy it was about her birthday but at the same time she wanted this pain to leave her alone. She felt like crap and her eyes filled up with tears. She was scared about dying so young.
The doctor said goodbye to Katy and left the room. Katy grabbed the remote and turned on the TV. She looked for something to watch. She started watching a movie to clear her mind of everything in her life and hoped everything was going to be alright.
After all, it was almost her birthday. Katy didn't want to give up just yet and she know she couldn't give up. She did want to die without seeing Merla for the last time. She wants to say goodbye to her. That was her motivation to stay alive and fight through her illness.
"I'm not giving up yet. I'm doing this for you Merla," Katy whispered to herself as tears rolled off her face.
"Everything is going to be fine," Katy mentioned.
"I'm going to live and I'll be able to live a good life," Katy continued.
Katy talked to herself for hours and saying positive things and fighting through the pain she was feeling inside. She wouldn't give up and she wouldn't give up on Merla. She was the only true friend she had in her life and she didn't want to leave her.
Katy grabbed the water off the side table and drink the water. A nurse came in and made sure Katy was alright. She helped Katy to the bathroom before she went to sleep. Then the nurse closed the door and left. Katy was alone in a dark hollow room and closed her eyes once again.
