Chapter One
The pain in my chest has been hunting me for two months now. My mother thinks Katy doesn't have enough sugar or iron in her blood. Katy believed her because, after all, she was her mother. Katy walked back to her room and grabbed her sketchbook and pen. Katy started drawing and her father came into her room with a worried look on his face. Katy looked up at him with a puzzled look. Her father put his hand on Katy's leg.
"Dad? Is everything alright?" Katy questioned putting down her things.
"Yeah. We are going to go to the Doctor for a check-up alright," Her dad answered with a slight smile.
"Alright Dad," Katy chuckled as she smiled at her dad.
Katy crawled to her dad and hugged him. His hands wrapped around Katy and held her close. His body language shows concern and fear. Katy didn't dare to overthink about her dad. After she knew he probably had a bad day at work. Katy let go of her dad and smiled. Her dad smiled and messed up her hair as he chuckled. He got up and walked out of her room, closing her door. Katy changed her shirt and threw on sweatpants. Katy grabbed the light blue shoes her aunt gave her before she died when she was young. She missed her aunt very much.
Katy left the room and sat on the couch waiting for her dad. She saw her dad walk out of the bathroom and smiled. Katy got up and followed her dad to the garage. As the old garage door opened they got inside the car. Katy put her seat belt on and she saw her mom sitting on the passenger side. They drove to the doctor's and Katy looked out the window. She saw a raven flying next to the car. Katy smiled and tried to draw the raven in her sketchbook.
As the car stopped. Mom and Dad unbuckled their seatbelt as she put my things down. Katy unbuckled her seatbelt and opened the car door. Katy's dad closed her door and walked next to Katy. Katy's mother held her hand and didn't say a word to her or her dad. Dad didn't say anything either which was odd. Katy felt an uneasy feeling coming from her parents. They weren't telling her something. They got to the sidewalk and Katy's heart started hurting causing her to cough non-stop.
Katy fell to the ground as she coughed. Her dad picked her up as her mother ran inside the hospital. Katy's dad carried her in his arms running inside the hospital. Katy looked and saw her mother at the front desk as one of the nurses came with a wheeled bed. Katy's dad lay her in the bed as they took her to the ER room. Katy was confused about what was going on with her. The pain in her chest grew causing her more pain than she could bear.
Katy thought that her chest pain and coughing hurt more than her period cramps. As they got to the room the nurses got her a laughing gas mask. As the nurse put the mask over her Katy felt sleepy. Katy was put to sleep. The nurses and doctors tried to find out what was going on with Katy. One of the doctors checked her breathing. Katy's breathing would be normal then it would stop and repeat.
Outside the room, Katy's parents were very worried about their daughter. Katy's mother tried to pray and calm down her husband. Katy's father didn't take this lightly. He paced in front of the door. He was scared for his daughter. He couldn't lose her, not today at least.
"Darling please calm down," Katy's mother cried, putting her hands on his shoulders.
"I can't calm down Jess! I'm scared for Katy!" Katy's dad scaredly yelled, putting his fingers through his hair.
"James please, Katy's going to be alright. She's a strong girl," Jess sobbed.
"I'm scared for Katy. We can't lose her yet. She's so young," James uttered, as he put his head on Jess's shoulder.
The doctor came out of the room and told Jess and James that their daughter has Lung cancer. They gave them medication Katy's going to have to take every day and night before she goes to bed. James's face was very distraught. Jess grabbed the medication and put it close to her heart crying. James sat on the chair as tears went down his face. Katy comes out of the room not coughing at the moment. Although her chest pain didn't go away.
James and Jess ran to Katy and hugged her tightly. Their tears went through Katy's clothes. Katy hugged them back. They walked back to the car and got home. Katy's dad gave her the medication that she had to take. Katy took the pill and smiled as she went into her room. Katy got in her bed and fell asleep wondering what happened. Her parents, doctors, and nurses didn't tell her what was wrong with her.
James sat on the couch and cried. He felt guilty for not taking her to the doctor sooner. James felt fear, anger, and guilt about everything. He grabbed a tissue and blew his nose. As sat there he felt warm comforting hands wrap around him.
"This isn't your fault darling," Jess started with a comforting tone.
"She's too young Jess. I can't lose our baby girl," James spitted out.
"James, we're going to get through this together. The doctor said if she started showing new symptoms. To take her back," Jess mentioned.
James didn't speak, not even a whisper or a mumble. He looked down at the ground as Jess hugged him tight.
"Sometimes the world doesn't go the way we want it to go. But we have to accept that Katy may or may not get better. As long as we're there for her," Jess uttered with tears going down her face.
"Thanks, Jess," James chuckled, as he put his hand on Jess's.
"Your welcome, Now let's head to bed," Jess sniffed and smiled.
They got up and walked to their bedroom. James closed the door and grabbed clothes and changed. Jess went to the bathroom and changed as she blew her nose. Jess opened the bathroom door and got in bed. James turned off the lamp and crawled under the blanket.
James felt most of his emotion lift off his chest. James turned on his side before falling asleep. Jess laid on her back and fell asleep looking at the ceiling. The guilt lifts off of them like rocks falling off a cliff. They felt less guilty than before and hoped their daughter could hopefully live the rest of her life.
