Chapter Five

The pain felt like knives stabbing her body over and over again. Katy hated this feeling and how it made her feel. She wished for it to stop and go away but nothing would happen. Katy took her pills and just stared at the pill bottle. The small orange bottle of pills was in her hands with labels. She set them down and grabbed her crouches. She walked outside of her room and her parents were still asleep. "They're always up by now. They must be sleeping in today," Katy thought to herself.

She opened the door and walked outside. Closing the door behind her she started walking to the woods. She hoped she could see Merla again. She missed her and she just need a friend to talk to about what was going on with her life. Katy kept thinking she was going to die. With everything that was going with her body that's all she could think of. Her body fighting against her. Making her worse and worse every day. Katy's thoughts were a mess and all over the place. She couldn't think straight and when she tried to find out what was truly wrong with her. She got nothing and found out nothing about her.

"Merla? Are you here!" Katy shouted through the woods.

"Katy!" Merla yelled running to her voice.

"Merla! I've missed you," Katy chuckled and smiled.

"Katy, why are you in crutches? What's going on with you?" Merla questioned with all levels of concern.

"I can't walk normally anymore. It feels like my body is fighting me," Katy sighed with doubt and sadness.

They walk to the old tree log they always sit at and talked. Katy told Merla everything that has been going on. Even saying how her parents won't say anything to her about her illness. Merla hugged her tightly as a cold shiver went through Katy's spine. Merla's hollow body has always left her questioning.

"Merla, can I ask you something?" Katy asked politely.

"Of course anything," Merla chuckled and nodded.

"Why is your stomach hollow and transparent?" Katy asked trying not to make it weird.

"It's a long story. But I'll tell you," Merla mentioned.

"When I was 15, I got pregnant without knowing. Then I ended up having a daughter and she was so beautiful. While I was holding her in my arms I passed away without saying goodbye to my daughter. I just hope she's with a good family. She turns 14 this year." Merla continued.

"So my soul stayed on earth and cause I never got say goodbye. My stomach is transparent as a symbol of my daughter. Then I took a form of a raven and turn human when I want." Merla mentioned as she looked at for stomach.

"I'm so sorry. That must have been hard for you Merla," Katy stated and hugged her tightly.

Merla smiled and hugged her back. They talk for a few hours and then Katy walked back home. Once she got home her parents smiled as they were cooking lunch. Katy walked to the table and started eating. After finishing she went back to her room and grabbed her sketchbook and started drawing. Katy put music on and it gave her inspiration.

Hours turned into more hours. The day turned to night and Katy went to take her pills before she went to bed. She got in her bed and went to bed and slowly closed her eyes for the night.

The next morning she woke up and felt quickly grabbed her crouches and spit up blood in the sink. She was in there for about twenty minutes and her mother ran into the bathroom to see what was going on. Jess saw the blood dripping from her mouth and quickly grabbed a rag from the kitchen. The blood still kept coming out of her mouth and the sink was covered in blood.

Jess grabbed Katy and laid her down as she cleaned the blood off of her. Katy wanted to scream and shout but she couldn't. Katy couldn't breathe it was hard for her now. She was only getting worse and worse. Jess yelled at James to call 911 and get them her as fast as he could.

"I-I can't breathe," Katy carefully let out.
