Chapter 7: Our first task

*16 days later*

I watched Kisha notch another arrow and let it fly; another bull's eye.

I stood up, leaning on my sword. "That's what, 100th in a row today?"

"Dunno wasn't counting. Was I supposed to?" She asked, notching another arrow, another bull's eye.

"No, not at all." I nodded. "How are the boys doing?"

We both stared at the boys practicing their swordfights. Theo was resting, Ethan and Matthew were in a whirlwind of attacks. I took a glance at Kisha, "You wanna practice?"

Kisha always said that she sucks at swordplay, but she really isn't that bad, she just gets intimidated easily. She nodded and pick up her wooden stick, holding it up.

She swung and I blocked, I swung and she parried it away. I sidestepped her strike and jabbed, she barely dodged it and returned it with a strike. It went on like this for a while, but for her stake, we did it in a slow pace.

We stopped to the pounding of feet coming toward us, Ethan was running toward us waving a piece of paper in the air, Theo and Matthew close behind him, trying to keep up with Ethan's rediculous sprinting speed.

"Our first mission!" He shouted, and our eyes widened.

"Already?!" I asked in surprise.

"It's only been a week!" Kisha exclaimed. "What are we doing?"

"Visiting one of the many woodland mansions scattered among this world and take a report on them on their behavior," Ethan replied, reading from the paper. "We're supposed to leave in two days."

"Short notice," I noted, and they nodded.

"This will be our first grade. At the end of about, 2 missions they would assign us to positions in the army and possibly fight in the next battle." Theo looked up and stared into our eyes. "We can't mess this up, got it?"

"Who in the right mind will?" Ethan laughed, and the mood lightened up slightly thanks to his contagious laugh.

"I dunno. Just in case you know." Theo gave a little smirk.

"How long will we be there? Or, how long will we be gone?" Kisha asked, and Matthew had an answer to that.

"This mission can only take up two weeks. We'll only be staying at the mansion for two days and one night. Shouldn't take long."

I straightened up. "Two days pass by quickly, and so does this period," I noted from the commotion by the rack. "Get ready tonight start preparing. After school, we'll meet in the yard where every other group is heading off."

"Alright!" Kisha chriped, and the boys nodded, though Ethan gave me a thumbs up.

*Two days later*
(Sorry for the frequent time skips. I really don't wanna write any fillers)
(Note: In here, they have their regular inventories, but they have a choice to take a backpack for extra space. Think of it as a mod they use.)

I shouldered the backpack I crafted last night.
I took a glance at the note I wrote to my father- The messenger that picked up my letters was supposed to come tonight, and I can't have my father getting worried.

I went to school, as usual, giving Ethan a quick high five when I passed him in the halls. After school, I headed to the yard, where a commander passed out maps, compasses, and our location.

Theo got there first with Matthew and handed each of us our copy. Our assigned mansion was pretty far, nearly a three thousand blocks away, and ours was the 3rd closest one. Apparently, they gave us some farther ones to see whether or not we can get something done within a time limit.

Kisha nearly fainted when she saw the numbers, and even for me, I felt a little numb,

"Three thousand?!" Ethan exclaimed.

"Yup." Matthew sighed. "On foot, that's going to take several days, perhaps a week."

"But that leaves us no time to gather information..." Theo replied.

"Can we fake it? No, better not risk it, don't want to get into trouble. Just an idea guys, don't freak out." Kisha sighed, "Amythest, what do you think?"

I studied the map that we were supposed to follow, someone circled in black where the mansion was, and a black line showed us where the shortest path was, but not the fastest.

"There's a faster way," I replied,

"How? That's the shortest way!" Theo exclaimed.

"That is the shortest way, by blocks, not by time." I grinned, "Two options, we use one or two days travel to the nearby village and borrow their horses and travel to the mansion in a shorter amount of time- or take the train about the three-day walk from here and walk about another day." I looked up to their shocked faces. "I bet they did that on purpose."

"So which way then?" Ethan asked.

"How about on horse to get there and train to get back- It saves us gold for the two-way train ride," Kisha answered, looking up. "Sounds good?"

I playfully slapped her on her back, "You got some brains there, Kisha!" She flushed with some pride and stood a little straighter.

"The other groups are leaving, shall we?" Matthew asked, taking a glance at the other groups.

"We shall," I confirmed.
