Chapter 5: Impressing Everyone.

*Two days later*

Even after two days, my victory over Jayden was still being echoed among the entire school. I'll pass by them in the halls and they would whisper about it, pointing at me.
It didn't make me uncomfortable, no, I was used to it already, being the princess of the Netherworld.

As I made my usual trip to school, there was a lot more commotion in the school yard- the commander of the local militia was sitting on his spotted brown horse, organizing the enlistment for the junior scouts.

There was three massive lines for enlistment, and later on that day would be just tests to see our level and out temporary rank. From what I understand, we will be split up into 5 ranks- Junior leader, experienced, average, inexperienced, and starter. Anyone who doesn't make it to starter isn't qualified to join. After, we get put into groups and get sent on mini different ranked missions to "prove our worth" and finally participate in a battle.

I wasn't worried, I was more than confident that I would land myself in the top rank.

The class was barely paying attention when someone came to our class to call the people who signed up. Among my class of 20, 13 of us signed up. And no surprise, Jayden and his two friends signed up. throwing me dirty looks.

He lined us up outside where two other classes were, in separate lines. He told us that one by one we would spar with a solider where someone will judge us, then move on to the next line where they would test us one something else.

I was about 5th in line, with Jayden right behind me. I watched the solider who was up, and my trained eyes studied his fighting pattern. Mostly defense, but an occasional strike. I suspected he was doing it on purpose to test both our offence and defense skills.
I smirked to myself, Im ready.

I picked up the stick and stood there, waiting for him to make the first move. He notice this, and lunged at me. He swung his stick, and I parried it away. He was bigger and possible better in strength, meaning that I have to use speed to my advantage. I blocked his next strike, bent down low, and struck at his legs and swiped at his chest. He saw the move coming and used the opening at my left and tapped my hip with the edge of his stick. I grabbed it and pulled making him topple forward, and I slapped his back.
He rolled back up and struck me in a whirlwind of attacks. I was barely able to block them all, much less counter attack.

My heart pounded, just like whenever I'm fighting with my father or Withy. And finally as I was catching my breath, he disarmed me and my stick went flying.

I clutched me knees, wheezing. I haven't felt this good since the last time I fought my father.

He stuck his hand out to help me out, and I gratefully accepted it. From the corner of my eye, I saw Jayden gaping at me, surprised, and I flashed him a smug smirk.

"Well done." The solider nodded. "Who taught you?"

"My father." I panted, "Where do I go next?"

"The next line. Mark my words, with your skill, you will become something one day." He turned around and began to fight Jayden.

He wasn't doing too well, disarmed after barely a minute, and he sulked over to my line.

The next test was simply just a strategic test, testing our common sense. I finished it, easy, and handed my paper in. We were free for the day, and so I sat down in the shade of a oak tree watching the other students.

"Hey. Amethyst, right?" Someone said above me.

"Yes." I straighten up. "May I help you?"

"Well, you were amazing when you took the first test. I heard the judges talking about just leveling you up to a regular solider."

"Nice to know." I nodded.

He shuffled his feet, "Well, we're going to get to pick our groups later and each group has to have  Junior leader, and no doubt you're getting it. Do you mind if, uh..."

I blinked and it clicked. "Oh, uh, we'll see."

He brightened up. "Okay! Thank you!"

He disappeared down the hill, and I sighed. Suddenly the odd girl out became the popular one, because he wasn't the only one who came and asked me. Several people- even those girls crowding against Jayden was coming to me. I poliety told then I'll think about it, but all of them acted like I already said yes.

"Did you hear?" Some one said on the opposide side of me.

"Hear about what?"

"That apparently there's a girl in the nether working for Herobrine!"

I snapped into attention. I picked up a book and pretended I was reading and listened into the conversation.

"No way!" Two gasped.

"Yes! Axel said that on a dare to get quartz, a girl with brown hair attacked them, and he just managed to escape."

Whoops. That'll be me, thank you.

"Wow! Who would be crazy enough to work for him?"

"Dunno! But really, I don't believe him. He's most likely lying so he doesn't get into trouble for losing Henry."

"What if it's Herobrine's daughter?"

I froze.

"Nah, impossible! Thousands of years ago, the three brothers made a vow not to have any children. It will upset the balance of power."

I bit my lip. No wonder he didn't want me to get myself known. I was never supposed to be born.

"True." One agreed. "I wonder how Jayden got beaten by the new girl though."

"Nah, Jayden said he went easy on her, because it was her first time. But it doesn't make any sense that why she was able to actually fight the solider."

"Beginner's luck. Girls aren't meant to be sword fighters." Another laughed.

I gritted my teeth. I wished the paid more attention in class, there are women warriors.

The bell rang, signaling the end of class.  I dashed out before the girls can see me, heading back.
