Chapter 24: There are better ways.
"what are you doing?" Kisha screeched, turning around in horror as she watched me run in the opposite direction we were supposed to go.
It sounded absurd to be doing that...
"Just follow me!"
but I had a plan. A good one at that.
I had predicted that everyone would surge forward to the train station via the fastest route possible. With so many people crowding on one main road, the fastest way there just so happened to become the slowest possible way.
There were other and better methods to get to the train station, and I was positive we would get there faster.
I lead my group to the base of a three-story wooden building and took out ladders from my inventory. "How are your parkour skills?" I asked as I climbed up the ladder, placing them as I went.
"We're parkouring?" Matthew asked, stopping in his tracks.
"It'll take us away from the crowd below and give us the advantage." I answered, "Why, have you never done it before?"
"No... I have." Matthew said uneasily "I just... don't like it."
Ethan pushed him toward the ladder where I was climbing. "Hey, we know you took a bad fall as a kid but this is a necessity. Goooo!"
I felt bad for making Matthew do something that he didn't like doing- or had a bad experience with, as Ethan suggested, but we had to do this to get to the train on time.
Noah was right behind me, and I extended my hand to reach out to help him up to the roof od a three-story building.
If I just looked down a little, I could see the other idiotic competitors rushing around through the streets to try and gain a little bit of distance from everyone, but as far as I was concerned... no one was trying the same method as we were.
I turned back and saw that almost everyone was up- I think Matthew is climbing up the ladder now and smirked. "You guys ready?"
"Amythest stop talking," Noah was already running "and go!"
I've missed running and jumping on top of things. It reminded me of the numerous times back when I was in the nether, hopping from one ghast to the other on top of the nether fortress.
It was fun.
I leaped over a gap between two buildings, trying not to laugh despite the situation.
I would occasionally look back to see how the others were doing. Aside from Matthew, everyone seemed to be having a pretty good time following Noah and me toward the train station. It would only be a matter of time before everyone started copying us, and I figured we might as well cover as much distance as we could-
An arrow flew past the air, missing my face by a hair's length.
Everyone turned their heads to look at the person who shot it. We didn't stop, but we definitely slowed down a little in surprise.
weapons were allowed? What if someone got hurt in the brawl down in the streets?
Someone could be playing dirty, and I wanted to know who.
It was hard to focus on someone so far away when you're running, but I was sure that it was one of the people we saw fighting with Emily in the inn last night, and it seemed like he wanted to get revenge.
I pushed Kisha and Ethan out first, as they would be the most likely of people to be attacked because of their involvement. "Keep going!" I pulled Matthew forward "Matthew, hurry up! Theo don't slow down!"
"What about me?" Noah asked.
"Oh, I- Just go! Run in an irregular pattern so they can't shoot you-"
I stopped talking to prevent me from swearing as from the corner of my eyes I can see people trying to copy us and get onto the roofs. It comforted me that the majority of the people were still in the streets, but now we would have competition.
A shout came from around the place where the person tried shooting me at, and I turned around to see Emily wallop the boy from behind with a sword, knocking him down onto the floor with the flat side of her blade.
I can hear her loud 'hah!' from where I was standing, and smirked.
I made a mental note to myself to thank her later if she and her group made it onto the train, but I desperately needed to catch up with everyone.
People were right behind my heels at this point, and I could see Noah breaking blocks to try and slow them down since they would have to make a difficult jump. He did refrain from breaking one for me to jump onto. "Hurry and jump! Oh for the love of- why are there so many people behind you?!"
"Because they have no mind of their own-" I took a sprinting jump, successfully crossing over a four-block gap right before Noah broke the fifth block. I stumbled across the stone roof, rolling back up to my feet and resumed running as if nothing happened "-and they decided to copy the best. Keep going!"
"The train station should be up ahead- everyone else ran ahead!" Noah said between heavy breaths. "Matthew built a one-block bridge between two buildings that couldn't be jumped- go! I'll break the bridge afterward just get there-"
A single block was a little too narrow for my comfort, especially at that length and height from the street floor. I ran along with it anyway, lifting myself up a two-block high wall and tumbled over it.
By this time, I can already see the others in my group at the train station, standing there impatiently and reserving the seats we needed. None of us can actually get on until Noah and I get there, but I could see that the seats were still relatively empty.
were we first?
the seats will no doubt start filling up very soon but-
"Ah-!"
I turned around just in time to see Noah being dragged behind by a hurried group.
No one would be able to get on unless everyone was there-
I spun around on the heel of my feet and ran back. It was only a one-block difference this time so I crossed the wall easily and landed on the bridge, running back along the one-block wide bridge to Noah.
I drew an iron sword and charged, shoving one of them off the two-story building we were on and joined Noah. "What are you doing?"
We were still surrounded, and I can start seeing people from the streets start to approach the train station.
"This isn't our first fight together," Noah smirked.
"We don't have the time to pick a fight, Noah."
"Then let's get out of here!"
The two of us didn't even bother fighting. We pretended to, but as soon as an opening formed between two people, Noah made a mad dash for it and broke apart the ring that surrounded us. I didn't notice, but he slowed down a little and grabbed my hand to pull me along with him.
When we got to the bridge, I shoved him toward the wall and knelt down. I turned around and took out a pickaxe, and started breaking the bridge to slow them down.
"What are you- there's no time for that-"
"Keep going!" I told him when he tried to pull me with him "Tell the conductors or something that I'm right there and let you guys go- there can't be many seats left now. Hurry up!"
If we left the bridge here, the people chasing us would have all the opportunity in the world to catch up with and overwhelm us again. We were two people and had the advantage of speed and options, but if they caught up to us while we were trying to cross over that two-block wall-
That would waste even more time. Not to mention how dangerous it was to fight at such a height.
"Amythest-"
"Noah, go! I'll be right there!"
Why did I bring a stone pickaxe and not an iron one?
I finished just as another person jumped, falling right onto a pile of hay that was lying around on the bottom of the bridge that was lying around in the alleyway. I stood up and started running, fully aware that the people behind me were already starting to build their own bridge to get to me.
My heart sank when I heard the train bell ring, but I kept on sprinting anyway.
Kisha saw me first and screeched "There she is!"
Theo turned to the person passing the permission slips out, saying something urgently. I can only guess what he said, but I was sure he was asking for permission to get on.
The man in the blue suit looked at me running and scrambling down the roofs, probably sighed and gestured for them to head on the train.
The train was already moving by now, though it was still pretty slow.
My group dashed onto the open back compartment of the train along with all of our things and turned around to me.
"Amythest!" Noah held out his outstretched hand from the little arch-way for me. The train was slowly picking up speed, and I was already running as fast as I could pass the crowd that dejectedly watched the train leave the station.
there is no way I can make this.
Oh for goodness' sake you're the daughter of the nether itself. Run faster!
I was reaching the end of the station platform now, long past the area where passengers were supposed to board.
The train was just a few blocks away-
I continued sprinting,
and jumped.
