Chapter 4: Down Below and Few Doors Away
That night Jiyoung closed her eyes on the floor with a spare blanket and pillow but all she could do was toss and turn. She was afraid to close her eyes. When she did all she could think about was if something was going to come in and get them. The two of them had learned some things about the monsters from being alone. Jiyoung's phone beeped very few times when she would type in some numbers to call somebody. It only took them that time to realize what it meant. Monsters.
She gets up from the floor and sits against the wall, gun in her hand. While the man slept in his bed soundly, Jiyoung could only watch the door and the window with the curtains that were shut. She would type in some numbers every now and then, putting her headphones in to possibly listen and see if a monster was nearby. It never beeped but she still felt unsafe.
She sighed bringing her knees up to her chest. She was acting crazy, she knew that. She had to calm herself. Usually she was calm and collected. She was like her dad in that way, unlike her mom and brother. They could be hysterical at times.
She chuckled to herself at the memories of her family being all together, including her dad. Even if all memories with him turned sour. Most ended with him finding his "work" more important than his family. If he could be selfish, why couldn't she? Why couldn't she put herself first for once after years of helping her mom and brother?
She closed her eyes briefly, drifting off into sleep.
"Mom?" She called out looking around the apartment. Her mother sat on the floor in tears. "Mom what's wrong?"
"He's going back," her mother weeps. Jiyoung instantly knew what was wrong. She rolled her eyes but bent down to hug her.
"We'll be okay, Mom. We don't need him."
How selfish are you? You used to care about your family.
Jiyoung awakes with a jolt as she scans the room. Dusik was awake at this time and by his work desk like always. He was hammering and working away at his weapon. It was impressive, almost like a real gun. She looked down at her gun and then put it behind her once more, hidden by her jacket and shirt.
"You should be careful with a weapon like that, kid." Jiyoung scoffs lightly as she stares up at him.
"I may not look like it, but I know what I'm doing with it." At this point that was one of the only things she was really sure of. She wasn't even sure of her own humanity and that was what scared her.
"Where did you learn how to use one of those?" Feeling the weight on her back from the gun was reassuring. It was real and it would not leave. Not like her dad did.
"My dad taught me a while back, he thought it'd be useful for me. Never thought he'd be right but now look at me."
Dusik watched the look in her eyes as she stares off into space. She missed her father possibly? Where was he? "I'm sure your father would be proud of you."
"I don't care," she bluntly says. She didn't say anything else and neither did he. He silently works on his weapon as she stayed in thought. How long were things going to be like this? What was the rest of the building like? Were there more monsters like the ones outside and the girl who didn't take her chips?
"It's dangerous, don't go daddy!", a voice yells out causing the two in the small space to glance at each other. The noise came from outside, sounding like a child. What the hell was happening out there? Jiyoung thought. "Can you please not go? Please?" The voice kept going making Jiyoung just want to cover her ears. Another dad was disappointing a child, that was no surprise to her. She had seen it enough from her own.
"Just stay with us!"
"Don't leave us daddy!"
"It's okay, it's okay." A man's voice this time. He sounded more kind. Jiyoung stands quietly much to Dusik's displeasure.
The man in the wheelchair shakes his head at her, in case of any danger that was outside. But Jiyoung was curious. She wasn't interested in anything else besides getting a peak of what was happening outside beside their little world inside the studio apartment.
She quietly goes over to the window, pulling back the curtains only a little to look down. She saw a glimpse of a man with a makeshift rope out the window. She didn't see the children who were obviously inside, begging their father to stay inside with them. Unlike her own father, this father seemed to be leaving to help not for his own selfish reasons.
"Stop crying, what if the monsters hear you? Sook, take good care of Yeong until I come back, okay? Don't worry you know Daddy used to be in the special forces. I can climb down and come back in no time."
Jiyoung had enough, pushing away the negative thoughts of her own father away and pushing the curtain back. She slumps onto the bed as she watches Dusik focus on his weapon still. "How long are you going to work on that? Isn't it good enough?"
"Well-"
"WA- WATCH OUT! LOOK BELOW!" Jiyoung jumps, turning towards the window as another voice interrupts Dusik. Someone else was watching?
Jiyoung jumps up as Dusik tries to move toward the window to see the chaos outside as well. Jiyoung opens the window to see the creepy monster she saw before with a big eye staring directly at the father. "Oh god," Jiyoung mumbles in fear.
The father yells and curses as he tries to hold on and back away from the monster's eye. "G-GO AWAY!"
"DADDY!"
The rope starts to tear as Jiyoung watches in terror. "No," she whispers as the man starts to plummet.
"What's happening kid?"
Thump.
Jiyoung shakily backs away from the window, the image not leaving her mind. Was it the first she saw? Probably not, but it didn't matter to her. He was innocent and now was dead. His poor children.
Dusik climbs onto the bed and looks out the window and sighs. Jiyoung hears the cries of his children, the ones who scream for him and scream in denial.
Soon their cries turned to yelling. "Go! GO AWAY! YOU MONSTER!" The children keep yelling and Jiyoung only knew the monster now turned to them now that their father was all the way on the ground. She stares at Dusik who glances to his weapon momentarily. Jiyoung also thinks back to her gun.
"Somebody help us!"
"PLEASE HELP US!" Jiyoung jumps up, apparently having the same thought as Dusik.
"Hand it to me," he tells her. Jiyoung grabs the light colored weapon and hands it over to him, observing how he handles the contraption carefully. As soon as he prepares himself, the two hear a smash. Jiyoung furrows her brows and heads over to the window, opening it fully as the two of them see what it was.
The boys head hung out the window as he started to yell at the monster. "Come on! You peeping perverted fucker!"
Dusik opens the window and holds up the weapon. After a few moments, aiming at the monster, he shoots. Whack.
"Did you get it?" Jiyoung asks in a whisper. Dusik turns to the girl and nods. He continues to stay outside the window as he soon sees Hyun lean out. He makes signals to the boy who only stares back in confusion. He huffs and rolls his eyes turning back to Jiyoung.
"Hand me that board." She turns and sees the white board with a marker and goes over handing it to him.
"Why do you need it?" Dusik just points out the window with another huff causing Jiyoung to raise her brow and move towards the window. Dusik holds the whiteboard out for Hyun as it reads, "are you hurt anywhere, you punk?"
Jiyoung leans out, going in front of Dusik who shakes his head in annoyance. Jiyoung ignores the thought of the father on the ground and looks in the direction that Dusik was looking in.
There was Hyun who breathlessly and cautiously made eye contact with her. Relief flooded through her. At least this kid seemed to be doing well. She waves slightly and goes back in before Hyun could wave awkwardly back at her.
Hyun continues to stare in their direction as Dusik starts to write again. "Good. But other monsters might be coming here after hearing that just now."
Jiyoung sits in silence as he turns the board towards her for a second and she realizes. Maybe she should have used her gun. But she only had a few bullets, she needed to hold it for when she personally needed it. It wasn't like the monsters weren't already alarmed by the continuous screaming. That was all Jiyoung could say to herself to make herself feel better.
Outside the windows, Hyun signals to say that Dusik could kill the monsters so they would be safe. Even with the minimal signals Hyun sent, Dusik started to write on the board again.
"I didn't kill it. They don't die with this poor equipment I made." Jiyoung steps closer as she sighs.
"I should have used my gun right?" She whispers. Dusik turns to her and shakes his head. Even he understood her doubt and her being apprehensive about trying to kill the monster. He turns back to the other teen Jiyoung's age and sees how he looks down below. The children in 1210 cry and lean out the window, staring at their father on the ground.
Dusik goes to writing again and turns the board to Hyun.
"Do you want to save those kids?"
