Chapter 2: A Week Later, No Replies, and a Monster
Jiyoung looked around the security office. Nobody was around, not even Mr. Kim which was weird as he was always there whenever she needed him. She gives up with a roll of her eyes as she leaves the idea of finding whatever package her mom sent and leaves.
She walks up the stairs, blasting music in her ears, no care in the world. It was a normal day. A week had passed and her mom still tried everyday to get her to come back home. She would tell her she's not safe by herself and should be with her family. Jiyoung would scoff, wondering and asking her mother how safe they were with someone like their father always coming back from prison and committing crimes.
The hours passed by, for some reason no one was answering when she texted her family. Numerous texts and calls and still nothing. Her first few texts were about not getting the package, but then it became worry. Jiyoung shakes her head, thinking nothing of it. Maybe they were busy, she shouldn't think into it.
As it got darker, Jiyoung continues watching T.V., finding nothing better to do than that. The nights got lonely at times but it was for the best.
Then, down the hall, a rough banging erupts. She groans as she goes outside to open her door. The amount of noise she heard on the 14th floor was ridiculous, she couldn't take it.
Jiyoung swings the door open and looks right. Nothing. As her eyes land to the left, her jaw drops open seeing the thing. She couldn't know what it was. She barely has time to breath as she closes her door with a slam and locks it.
Something was eating ramen noodles, but it wasn't human.
Jiyoung takes her phone out and shakily dials her mom's number. Yet again there was no answer. Someone knocks on the door and as she dials once again, she looks through the screen. A blonde girl stood in front, looking normal, but with a confused look on her face.
"Mom? Why aren't you or Suho answering? Some creepy shit is happening, so call me back," Jiyoung whispers into the phone. Sure she left her mom hanging sometimes, but it was strange for her mom not to answer back when she called. She was always there for her even if she didn't deserve it.
Jiyoung tiptoes to her closet, opening it slowly and taking out the small black case. She lays it on the floor and opens the locks carefully as to not make any noise.
The door knocks again, this time it sounded like banging. "I have a gun, 1411," Jiyoung says, attaching the silencer while she then approaches the door. "I'm not afraid to use it so back away!"
"Food?" That voice did not sound human.
The banging continues but Jiyoung backs up, hoping if she didn't speak that she would just leave. What was wrong with this girl? Was this chick seriously freaking out over not eating?
Jiyoung remembered the time she stood with her on the elevator weeks ago. The blonde stood quietly while Jiyoung's darker hair, one that was now dyed dirty blonde bounced around in a ponytail, her jog coming to an end. She held a bag in her hand, one full of chips. Jiyoung could still indulge herself even with a jog on nice days. "Chip?" She offers to the girl. The blonde only looks at her as if she was insane and went back to her phone.
Now, Jiyoung was behind a door, looking in the screen at the bleeding girl. "I offered you some chips, you didn't take any!" She couldn't open the door to the thing, girl, whatever the hell she was, Jiyoung didn't care.
She looks through the screen and soon after a moment of silence, Jiyoung sees the blonde look more normal, tears building up in her eyes, walking away. She shuts the camera to the screen off and hears the girl crying and talking with somebody.
Jiyoung backs away from the screen and sits on her bed, holding onto her gun tightly. She takes a deep breath and tries to control her breathing. It had to be a dream or some psychotic break, she thinks. Within those moments she hears the girl start to yell again and Jiyoung flinches, holding her gun, aiming at the door. She scolds herself. She couldn't be jumpy now. She had to be alert, like her dad taught her.
Dirnt, dirnt. DIRNT, DIRNT.
Jiyoung's eyes widen as she looks up at her ceiling. The sound of the guitar goes off again and she hears footsteps retreating towards the staircase and she sighs a breath of relief, hoping that was the weirdest thing that night. The guitar continues playing, but that noise didn't bother her as much anymore. Not as much as it did the kid two doors down.
"Fucking stop!" Jiyoung hears the kid yell. She scoffs and leans against the wall her bed sat against.
She lays down on her bed then, holding the gun in her right hand as she lays on her side, facing the door and the screen. Why did this place have to be so weird? Why couldn't her mom and brother reply?
As she sleeps, the overwhelming feeling creeped inside her.
Tell me. What is it that you want. More than anything.
When Jiyoung opens her eyes, she sees the light shine through the curtains. A new day. She looks down at the gun still in her grip and furrows her eyebrows. So it was real. She puts the gun to the side and grabs her phone to see if this time her family replied at all. Nothing.
She calls her mom's number, putting the phone to her ear. There wasn't even any ringing. Then a voice came through. "We're sorry but your call cannot be completed at this time. Please hang up and try your call again later." Jiyoung groans in annoyance and hangs up before the voice could continue. What was with the connection around this area? She grabs ahold of the gun again, hiding it behind her back in the waist belt. She covers the rest of the gun with her shirt and jacket and steadily walks to the door.
Maybe everything was fine now. She slept a good eight hours, she thought. She opens her door and peers out, her eyes instantly landing on where she saw the monster last night. Only thing that was left was the broken box, the ramen everywhere and some blood. The blood was what worried her.
It trailed across the hallway, the dark liquid pooling together. She shivers, looking all around to see no one. It was too quiet. Questions came to her mind, all of them surrounding her. No, she had to calm down. Her dad knew how to handle a situation like this.
Jiyoung slowly inches her way to the door next to hers, her knocks barely audible. "Yo, Macgyver. You alive?" Silence. She looks around more, shuddering at the thought of something watching her. "Dusik?" Her voice cracks and she curses to herself.
"Come in," she hears his gruff voice. Jiyoung opens the door slowly and sees the man in his wheelchair. "What the hell's going on out there?" Jiyoung lets out a breath and trembles before him. She felt weak but everything was different now.
"I don't know. There's a starving girl who's turning into-" she cuts herself off thinking of how ridiculous she sounds. "She looked like a monster. I know I sound crazy but you gotta believe me. I don't know what's happening-"
"I believe you," Dusik says without a second thought. Jiyoung moves closer into the room and sees something new on his working desk.
"Is that new?"
Dusik chuckles and brings up the weapon, holding it out to her. The white thing didn't look so threatening, but from the month Jiyoung had gotten to know the man, she knew it was anything but innocent. "Just in case."
"Just in case of what? Of that girl?"
Dusik stares at her for a second without speaking. The look in his eyes was as if he was trying to look for answers. "Have you not looked outside?"
"What the hell are you talking about?" Jiyoung turns her attention to the window and rushes over to it, pushing the curtain out of the way. Her hand trembles as she holds the curtain and gasps.
Jiyoung Shin, 19 years old. No clue where her family is and why they weren't answering her. All she did know was that she was a day into the end of the world on October 4th.
