Chapter 1: A Light Jog

Jiyoung Shin looked out her window. The sun shined through the curtains and onto her face, her dark eyes glancing around everywhere. The security guard seemed to be doing the usual around the grounds, at least it was a nice day.

She brings up her dyed hair into a high ponytail, slipping on her jogging clothes before she comes out of her apartment, 1407. It wasn't too much, but it was enough for her for now, until she could make more money and get away from the area.

Her phone buzzes but she swipes the decline once again. Another call from Mom. Jiyoung sighs as she plugs in her earbuds and turns on the loud music, blasting in her ears. It wasn't that she didn't want to speak to her mother or her siblings. She loved them, both her mother and her younger brother. Even her dad though a part of her wished she didn't. Though she loved him, she barely showed it anymore. He didn't deserve her love or her family's love for him. He didn't deserve to come home any time soon and wouldn't be there if he ever did.

The move was straining, consisting of her mother begging her to stay, pleading with tears in her eyes. Jiyoung inherited her father's restraint of emotion though, it affected her greatly but she wouldn't show it. It had been almost a month soon since she had moved.

Green home was a decent place to stay. No one bothered her except for a noisy girl on the 15th floor, but other than that everyone left her alone or was particularly easy to get along with.

She presses the elevator button, knowing she should take the stairs for the exercise and stood inside, waiting to go down. Her running clothes clung to her while she bounced around, scrolling through music on her phone. The elevator stops at the first floor and she leaves through the main entrance.

As Jiyoung approaches the outside, she hears the sound of the loud grass cutter hit into a rock, the shiny yet dangerous blade soaring through the air towards a kid around her age. Her eyes widen as she continues her jog towards them, she was going in that direction anyway. Might as well be nosy, she thought.

Her steps start to slow as she gets to the two. "You alright, kid?" Jiyoung asks the taller boy. He was only slightly taller than her with dark hair and baggy clothes, but still cute. Hyun stares at her in confusion as she didn't look any older than him and yet she was calling him a kid.

"Uh, yeah," he mumbles, but she was close enough to hear.

"What's your name?"

"Hyun." A boy who spoke few words. Quiet. Good enough for Jiyoung. She nods at him.

"You new here?" He nods at her this time and she smiles to the two of them politely, really looking like a faint smirk.

"Well, as long as everyone's alright. See you around Mr. Kim, nice meeting you Hyun." With that, she jogs off, leaving Hyun to look back at her. The security guard nods towards her fleeting figure and then turns to him.

"She moved here a month before you, doesn't cause trouble and keeps to herself." Hyun looks back to Mr. Kim, shaking his head of any thoughts of the pretty girl. He turns back to the conversation with the man though he just wanted to get inside.

Jiyoung on the other hand was trying to avoid a conversation in the first place. She kept jogging down the road, huffing as her phone would stop her music and then buzz, causing her to lose her focus.

10 missed calls now.

Do you want to be left alone? Is that it?

Jiyoung glares at nothing, looking around her but no one was close by. Who the hell said that? Jiyoung thinks while she brings her attention back to herself. She looks down at her phone once more to see it buzzing once again. Jiyoung presses the accept button and brings it up to her ear.

"Sweetie, I'm so glad you answered. Have you thought about coming home yet?" Jiyoung clenches her jaw, visibly shaking.

"If he's thinking about coming there when he's out, then no. We talked about this."

"Jiyoung Shin. Be respectful towards your father." Jiyoung wanted to slam the phone to the ground, smash it to pieces, but she had no choice but to stay on the line. She had to confront her mother.

"No, why should I respect him when he respects nobody but himself? If he really respected us, he would stop landing himself in jail!" She hears the soft sniffles over the line and she sighs to herself. It wasn't her mom's fault, she knew that. Yet she couldn't help but just yell. Why time after time would he be allowed to make mistakes and not make up for them?

"Can you at least tell us where you're staying? Maybe we could visit you-"

"Green Home. Apartment 1407. Look Mom, I gotta go. Tell Suho I said I miss him." Jiyoung hangs up the phone without hearing a response and shakes her head. She couldn't take it anymore. Not until her mother stopped letting him back into their lives. Her mother had to learn. They all did.

She brings up the volume on her music again and continues her jog along the way, but her lips start to feel a dark liquid. She stops suddenly, holding up her hand to her nose and groans. "God, must be stress," Jiyoung mutters before jogging back to Green Home.

As she comes up to the building, she sees Mr. Kim once again. This time with tissue in his nose. "Seems like it's happening to everybody," she chuckles as she comes to a stop next to him.

"Yeah, must be the stress from the job."

"What's my excuse?" She laughs and continues walking then, knowing Mr. Kim was close behind. He held an orange juice in his hand as they both walked up the stairs. "You visiting somebody, Mr. Kim?"

"Oh, just going to talk to Hyun Cha. He lives a few doors down to you." She nods and then keeps going, minding her own business after that.

As they approach the floor, they go their separate ways, Jiyoung going left while Mr. Kim goes in the other direction. Jiyoung goes over to her door, looking down while she fiddles with her keys. The door to 1410 barely opened, Hyun only peaking out to see Mr. Kim. It didn't take long for Jiyoung to just go into her apartment, leaving the two to their own devices.

In the bathroom, Jiyoung wipes her face, cleaning the drying blood off of her. It seemed to have stopped now, she thought as she stared in the mirror.

This was for the best. She had to be alone right now, despite what her mom thought. Her brother, Suho, agreed with Jiyoung, but stayed with their mother. It was what was best for them too. They needed to realize that they couldn't be a family when someone like her father was around.

Jiyoung leaves the bathroom, changing into something more comfortable while she sits on her bed watching T.V. As she hears the declaration of love from the male character, she snorts at the cheesiness. "God, what a load of-"

The sounds of mechanics working make the girl roll her eyes and knock on her wall to her left. "Keep it down, Macgyver," she says through the wall. She hears a short chuckle and that was it. Quiet. Until another sound broke through from the 15th floor. Jiyoung groans. She knew how bad the walls and ceilings sucked at keeping noise away.
