Jiang Cheng having to grow up with the Jiang family only heir ge had to go through studies though he is really intelligent and strong.
He has to the face in comparison people make with Wei Wuxian who masters high levels.
Especially in his family his mother and father who get on a lot of fights. The only person his father sees is Wei Wuxian.
The only person who admires him and sees him as himself then Wei Wuxian. Jiang Yanli, Jiang Cheng older sister who always knew best always treat people as equal no matter the status.

Another person is Wei Wuxian, they both were brothers although they are troublemakers they still bond over many things. Especially Jiang Yanli Pork and Rib soup.

Another person that had supported Jiang Cheng was his instructor Master Lou Mingling did not just supported him and taught  him cultivation.  He raised and took him under her wing. She always never let him see the bad reality of his parents and let him stay at her quarters for meditation and teachings.

Jiang Wanyin was also set up for marriage to one of the most handsome and powerful people of cultivation.

Jiang Cheng had a huge crush on him in which once he found out, while he was studying in the cloud of recess. He then overheard Lan Xichen talking with his brother Lan Wanji, and told that he was only doing it just because he was being forced to the marriage.

He told his master about what he had heard. They took 2 weeks off of studying and adventured around Gusu. At first Jiang Wanyin was sad in insisted his master that he was ok. However, the woman took him either way. Which at the end it came better to get over it that he doesn't have to be best person to the person who doesn't notice his talents.

After the 2 week break, Jiang Cheng started to not show up to none of the dates he was forced to attend. With Master Lou making an excuse for not attending wether they were she was helping him with studies, or taking after school private sect leader classes.

In their was was Jiang Cheng the most proud and cheerful, yet insecure person. Who may not have the best life, but has the best Master, sister, and brother in his life.

However, the Wens Sect of Qishan have plans of invading they were willing to get out of the cave and trap they set up in with big serpent attacking.
Lan Wanji and Wei Wuxian were left behind saving Jiang Wanyin and the other heirs and sects diciples. It took days walking to the sect in returned to help them get out.

Seeing Wei Wuxian in deep sleep, and Lan Wanji injured from fighting from the serpent and his leg broken.

Then what came next was the Massacre of Lotus Pier many people died the only people that were alive was the family. The Wens were coming not only after the land, but to get Wei Wuxian.

Lou Mingling sacrificed herself saving Jiang Cheng and mom, Jiang Yanli, and including Wei Wuxian in them to boat wrapping around them with A rope near the dock.

Yu Ziyuan fainted from the battle, Wei Wuxian is in shock, Jiang Yanli is trying to calm Wei Wuxian. Jiang Cheng was ready to set the boat to go, however he spot his master going towards the decks

" Master ! Where are you going ?" He said looking nervous and terrified coming closer towards his master.

" I am going to protect the Lotus Pier " Lou Mingling said pulling out her sword from her waist.

" Wait Master ! Let me go with you! " he said trying to get towards the desk, but then suddenly been pushed back to the boat.
Her expression was emotionless looking towards her student.

" I am sorry Jiang Cheng, but I can't risk you getting caught, " she said sighing
" You going with them "

" But Master !!"

" It's an order! "  she yelled

" But Master! " Jiang Cheng said with tears running down his eyes nonstop.

" A-Yin You work hard you impress me in how boy is willing to stand up.
please don't cry for me you are always my prideful boy, now"

"M-master!" Jiang Cheng cried

" Remember when I told you that you free to spirit I seen how much life outed you .......Jiang Wanyin my final order is for you is to life your at its best being able to go through good and the bad .....go outside of being a heir, sect leader, and husband,  explore what is the outside to see the cultivation world  and show everyone who Jiang Wanyin is !"

Lou Mingling hugged Jiang Wanyin with tears falling in her robes. sadness was filling the world up. Than she broke up the hug hearing that their were Wen guards coming to the deck. Lou Mingling pushed Jiang Wanyin to the boat. She got the rope that tied the shore to the deck, and made one glance at her student

" Master ?!"

" I am sorry " she whispered
Lou Mingling cut the rope, and pushed the Boat to the river.

"MASTER!"

The Wens guards started to come and Lou Mingling sighed was ready to make her final fight.
