CHAPTER 10
The kiss. Friday night.
-Lara! That skirt is amazing!
Lara was wearing a denim skirt, and it wasn't too short to say "uh, that bitch", but neither it was "amen, nun". She just looks gorgeous.
-Your turn to take a shower now girl.
I grab my towel and got into the bath. I was helping Lara to straight her hair and pick up some good clothes, while my mom made me a phone call, telling me she was already in Canada, after 2 hours of long trip. Since my voice was all cracked up because of Julian, my mother asked me what happened.
The only thing she told me was: "Well, you know. If you come back with him, I'll make your dad kick you out of his house", which was funny because following that came: "I've gotta go my dear, bye!"
Julian hasn't write a thing after that. But seeing how well he was after dumping me, made me think about his text. What if it was just a joke? Or a bet between him and David? Like, after two months, only out of the sudden he would miss me? And on his birthday? Just sounded ridiculous.
Leaving my towel on the door, I closed the bathroom and check on my phone. Julian's text was there, he hasn't write any more things. And then, Joshua's name pop up on my lock screen.
"Hey Annie! I've been at school, you know, Mrs. Sánchez took away my phone. How are you?"
I was about to answer him, and then he asked me:
"Oh, and BTW, are you going to the little business of today? Just so we can, you know... Chat"
I was surprised, so instead of answering him, I just took a shower. And washed my hair. And put on some cream on my legs.
Basic stuff.
I got out of the bathroom, and Lara was there, at her room, showing me some clothes.
-Okay dear, what do you prefer, this, or this?
In one hand she has a red blouse with some flowers on the sleeves and in the other, it was a yellow t-shirt with the logo of Hard Rock Cafe.
-But Lara, you are already dressed up!
-Not for me, for you!
-But I've got clothes!
-Oh, really? You are going with that t-shirt?
It was an Iron Man's one. And it was cool.
-Why not?
-You are going to see Joshua girl! For the first time, out of school! You gotta look fabulous!
I rolled up my eyes.
-A black shirt and a denim would do fine. You know I don't like too many colors.
-All right then, let's take a look.
She pulled out a black t-shirt with big white letters, and then some denim pants that were blue with little white details.
-That one is great- I said.
-Darling, you gotta let your geek side out when you get to have something serious with Joshua. But before that please, be more femenine.
-I make no promises.
-You know, my eyes are red, and tired. I kind of don't want to go...
-You don't want to because you are going to see Joshua, and then you are thinking "hey, what does Julian think about that? What he would say? Why did he write me?" Am I wrong?
I denied.
-You gotta be strong, get out of this. Joshua is asking you to go! I'm not saying he will be your next boyfriend or that in a month you guys are going to fall for each other. But hey, it's good to hang out. He hasn't speak to his ex for a while. So do you.
-I want to see Josh. I just don't want to get confused.
-You are not going to. Red lipstick or gloss?
-Aren't we going to a party? -I asked.
-Well, yes...
-Then, you know what's good for me.
Lara just smiled.
It has been two months. I started to talk to another guy who makes no difference at all from all the boys I talked to, because he is just a friend right now. The thing here is that I like him. I really do.
But then, I can't ignore the fact that Julian still affects me. If it wasn't like that, I wouldn't cry out when I saw his number on my cellphone, and right now is killing me that I didn't answer. Then, Joshua just broke up with this girl a month ago or so, and I'm sure he just likes me the way I do, in a shy, really friendly way. But it is okay? I mean, I just don't want to be dependent of a guy, again. I just broke up a long 9-months-term relationship. I have the right of dating but I don't think is correct. Like right now.
I wasn't happy at all when I saw Julian and Mikaela together, it felt like a hard kick on my stomach. What if that girl just feel the same thing while seeing his boyfriend for more than 2 years with someone else? And what if that someone was me? I just couldn't do that.
Maybe I'm being so sensitive. I just have to be like those girls who doesn't give a fuck about things like this. I looked at myself, and I was looking good.
-Anne! Joshua is not going!
-WHAT?
I grabbed my phone.
"Hi Annie. I don't think I'm going today, sorry. Alex is not feeling well"
-Who cares about Alex?! Damn! I was just looking so good!
-Anne is fine! You are still looking good!
-IF HE ISN'T GOING THEM I'M NOT GOING!
-IT'S A CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION! ANNE!
I looked at Lara.
-Let's go, forget about Julian, be calm. Maybe Joshua will appear there...
-For what reason?
-GIRLS! HURRY UP!- screamed auntie at the door.
-You, perhaps. Now, come on, let's go!
We went downstairs and got in the car.
-What's with the long face honey? - asked my aunt.
-Her love is not going mom.
-Alex feels bad, I talked to his mother.
-But Alex is not my love! Ew!
-But his brother is! And Josh doesn't have a thing to do with us!- Lara said.
We laughed a lot. My aunt just watched us, and told us that we were crazy.
-I think this evening is going to be a lot of fun- Lara said with a smile.
I know I've been intense with the Julian thing but come on! Joshua's not going? That sucks.
When we got there, I saw Christopher, Joshua's best friend.
-Have a nice time girls! I'll pick you up for Oscar's party.
-Mom, I forgot to tell you, but Veronica's mom is going to take us- Lara said.
-What? But she didn't call me. If she doesn't call me I'm going to pick you up, okay?
-OK mom! Bye!
I waved my hand.
-Now what?- I asked, already bored.
-Let's go there. I want to talk to someone.
And Lara was smiling at Chris.
-So that's why he is here huh? - I laughed.
-Lara! You came!
Flavia hugged her. —And so did you Anne! What a nice surprise!
-Thank you Flavia, hi!
And then it hit me: she was in love with Alex! What a shame. I laughed, internally, of course.
They were preparing the hamburger, but the meat itself was being cooked at Maya's house. Maya couldn't care less about the prom and stuff, but her mother offered the house. The kitchen, technically. I felt kinda lost there, because at my old school I had a lot of friends, but here they are just classmates. And I know that my JIC team is not going to go to that party. And neither is Joshua, and I wanted Lara to have fun. But my aunt wouldn't want me to be alone at Lara's room, and I didn't want to call my father. So I guess I just gotta stay here.
I tried to be social, until Maureen told me to go to Maya's house, since there were my dudes.
Maureen really knows me. I just love her.
I went through it by walking two blocks, or more. I don't know. But while thinking about stupid, non sense things, I saw her.
I saw Joshua's ex. With Joshua. Fighting.
And, oh my God. She is THAT toxic.
I just hide behind a tree, and saw her moving her arms, she seemed really furious. Joshua just looked at her, he seemed to not care at all. She was screaming but I could barely understand a thing. Everyone who was passing by just looked away. I just went off to Maya's house. I guess today is not a good day for our exes.
-Anne! You came! Finally, I am so done with those idiots over there- said Maya, pointing at Jonathan and George, playing with the ketchup.
-Roxanne is not here? - I asked.
-No, she told me she wouldn't come. She didn't tell me why tho.
-Me neither- I respond while being pulled inside by Maya.
-Are you going to Oscar's party? - I asked.
-Do you think I'm going? What am I exactly going to do there? Besides, I haven't read my new book yet- said Maya, putting some mustard at her sandwich.
-I wish I couldn't go, but my aunt will insist.
-When is your mom arriving?
-Tomorrow, at 2 p.m. I already miss her.
-Doesn't seem like it. You are going to party the day she went off the country- and we both laughed.
We were chatting for a while, and then I told her everything I saw, the fight with Joshua and his ex.
-I told you, it's all fake. It's obvious, she is crazy and so is he.
-What? Do you know something?
-Well, what I know is...
My phone rang.
-Lara, what's up?
-Get in here right now! Joshua and Alex are here!
-Maya, gotta go! See you!
I ran off to the park again.
I arrived as fast as I could. And yes, they were here.
Joshua looked at me and smiled.
-Hi Annie.
And he kissed me.
